Assaulting popped transport passengers

Played a game recently where my termies rended a rhino and destroyed it.
I then attempted to assault the disembarked passengers, but my opponent claimed I could not, since I had already shot the transport.

Pg. 67, Destroyed: Note: '...the unit that shot it may assault the now disembarked passengers, if it is allowed to assault according to the assault rules.'

Both reading around the interwebs, here and rereading this section lead me to believe I should be able to assault, and that this is new in 5E.

If a unit shoots a transport and pops it, that unit can assault the squad that is forced to disembark. I was jipped on this early on too. :-)

if you have a written role to back you up and your oponent doe not, then he fails and you win.

if it states it in the rulebook there is no arguement, if he still argues over it, just dont play him agian lol, I think its funny when that happens, I have had the same problem, show them the rule and they still argue over it.
