View Full Version : Clothes make the man...

But DO they.....?

I'm wearing a suit at the moment and have been told I look pretty sharp but to be honest I'm not so sure. I don't exactly look like James Bond or anything and to my eyes I look just as good dressed for a night with my mates.
Besides I hate wearing suits.

So I put it to you good people of BoLS... does a sharp dressed man really make any difference to you? Are you, yourself, a man who prefers to look like you've just walked out of a cologne advert? And does it affect how you see yourself/how others see you?

i have to wear suits day in day out for work and i now resent having to wear them at any other time. Give me my jeans and a geeky t-shirt at any time.

Skinny jeans, particularly with elasticated bottoms, and deck shoes or espadrilles - are the most heinous dress crimes a man can make at the moment. Should only ever be considered by boy bands, and androgynous persons. All other men should realise how unmanly a look this is - particularly if coupled with a stupid quiffy haircut or comedy shaved sideburns.

Clothes let you know a lot about the indvidual. looking smart doth not automatically a square conformist make - neither does looking like a cross between a bizarre magazine centrefold and a David beckham Lookalike, make you an out there, edgy reble taking it to the man - you just look like a metrosexual mouth breather.

A suit does make the man, and you can tell alot about a person by the cut of their cloth.
The company I work for is a joint venture between two different companies, you can tell which company the board memebers work for based on their suits, one company they wear (nasty) polyester suits the others don't.

But if you are going to wear one, make sure that it is tailored to you. One of the things I love doing is suit shopping :) though now my tailed jacket is now too big on me so I'll need to get that altered.

Psychosplodge

I do enjoy an excuse to wear the suit and proper shirt (with cufflinks not buttons), but then again I don't have to wear one for work.

Other than that, Comfort is the most important factor. Hoody, t-shirt, and comfortable trousers...

Wolfshade
11-15-2012, 03:22 AM
Oh yes certainly, like for instance the suit I wear to work is not a suit I would wear out. It also galls me that I am made to wear a suit (or at least shirt & tie) when my female co-workers are not made to dress equally smart. I think it is disgraceful that management considers them to be not as professional as their male counter parts and so doesn't expect them to dress as smart.

Yes, clothes make the man.

Also, not all suits are made equally. While the ultimate expression is still Savile Row bespoke you are infinitely better off going to one of the reputable Indian tailors that visit the major cities (both in the UK and US) and having a bespoke suit made for you than buying off the rack. You can have such a suit made for a few hundred pounds, often cheaper than off the rack suits. You can have details altered to suit your build and height, shorter bodies for shorter men, wider lapels for broader chests, peak lapels instead of the ubiquitous notched etc.

The average off the rack or made to measure business suit is an insipid, dull looking thing and I can't really blame a chap for taking against them after being forced to wear them. But judging suits by their standards is like judging a nations cuisine by McDonalds.

TDA I hope you mean a manly rock band, but then you would not be wearing elastic-bottomed jeads and espadrilles. If you mean ballad warbling, quiff adorned buffoonic doyens of pre-pubescent bints, aka boy bands, then yes, it counts and you may wear such apparel with pride (in the name of love).

Of course what is depicted here is not a Tuxedo but a Dinner Jacket...

Yes, it is lacking in satin lapels, but the point remains true.

And regardless that quote is far too good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_P7yWnAAd0) to go past for any discussion on clothes (though the "we" line is used later when Jack is talking to his past and [one of his] future selves). I've used it myself on people when they question my being "overdressed"* - that or "out of my way, *****, I'm fabulous".

And it's not just good clothes - they have to be good fitting clothes styled to one's physique. For instance with a suit venting on the jacket can be quite important as if chosen poorly can lead to emphaisis of a gentleman's behind. Doublebreasted suits should be avoided unless you're a ganster or David Letterman. Belt, wallet, shoes & watchstrap should all match. You look slimmer in a size 12 if you're a size 12 than squeezing into a 10 etc.
Buying a suit off the rack can work, but wearing a suit should be no less comfortable than any other article of clothing - it is, after all, just a shirt, jacket and pants with a tie.

Whilst jeans and a t-shirt have their place, it doesn't hurt for people to try and look elegant every now and then. I wish it were winter here, so many more ways to look fancy.

