Where can I find the rules for the Sabre Defense Platform by Forgeworld? A buddy tells me these are legal for regular 40K play AND that the rules are available via PDF download. I've looked at GW, BL and FW and haven't found this PDF. What's the deal? Please advise... thanks... Cope

PS Where does GW say that Forgeworld stuff is OK'd for 40K play? I haven't seen this anywhere? How well balanced is FW stuff? I'd be completely willing to play against FW with a mate... but I'd have to think twice about it with a stranger. I'd always heard it was unbalanced. Has that been fixed?

I wasn't aware that Forge World had released the rules as a PDF.

I don't know about PDF, but they are in the Imperial Armour: Aeronautica. The only version on PDF I know of are the kind where people take a scan of it and share it across the internet (rather illegally).

Games Workshop (through Forgeworld, who is owned by GW by the way) has it printed in the above referenced book on the Intro Page that there are units designed and intended to be used in "standard" games of 40K, but it's usually a good idea to ask first as some people are annal about such things.

If they are "experimental" (read: not printed in a book, but we have the model and we want to sell it) or not going to be in a book that's update the units soon, there will be a PDF on them. Once in book form, the PDFs are officially dropped. Any other versions are... "shady".

The older IA books (1-4) had PDF updates to bring them in line with 5th ed up for some time. Those are now gone as they are going to re-release the books for 6th ed.

Heh. You could have just asked me. The Sabre Defense System appears in Aeronautica Imperialis and is stamped ok for 40K (i.e. it is NOT experimental). There is the link to the PDF update released by Forge World which brings all vehicles in line with 6th Edition. The Sabre system's only change is officially being designated Artillery. I would have been using them long ago except they are for the Imperial Guard. The introduction of allies has been the "opening of the way" as Lovecraft would say. You can expect me to field between 3-5 of them every time. Obviously I can't print the stat line here but I'll have the book with me when we play. It suffices to say that it is a Twin-Linked platform which can utilize a variety of different heavy weapons. I prefer the Lascannon. It can fire at air or ground targets with equal aptitude. If you reach it in close combat it is as good as dead. It isn't moving once it is placed but it can be placed all over the board.

*P.S. ...please bring your Stormraven.

Isn't anything approved for standard 40k games stamped with the Chapter Approved logo? Unless you are playing in regular gaming circle where you have house ruled these things, I'd always check with your opponent before fielding Forgeworld stuff, even if it is '40K approved'.

Bingo. If it appears in the books with the appropriate logo stamp, you may use it. The caveat is if your local group or tournament has ruled them "off limits." Given that most Forge World units are weaker or on par with other units, this is a strange course to adopt. The gaming group that Mr. Copeland and I play in does not outlaw them and hence why I now utilize them. Forge World has some nice models, but most of them are highly specialized tools (like the Sabre Defense System). In my case, being a CSM player, the Sabre works very well as part of my allied contingent. My particular faction suffers rather badly for the lack of reliable AA. Other factions might not find it as important (having other options) or cost-prohibitive.

You were allowed to use them anyway, if you agreed with your opponent. Do people not talk to their opponents anymore?

Of course they do. Why else would Mr. Copeland be here asking about them? Talking to your opponent and agreeing on anything (including stuff in regular books) is the norm for pick up games. It is common enough for people to refuse (or request changes) when someone brings standard codex troops that they don't like. Local tournaments and leagues, however, have the standards set by the organizer.

I also need to take a moment to correct myself and prevent further spread of incorrect information. It is actually called the Sabre Gun Platform. I tend to call it the Sabre Defensive System because I always buy the Aegis and plop my IG allies behind it. They became a hybrid in my mind. I apologize for the confusion. That should make it easier for you to look it up or google. :)

Heh. You could have just asked me.

I did. I sent you a message on Facebook... after waiting a long time with no reply I realized, "I can ask the game community! They'll know!"

And I WILL bring my Stormraven... I ain't skeered! Cope
