We are Night Lords of the Eighth Legion, and we have come for you.
No doubt you have heard of us, no matter what planet you crawl upon.
We have raided the most protected, sacked the most defended,
Killed the mightiest, and endured the most unspeakable.
You cannot stop us from delivering the most gruesome death imaginable.
No hiding spot is good enough, no wall is strong enough,
No blade is sharp enough to protect you.
We will tear the flesh from your bones.
We will consume your weak body.
We will coat the altars and idols you hold dearest in your blood.
And we will pile your bones as a warning to the others.
And I promise you, we will enjoy it.
You will give us what we want.
Fear us.
Worship us.
We are the true masters of the galaxy, for we rule the shadows.
We shall be given dominion and terror will be our rod.
We shall visit you come nightfall.
And no man nor god shall stand in our way.
WE HAVE COME FOR YOU!
AVE DOMINUS NOX!

The army is for the most part complete, I will add pics and background story as I write/take them.
Pictures should be up in the next couple of hours.

Shouldn't this go in the 40k Background section? or possibly in the modeling section if you are gonna talk about the painting and modeling.

This is going to generally be a full display of my army, with a little discussion of lists, construction and backgrounds on the side. It really didn't seem to fit any of the major categories, and since there isn't a specific Army section that I have found, I figured General would be the best place to put it.

Sorry the pics aren't that great, but I cannot find my digital camera and had to resort to my phone. If you want to see particular models in greater detail, please ask and I'll take as good a picture as I am able.

from what i can see it seems alright! i cant judge the painting from those photos (try to find the macro function on your phones camera, that should help!)

I like that you dont have the silly bat wing helmets

Agreed, not every Night Lord should have those helmets, they should only be spread out over the army.
This army looks great, albeight fuzzy. Make sure you display your list, interested to see what you have planned!

Thank you! Once I find a way to, I'll put much better photos up. I do have a couple of lists, but they seem to be not working at all currently, so after a bit of planning I'll post a few.

Five consecutive losses, four of which were against Space Marines or variants thereof...
I think there are several things I need to start doing with my lists:
*Keep points costs to a minimum- although fluff might say otherwise, I need to prevent my army from being outnumbered as much as possible
*Stick to playing smaller points matches- once we get up to 1500pts and higher, I notice that other codices are able to effectively produce units that are tooled up to the point of being near-indestructible, or else spam things that easily wipe my force off the board, something that I cannot currently do with my models.
*Build more of my daemonic allies- while my Keeper of Secrets gets shot to death immediately after deepstriking 90% of the time (it doesn't help that I made him huge, but come on, it's a Greater Daemon), I found that my Daemonettes, even in a small squad size of 7, are really good at getting their job(s) done as long as I keep them in cover. Looking forward to adding my Horrors and Plaguebearers into the mix.
*Keep using my recently-built Aegis Line (a wall from an imperial city that my cultist group has mounted their quad gun behind, after painting graffiti in blood). It's been great giving that cover save to the cultist mob, and a twin-linked anti-flier weapon can never be a bad thing these days.
Has anyone else been having solid luck/success with the new codex lately, and could you give me advice?
Before anyone asks, my luck during the last five matches was fairly average, I played fairly well with minimal mistakes, and in several matches I had what seemed to be an overwhelming advantage early on. Each and every time I was overpowered with what seemed to be some combination of better gear, options, and sheer numbers.

It might help to know what the combinations were that you had difficulty with. My general feeling is that it is counter-productive to attempt to out-ridiculous ridiculous spam or deathstar-type units, but better to adjust tactics to mitigate the damage they can do.

Right, sorry I wasn't specific but today's been rather busy.
On the side of Orks, Nob Bikers with every possible upgrade yet no characters to challenge in CC.
Space wolves- Thunder Wolves with storm shields all over and unnaturally good luck on saves.
Space Marines- gunline with Aegis, thunderfire cannon, terminator squads, and drop-podding death company
Tyranids- Multiple Tervigons counting as troops surrounded by waves of termagaunts (in squads of 30), with a drop-podding Doom of Malantai
I never intended to suggest I would want to out-spam or out-deathstar other armies. I keep my lists as balanced and well-representative of my warband's fluff as possible. I just would like suggestions as to how I can improve my odds of victory. Some time tonight, I'll come up with a list or two and post them for review.

the helbrute is really cool, and it looks like you have some nice scratch built rhinos.