* and it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed, at least that way everyone will be thinking you've got somewhere better to go after your current engagement ;)

Denzark
11-15-2012, 03:40 PM
No the lapels look satin, a Tuxedo (at least to one born in the centre of the universe for good tailoring) normally refers to the white version. I will fully acknowledgemy pednatic snobbery across international colloquial boundaries, which is authorised in matters of gentleman's satorial elegance.

I get tons of freebie t-shirts and sweat shirts from different supplement companies, I get free tops and they get free advertisement :).
Bottoms are Nike joggers or 501s and converse boots, these are awesome boots for the gym as they have completely flat soles so help lifting nicely. I do have some Iron Maiden Vans for slobbing around in too, Casual smart is Ralph Lauren or Lacoste polos, jeans and timberland boots.

I do own a couple suits and I like Thomas Pink for my tailoring as they do bespoke shirts. I don't love wearing suits, my brother says I look like a big American fridge in one. Dress shoes are always by Churches brogues, expensive but worth it. Hackett is another favorite label of mine.

I also like Burberry for my winter coats and scarfs, but none of the check gear that's so linked with Chavs.

Eau da toilette is either, Safari by Ralph Lauren, Eqoiste by Chanel or farenheight by Dior.

Don't wear much jewellery, I wear a belcher necklace which was my grandfathers, wedding ring and an Omega sea master the wife bought me 10 years ago.
So yeah, I think I scrub up ok :)

I think so, but then your preference for period-esque anachronistic clothing is pretty much a dead givaway. ;)

I think it's mostly a cultural phenomenon. I saw a lot fewer people wearing jeans on your side of the pond. It's much more common over here--and honestly, more comfortable to many. (Different types of denim).

The biggest complaint women have (and rightly so) is that every designer seems to have their own "take" on what a given size should be, and how it should fit a woman's body. There is no more frustrating thing for a woman to shop for, than trying to buy the "right" pair of jeans.

Holy.

Hells.

Ladies--if your man is with you...at a mall, no less...helping you buy jeans? Do not give him crap if some eye-candy draws his attention for a moment.

He's in the mall.

With you.

While you're trying to buy jeans.

That's grounds for canonization in some parts.

Having narrow hips and shorter legs while having muscles built up from years of football and martial arts - I find that I have to buy tailored trousers for my suit in order to look smart. That's not the sort of thing you want to admit in public.

I openly admit it.
Just because you have a narrow view when it comes to music, doesn't mean that I have to. :p

Oh there's a narrow view but even a wide view doesn't generally encompass lamefo...

You want to know why I like LMFAO?

Because I am quite frankly very tired of the same stuff being churned out by the metal industry "feel sorry for me because bad stuff". No, I want to listen to some feel good music, LMFAO has songs about being awesome and having a good time. I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Sure, it's cheesy, but it's catchy and in that respect it's really quite good.

That's not metal :D lol
that whiney emo ****e like bvb and botdf and the scremo like bmth....
the problem is things like NME, Kerrang, and metal hammer spam the same "new" **** every month, but overlook the new stuff by bands that don't follow where they're trying to push the genre. When trivial appeared on the scene there wasn't a month that went by without Metal hammer bigging them up, and they're a very mediocre act compared to most others I've seen.

There's plenty of non-metal out there that's got far more merit than the likes of lmfao...

But why are you persecuting my RIGHT to choose what I want to do with myself?

So what if I listen to, and like, LMFAO? I have free will, it's not like I'm forcing you to listen to it.

You really do wind me up at times...

I'm old school, metal is Iron Maiden, ACDC, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. :)

Oh and I nearly forgot Motörhead, loudest band I have ever seen, combined with an epic drum solo / strobe light show I walked out of that concert unsure if I would ever hear and see properly ever again.

Which is cool! I also like those bands, they have songs that I like, and that I dislike. I'm not going to slag them off purely on that basis though.

I'm terribly sorry old chap,it was meant in goodsport what what.

@DL there was nothing funnier than about 70k people turning up to watch saxon on an early slot, then all vanishing again afterwards, and the lead singer having a go at kerrang for saying no one would go see them on the mainstage of a festival...

Anthrax and Motorhead played together earlier this month, 'thrax were louder...

Did their amps go to eleven?

Think I've seen motorhead four times, and they've certainly been loud...

The drummer from 'head wasn't happy with the setup and kept shouting at people...

I think they must have only gone to 10, unless 'thrax got ones going to 12 but that is just crazy talk...

Yeah they had issues the other year at Bloodstock, and didn't finish their set
