Well, don't some PC games also use XBox live? But yes the reputation consoles have for this sort of thing doesn't exactly encourage one to buy one. Of course, it happens in PC games too. Back when I aplyed WoW word got out that I was female and I would get lots of mail and messages from all kinds of creeps and all sorts of nastiness i I beat someone in a duel or whatever.

Why ban people who are paying for your product? Most companies/developers don't take these complaints seriously, which feeds the perception that misogyny is rampant within the industry as well. The people who made Halo 4 did come out and take a zero tolerance approach to misogyny though which is a good step. Sadly it led to a storm of internet nerd rage and accusations of 'reverse sexism'. Because stopping boys calling women whores is totally sexist.

This is more a general issue I think. I cycle most places, mainly because I like amazing in lycra, and I've been stationary and a car has driven into me, driver gets out and threatens to kill me for "being in his way" and there are countless examples of it. Some people I know have resorted to filming their rides for protection. Then when you take it to the police, they are unconcerned about it. Indeed the only case that I have heard about going to trial is where the victim, was himself a QC and already had a dialogue with the Police & CPS about their commitment to persueing such cases.

Except no one is doing that. The issue is not limited to consoles, the issue with consoles are due to the way XBL and whatnot operate in terms of allowing messaging and such like. Which aren't bad things, it just means if you hear a girls voice in a game you can harass them much more than you could in an MMO.

I must've gotten lucky in my WoW days then. We had an eclectic group of friends cross-guilds and even sides--never any of that BS, and amusingly enough two of them, the nastiest rogues on either side of the fence, fell in love irl and as far as I know, are still blissfully, geekily happy and ganking all and sundry. A guy telling another guy that he's going to beat the eff out of him, etc--is stupid manly b-s dynamics. In a face-to-face venue--usually just posturing and stupid bravado. If a fight does break out, it's usually not too serious. (The serious violence tends to occur without warning.)

A guy telling a girl he's going to commit violence (death, battery, rape, etc) is a threat.

As effed up as it is, a guy cannot (and generally will not) engage in "banter" of that type between genders. It's not even remotely acceptable, ergo--it's almost always a valid threat. Whether or not the woman is more than capable of planting the arsehole 6 feet under.

And yeah, I know that plays into gender role stereotyping, but that doesn't make it any less true.

When it's not face to face (IE over XBL, WOWchat, whatever) it's generally just abusive and stupid, because there's no way they actually know who the person they're verbally abusing is, and where they live, etc.

Now, when you receive anonymous death threats on your home phone--that's another level of threat risk entirely. That's when you call the cops, have a trap put on your phone, and hope they catch whoever did it.

Of course, when I was working for a Uni and received anonymous death threats, and they actually caught the effhead, neither the cops nor the Uni did anything-because he was a starting varsity football player.

But that didn't mean I didn't take action personally...

Haven't read through the entire thread, but the thing I find odd about the fake geek girl concept is: If a girl is even slightly attractive, surely she could find a non-geek guy to try to impress?

The arrogance of the idea that hot girls are making complicated cosplay costumes and trawling conventions to try to impress nerdy guys (who, let's be honest, are not high on the attractiveness totem pole in mainstream society) when, if it was about guys, they could, I dunno, go to the pub, do anything that is a lot easier and would expose them to non-weird-geek-types, is incredible.

That sentence could probably do with an editor ...

And there's never been (AFAIK) any attempt to explain that in the discussion of the fake geek girl idea, has there?

They don't want to seduce or even impress us, they want to humiliate us and lord their attractiveness over us and taunt us with what we can never whilst simultaneously mocking our hobby with their inaccurate costumes and faux geek chic.

I think a lot of geeks are more wounded than that. Or rather, it certainly is arrogance, but I think it's arrogance as a side effect of a wounded smallness. I don't have any data for this, but my personal suspicion is that the kind of geek who sees Fake Geek Girls everywhere expects to be attacked everywhere except for his geekdom, which he views as the one safe place in the universe. When any foreigner enters that space, he expects to be attacked. And how would an attractive female foreigner attack him? Not by verbally belittling him, obviously, since she plainly isn't verbally belittling him. But she must be attacking him somehow; she's a foreigner! So how is she doing it? What attack is coming that he doesn't see? Well, what is she doing? Being geeky! Aha! That's the attack - she's attacking him by being geeky! That f*cking teasing wh*re!

Not the ... most logical chain of reasoning in the world. And certainly arrogant. But also pathetic and small-minded. Extrapolating from my own experiences as a geek who used to expect to be attacked everywhere except for my geekdom, that's my personal guess.

My GF has a lot of "Nerd" girls who are your typically Anime/Video Game/Scifi/Fantasy loving cuties, real attractive ladies to boot. They usauly date a nerdy guy who has the same interests and then they cheat on them constantly with people they view as being more in touch with popular culture.

I cant say I'm not without fault as I totally lured my current GF (an anime/comic lover) out of her current relationship with a man who she had dated and lived with for many years, but wouldn't stop playing games/watching movies/reading comics/mangas (I want to point out Skyrim as a big culpirt).

This winter shes coming with me to Japan while I play music for a bunch of insane japanese punks and get really mashed up all over Japan's nightclub scene.

And we can both nerd out on anime/gundams during the day...
