View Full Version : $20 St. Sucksday Budget Extension - What Should I Buy?

For reasons I won't get into, today really blows. My wife and I have decided to declare it St. Sucksday - after the medieval saint, St. Suck, who is the patron saint of really cr*ppy sh*t - and granted both of us $20 budget extensions.

The question is, what should I get?

Right now, I'm mostly into building my Blood Ravens army, so that's where I want to put the money. Here's what I've got so far (including stuff I've dropped into storage for the time being):

Terminator Librarian w/Storm Shield & Force Weapon
Hammernators
Terminator Librarian w/Storm Bolter
Terminator Chaplain w/Storm Bolter
Shooternators
Power Armor Librarian w/Force Axe & Pistol
Power Armor Captain w/Sword & Pistol
Apothecary
Company Champion

20+ Tactical Marines (1 hvy bolter guy, 1 flamer guy, 1 meltagun guy, 1 missile launcher guy, 2 plasma gun guys, 2 plasma cannon guys)
10 Sternguard Veterans
10 Assorted Scouts

1 Dreadnought (w/many swappable arms)
1 Drop Pod
2 Land Speeder Typhoons
2 Rhinos
1 Land Raider (magnetized for godhammer/redeemer/crusader)

Remember, I've got about 20$. What can should I add to my Blood Ravens collection that will be fun, cheer me up, and generally help turn this day around? Bonus points for something I can use tomorrow, but I'm willing to accept "start adding bikes!" - even though I can't buy a full squad for $20 - if you can tell me how awesome it's going to be.

Given that flyers are pretty much a must have, I'd save it and add it to whatever you have next month and buy a Stormtalon

I started thinking, and then took a quick look at the GW website, and became dismayed. When I was a kid and started out in the hobby, I remember $20 being a gold mine in terms of buying power. I could get a Rhino or maybe even 3 blisters to add a squad. Now that $20 won't even get a finecast character including the tax...

Anyhow, your $20 will only really get you close to a Scout Squad as a useable unit. I'm not sure they really fit into the theme of your army. The one thing I noticed was that you say 20+ tactical marines, and then list 4 units worth of special/heavy weapon combo. Would a few basic marines maybe round out some squads? It isn't that exciting, but it could be useful.

Or, you could go outside the box and hit Radio Shack and try to LED light one of those vehicles you already have. That's what I'm working on right now.

Dear Paladin,
Like you, I am a school teacher. I understand the ins and outs of St. Suck's Day. Go forth, my friend, and buy a bottle of wine and a pizza... it'll do more than any plastic crack will to clear your head!

Carry on, my brother! Have a good school year! Cheers. Cope

Yeah but like $20 dollars is £12 no way are you going to get pizza and wine for that, maybe I am just a snob.
Though having said that I was on holiday in champagne and I tried this one champagne that was about €3/bottle and that was nicer than a lot of champagne's I've drunk, ok it was no krug but still at that price I was laughing.

That's what I thought, maybe wine and a slab of galaxy?
Champagne is overated like all french wine. It's not dry enough anyway.

A lot depends on the pallet, I find new world wines to be much more flavoursome. Though sometimes only a Bordeaux will do

I generally prefer Australian and New Zealand Chardonnays, red certainly doesn't agree with me...

I've never drank it apart from at celebrations like weddings and such, it's not something I'd ever consider going buying myself, not a fan of sparkling wine...

We ended up going with sushi boat and bottle of sake. It worked nicely :D.

And, oh man, do you know what they did to me? I've got teachers in the audience, so I'll explain.

We lost two of our teachers (well, 1.8) to unusually low enrollment. As a result, they had to turn every schedule upside down. Unfortunately, what they communicated to us was that there would be "a few" "minor" schedule changes for "some" students. Nope, they barely left a handful of students in the same class they'd started out in.

If you're not a teacher, I'll explain. A good portion of my job is creating and maintaining a positive classroom culture. The class culture is like a bank account. You can make withdrawals - pushing the kids, making them anxious or screwing up and getting negative with them - and you must make the occasional deposit - fun time, one-on-one interaction, in-jokes - if you expect the class to stay solvent. The class culture is also kind of like an animal, in that it can survive the removal of some tissue (students) and still survive.

With this much change, however, my class culture just went up in an economic crash. They took it out back and shot it. It's like starting over on the first day of school. If I'd known it was going to be this bad, I could have prepared for it, but that would have taken communication from my principal, and this is the man who didn't warn us we were all getting layoff notices (even the ones who were going to get to stay) last year.

Furthermore, I knew that the other science teacher had some... classroom management issues. This wasn't shaping up to be his year, and he was never great at discipline. What I didn't know instead of "classroom management issues" I should have said "no classroom management system to speak of." His kids, my new students, had no basis for behavior. They expected carte blanche do do whatever they wanted.

Man, it was exhausting. I thought I'd already passed the part of the year where I have to be a disciplinarian jerkface - to establish myself - and started the part where the job begins to be fun. And with kids who have just experienced an upheaval, it's going to take even longer.

Ouch, you might want to clarify that statement. It sounds like you're trying to say teaching isn't a real job...
