View Full Version : Your Vote for Coolest Sci Fi Spaceship Ever

Some stuff I posted on another thread made me think of this.

What is your vote for the coolest Sci Fi Spaceship ever? A lot come to mind, Star Destroyers, Fireflies, Moira, Babylon 5, Kiingon D-7s, maybe the Tardis. Which one do you find to be the coolest?

I'm going to start the ball rolling by voicing my support for the 1978 version of the Battlestar Galactica. Not that the 2003 version isn't totally cool, I just like the lines of the old one better and the exposed forward bridge.

Well the Imperial Star Destroyer is almost erotic in its classic simplicity, but I think my favourite might be the Destiny Ascension/Asaro dreadnoughts:

Which basically boiled down to 'Well, if the prerequisite for canon, to which you are holding an exceptionally rigid view, is that unless it is directly seen or stated on screen in one of the episodes or films, your existence is violating the canon since you have never been in one of the episodes. You probably have a knife rack downstairs in the kitchen, in order to retain the integrity of the show you love, only one thing to do.'

The Starfuries from Babylon 5 are high on my list, largely because they look like they were designed by someone writing science fiction rather than pure fantasy--which is to say that they actually make sense, mechanically, while the vast vast majority of science fiction space ships, including every one that I've seen posted in this thread (I haven't read the whole thread, yet) do not.

But, if it's just a penis-measuring competition, there pretty much isn't a ship out there that competes with a GOU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_types_of_the_Culture#General_Offensive_Unit). Also, they have a better sense of humor.

The prequels definitely had their moments--and a far better overarching plot than the originals (which didn't, really, have much of an overarching plot at all).

Also, I, too, like the look of the Venator, though that opening scene in, what, episode 3--the "big" space battle over Coruscant--made me lose any lingering shreds of respect I had for Star Wars space-shipery. Crew-serviced, cannon-style ship guns firing in broadsides as two capital ships fly within feet of each other in a scene that would make even a cheesy pirate movie cringe a little inside? Seriously. Not cool.

Well, I suppose the difficulty with that is that a 'modern' method of capital ship warfare (I say modern, it's been the method used since the 1940s) would be achingly dull to show from a visuals perspective, especially one where the primary anti-capital ship weapons are far too large to be used by the (completely superfluous) fighters and bombers involved. It's the same reason that, since there's been more effort made to involve flyers in 40K (since Double Eagle, really) there've been a few references to 'smart missiles' like the ones used by aircraft today being banned due to being too close to AI for comfort or something, so as to bring dogfighting back. It might be how it's done today, but 'over the horizon' naval and aerial combat's just boring.

Oh, definitely. I completely understand. Still, there're better "cinematic" ship fights and worse ones, and that's one of the worse ones. See Babylon 5 (again) for a better (though far from perfect) example in television and David Weber's Honor Harrington books for a much, much better example in print. Though Surface Detail still has my favorite example of a space battle in it.

Hiller's above rant in Independence Day is awesome. I liked the movie's battle scenes except for a shot during the battle over Area 51 that accidentally showed the LA skyline. Bad editing there.

One of the challenges Babylon 5 has/had is that the graphics look so bad it hurts the show, but I agree that the actual ship designs are pretty realistic, to the degree that any of this stuff is "realistic."

It seems to me that the closest analogy to space combat today would be submarine vs. submarine warfare. Hostile environment, any major breech likely means the whole crew dies, relatively little hope of rescue in a crippled vessel, no visual sighting of the enemy, very few projectiles but each one is enormously expensive and powerful, the first ship to detect the other has a huge advantage, etc. etc. -Not very visually exciting though.

I suppose one of the closest analogies to that then, at least in 'science fiction people have watched' would be the nebula battle in The Wrath of Khan, where thanks to the radiation, there's no shielding, practically no sensors and visuals are pretty much down to the mkI eyeball. Aside from the impressive-on-that-budget effects and the surprisingly well done tension in the scene, it's quite a quiet battle scene, more akin to a sniper duel than a tank battle.

Which is odd considering Trek's battle scenes tend to be really, really bad for realism and such.

Aside from the impressive-on-that-budget effects and the surprisingly well done tension in the scene, it's quite a quiet battle scene, more akin to a sniper duel than a tank battle.

Which is odd considering Trek's battle scenes tend to be really, really bad for realism and such.

Sort of. Visibility being "down to the mkI eyeball" would leave a ship in a nebula almost entirely dysfunctional, and the odds of two ships running into each other in one would be (literally) astronomically low. Nebulas are huge and the effective range of the eyeball is, in comparison, tiny.

As much as I love Star Wars and Firefly...I think the White Star from Bablyon 5 takes the cake.

In terms of iconic, and in terms of personal attachment, this is a personal favourite. Number one because it completely rejigged everything we knew about spaceship design for science fiction, number two because I spent two weeks building the model in c4d a few months back.

For learning to do CG modelling, there are few designs out there better than Matt Jeffries' Type Nine Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser.