Thanks! The rhino on the left is a scratch build but the other one is GW. This army is the first one I've had with multiple vehicles and, painting them in the same patterns, I really like how they all look together.
I tried making the Helbrute different from the others I had seen, reaper autocannon from the Chaos Terminators box, hand/arm piece with the autocannon and sword on the other leftover from the Prince. Using the sword arm plus a few extra chains from Rat Ogres to represent a Power Scourge. Only problem is 90% of the time he gets blown up turn one, so...

Okay, after considering everything, here's what I've got so far:
Chaos Lord, replace CC Weapon with Combi-Flamer [75]
Helbrute, Reaper Autocannon, Power Scourge [120]
18 Cultists, 2 Flamers, 8 Autoguns [100]
10 Chaos Space Marines, replace Boltguns with CC Weapons, 2 Flamers, give Champion a Power Sword, Rhino [200]
10 Chaos Space Marines, Heavy Bolter, Icon of Vengeance, Rhino [210]
3 Chaos Bikers, 2 Plasma Guns [100]
Predator, Heavy Bolter sponsons [95]
Obliterator [70]
Obliterator [70]
Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line, Quad Gun [100]
Allies:
Herald of Tzeentch, Bolt of Tzeentch, Master of Sorcery [85]
5 Horrors, Bolt of Tzeentch [95]
12 Daemonettes, Transfixing Gaze, Instrument of Chaos [178]
9 Flesh Hounds, Fury of Khorne [145]

The Lord stays with the Cultists, manning the Quad Gun. That's a hell of a lot of wounds behind some of the heaviest cover in the game, ready to fire three flamer shots as overwatch against anything that would dare charge the mass, which depending on the mission will either hold an objective or just keep blasting away with the quad gun until enemies get close, then leap over the wall for a massed charge. Helbrute, Predator, and Obliterators handle enemy vehicles or high toughness enemies, or otherwise the greatest current threat. Bikers swoop in to snipe any 2+ armor that may be crawling around. Two squads of CSM in Rhinos grab objectives outside my deployment zone or otherwise move to where they're needed to strike, supported by dropping daemons. The Herald/Horror squad can either blast a vehicle or two from behind or fire against lightly-armored troops, the Daemonettes are a nasty CC squad at those numbers, and the Flesh Hounds are there both to support other combats going on just after they drop, and as some anti-Grey Knights which otherwise in my experience crush my army 100% of the time.

Don't know why this didn't successfully post earlier, but I'll try again.
Here's a little background story on this particular warband:
Chaos Lord Adeon Nightshade reigns over a great warband of Night Lords, with several Sorcerers and lesser Lords under him. He is however somewhat radical compared to other Night Lords. Contracting out Fabius Bile, he and several of his soldiers have been augmented and bear the touch of Slaanesh, though they do not worship or even recognize him.
This activity has attracted the attentions of a particularly powerful Keeper of Secrets and his daemonic legion, which primarily consists of daemons of Slaanesh and Tzeentch (including one Lord of Change who constantly and subtly manipulates the Keeper). They actively fight alongside and manipulate Nightshade's warband, in an attempt to drive them into pure worship of the Chaos gods.
Nightshade also actively recruits members of other warbands or any mercenaries he stumbles across in a bid for power outside the Eye of Terror. He is currently in negotiations with a Thousand Sons coven and a rogue group of Tau of the Vot'aa sept.
The army list detailed above would represent a small portion of Adeon's forces, directed by a minor Lord, as well as some daemonic allies sent by the Keeper (though the Lord of Change insisted on letting a Tzeentch Herald lead them...).

Well, for a few of the things you listed as having difficulty with, maybe a unit of Thousand Sons?

That would help vs basic marines, but none of the combinations I listed would be truly countered by them. Aegis cover saves nearly negate their one advantage vs basic marines, but everything else I described wouldn't really be threatened by them.
They would certainly be strong and useful against certain enemies, maybe would be better if paired with my Noise Marines....
I'm actually in the process of making a group of Thousand Sons and a Sorcerer, part of the reason I wrote it into my fluff.

So I've been doing a lot of thinking, and have decided that Night Lords is not the army for me. I feel that given current rules and my current collection of models, I simply cannot build an army that is competitive. That being said, after a good amount of thought I am going to re-paint all of my models in the color scheme of the very first chaos space marine army I owned, a splinter faction of the Word Bearers dedicated to Nurgle. I think a plague temple would also make a rather insidious Fortress of Redemption :)
