View Full Version : To Fist or not To Fist!
Just after some open ideas here,
A While ago i picked up the GW Space Marine Megaforce set, Now i dont intend to use it as an army for myself and intentions are to paint up and sell on, Just can not decide if i should be doing it as Imperial Fist's or Ultra(smurfs)Marines,
Doing it as Dark angels is out as no skirts! :P
Whats youre thoughts on this, pro's and cons for both :)

I have to say from the title I thought that this would be another Pfist vs Pweapons debate.
I think the question is which ones do you like the look of best, or which ones have the back story which you like the best.
It used to be an easy go for Ultramarines as yellow is impossible to paint, but that is no longer the case.

Well You could do a detachment of DA reserve companies and probably get away with the lack of skirt. And Yellow can be a pain in the arse to paint.
I think when it comes to fisting it's down to the girl and what she prefers.
lol, yeah i can see why you thought that :)
If it was for myself then it would be fists, but a clean crisp Ultra's force can look really good, it's more a case of if you were going to buy a "pre-painted" force what is the most sell-able.....
True Yellow was a real bane for most painters in the past so fists were a seldom seen army, but that has changed, Ultra's are the poster boys for SM's and the Megaforce is a reasonable starting set,
Everytime i think im set on which faction im going to do i change my mind, so just trying to get others opinions :)

lol, after re-reading my title i think i should have thought about it a little more!!

In terms of painted minatures I think that there are probably more Ultramarine players, though I have to say I tend to try and buy unpainted, or strip them straight off.
I like the thought of Ultramarines on snow bases with some Tyranid bits

Yeah, unless it's something rare I don't buy painted and assume most are probably the same.

Ultramarines! But I would say that, wouldn't I.

I think in the "current" world, the Imperial Fists and Ultramarines are indistinguisahble other than their colour scheme. I would suggest that Ultramarines were the slightly better fluff wise with the ultramarine omnibuses and continoius history from 1st founding. Whereas, the Imperial Fists ceeded all of their history and traditions after the heresy and fully adopted the Index Astartes, so if I wanted to go down the fists route I would go for Black Templars as they are something different but are successors of the Fists. The big draw back is that they have quite an old codex, that doesn't mean that you can't win it is just that you might have issues with the more modern codecii

I think the Ultra's are a bit more sellable and I think a tad easier to paint.

Personally I'd buy Imperial Fists over Ultramarines anyday. The reasons are pretty simple, 1) it's a bit easier to paint, as people have pointed out, and 2) It's less common, same reason I'd never run Emperor's Children, Deathguard, Black Legion, or Thousand sons proper, they're the go-to schemes for a lot of people (obviously there's others, these are like the defaults though)

Make a custom Chapter, ala Goatboy's Goat Marines, and you can play whatever Marine codex you feel like playing that day. Except maybe Grey Knights. That would be a pretty impressive counts-as to get that acceptably WYSIWYG.

I'd go Imperial fists simply for the sake of saying "you've just been fisted" when you win a game.
and because they have that awesome space-fortress, the Phalanx

I wouldn't dismiss Dark Angels so easy. Their Codex is on the way and when he arrives the Dark Angels will be very, very popular (which is a good thing if you want to sell your miniatures)
The DA colour scheme is a nice one to do, it's just the lack of DA kit (like the Skirts!) that makes me uncertain of going that route, True about once codex DA is released they will become auto popular. Painting Fists would be "enjoyable" as i am a technique style painter, and already have had a go at the style i would like to represent them as ( Fist Speeder (http://www.fxmstudios.com/2011_10_01_archive.html) ) Never Painted Ultras, but again have an idea of what i want to do, choices choices! :)

It's almost like most people that posted responses didn't actually read the original post.
You should go with Imperial Fists. It is no longer as difficult to paint a good yellow, so that isn't a factor. The real factor is sellability.
As an experienced eBayer I can tell you that the Ultramarines paint scheme is too common to sell well. I have found that people will pay quite a bit of money for well-painted models with rarely seen color schemes.
Also, if you are up to the idea of doing something other than Ultras or Fists you might consider Salamanders, Crimson Fists (you know, the other fists), or Blood Ravens. I have seen all three of these sell very well.
