Mission The Emperor’s Will in Vanguard

We both build defensive works (ruins and walls) in our deployment zones. The objectives are in his ruins on my right with the Tac Sq. and mine is in my ruin in the middle. Perry puts a tactical squad in ruins on my right, scouts and the Master of the Forge on my left and tucked back in his corner are two Thunder Cannons and 2 Dreadnoughts just to their left. With 3 Techmarines all of his works are +1 cover save. He has a Storm Talon in reserve. I have a Carapace unit and Company Command Squad on my right, Camo guys and CCS with my Warlord in my corner and my 41 man Infantry Squad and their Command Squad on my left. Perry gets 1st turn.

T1: SMs open fire and take out ½ of the large infantry sq. and 1 guy in each of 3 different units. His tac sq. starts taking saves from the exploding objective they are sitting on. IG My return fire gives his Master of the Forge a missile in the teeth and I get Slay the Warlord and First Blood. Now it’s just a matter of hanging on to my objective.

T2: SM Storm Talon comes on. His fire causes casualties to all my squads. The Infantry Platoon Command Squad which goes to ground and only has 2 guys left. The Camo sq. has one guy left. IG: Trying to take some heat off of my units around my objective I advance the Carp. Unit and 2nd CCS toward his tac sq. which is starting to take casualties from the exploding objective and my fire. I also take down the Storm Talon.

T3: It’s all a blur now but his tac sq runs off the board and my Commissar led Infantry blob runs off the board. The Carp. unit just has the Sgt. left and the CCS with Warlord has only the Warlord left. Those Thunderfire Cannons are just what the doctor ordered against my army.

T4: His Scouts move toward his objective, my 2nd CCS brakes for the board edge.

T5: Perry gets Slay the Warlord and finishes off the Carp. Sgt. I rally my 2nd CCS.

T6: Perry finishes off the Camo unit and the IPCS and I’m out of troops, only my 2nd CCS is left and the game ends.

Out shot by marines! I was hoping so hard that the game would end on turn 5 that I forgot we needed to roll for Night Fight! Either one would have netted me the game. The final score 2-4 to Perry and the Pendragons.

Uh, it seems to me your lists are vastly different. The SM list has lots of points invested in killing troops and resisting fire, and the IG list has lots of points invested in upgrades of negligible benefit.

I think your "stand and shoot" plan was not very practical for foot MEQ. The company command squads could have accomplished the same tasks at half the points, and several of your units had no greater than 24" range. If you want to play a short ranged fire-fight, you need delivery methods via outflank or transports.

Are you model or budget limited? I would be interested to see another report with a more well-rounded IG list. I'm guessing you didn't dent the TFC or either dread. One lascannon at 1000 points is likely 3-4 short...

As a former SM player and current Ork player, I would see those CCS as very tempting targets. 1/3 of your points are invested in 14 T3 models with 4+ saves. That's prime pickins for a bike squad, a drop pod, lootas or a Trukk squad. A single heavy flamer or kombi-skorcha can vaporize 170 points with a 5 point upgrade.

Good Luck! I hope you continue your battle reports. It was great to read :-)
