I've been thinking about doing a full size Imperator Titan for a while but lacking the awesome plasticard skills of a Blackadder or Machinator, couldn't come up with a good way to do the skeleton that would be strong enough to bear the weight.
I think I have hit upon a solution in my local hardware store which is rigid PVC plumbing pipe, which is strong and light and best of all comes with pre-formed connectors that can serve for the major joints (Knees are always the hardest part).
Here are some initial sketches of what I'm thinking. Grateful for any comments/criticisms/pitfalls before I get started. Going to be a long project this (estimate 6-8 months for completion).

Legs:
MDF feet screwed onto the pipe with metal brackets, crater pieces in between toes to show its weight smashing up the ground.
Bulked out legs with a mix of shrine of the aquila GW pieces, manufactorum walls, plasticard and narrower piping for pistons.
More Pistons and Tubing around the Knees and hips with plasticard panels to disguise the plumbing joints.
Plasticard and MDF waist around the main Tee joint where the legs meet the torso.
Waist honour banner
Torso:
MDF base for the fortress with a plasticard box for the torso.
Halloween skulll with extra plating, lenses and green stuff for the head.
Plasticard panelling and other cities of death parts, including a balcony at the waist level.
Main guns:
Mix of Piping and plasticard (more detailed designs to follow) with more honour banners as on the epic model.
Fortress:
Lots of GW kits here, fortress of redemption towers and bunkers, Garden of Morr pieces, bastions etc. I have quite a few bits left over from previous terrain projects but the top is going to be most expensive, particularly if I push the boat out for FW titan guns.

I would avoid GW products if you can. I am sure you have plenty of sprue with all of the glyphs you need. I would look into mideval minutures and models of castles. Also in Ca it used to be manditory to make a model cathedrial or mission. Still a lot of plastic models available for that.

http://www.thefind.com/family/info-model-medieval-castle
Not sure if this will help as they may not be the size you need but a hell of alot cheaper than GW. I would also look into a resin casting kit. I believe they start at around $100 USD. You could then set up custom molds for items you plan to make multiples of. I have never taken on a challenge like this so I am thinking of how I would tackle it. You eat a whale one bite at a time! Best of luck.

Budget wise I expect somewhere between a warhound and reaver in cost, so a lot but not off the crazy scale.
A few more rough designs. Things will inevitably change when I get to building but it's a start.

Plumbing pipe and 2 Imperial bastions for the legs :D Also isnt this more Warlord scale? an Imperator should be a 3 year old kid in size....

It's maybe a little short, I'm working off a 50% size increase for each class:
Warhound 12"
Reaver 18"
Warlord 27"
Imperator 40" (almost 3 and a helf feet)
I also want it to stand on a 24" wide tile so there's some element of practicality here

But...Child size would give you the ability to make your opponents wet them selves when you tell them you need to go out to the car to get your model for a 5000pt game.

i do like where this is going, my only gripe is that the classic emperor titan looks very... static?
still cant wait to see this finished (and because TDA is going to make me say this anyway) AND AT BOLSCON 2013 (c) "DONT BE SOFT, HAVE A FIGHT", "yell at fuzz about font" , "see TDA and mr.mystery for details"
tehe
and for scale i think the novel "titanicus" gives a good idea of scale (and for interior idead read the OOP "dictato"

p.s. you win the internet if you name it Dictato

Going to try and cheat the knees so it is striding forward but i want the bottom part of the legs vertical just for stability. Hopefully the torso and guns will be able to rotate too for extra pose options.
Some initial scale shots with the MDF feet (will be further apart in final version) and fortress base (plus some bits I found - mirrored shot).

I'm sure it is a bit late now, but I can vouch for PVC piping skeletons being a good choice for keeping titan's upright! I did it for my warlord, who is way too big (soon to be upgraded to an Imperator) and stands at about the same height as your beast. I didn't use anywhere near as many GW bits as you are planning. I actually spent more on paint and glue than everything else in the model combined! However, mine is massively damaged and not so durable, so I think yours might just be a slightly better approach.
What I might suggest, once you have finalized the builging os some of these large hollow sections, would be to fill them with expanding builders foam. It's inexpensive, wont significantly add to the weight of the model and should stop bits/panels getting pushed in (not tomention giving you an extra surface to glue them back on to if they do somehow get prized off!)

Hmm, haven't budgeted for paints, or thought about colours yet. Good luck with your upgrade by the way.
I'm in the rummage phase of the build which is one of my favourite parts, looking for:
a) specific stuff I've saved (like some spare warhound titan leg shields to become kneecaps)
b) random stuff that inspires (like the big eyeball in the head from a necron ghost ark I used in my mechanicus force)
Here's a very early shot of the head:

and some designs for the windows in the legs:

Captain OP, im afraid what you have here is only warlord class.
youre gonna have to think bigger if what you want is imperator..
as a fellow mechanicum enthusiast, you may need to expand your horizons or simply settle for miraculous might of the warlord class.
happy building and well done so far.
Edit: felt like adding some constructive advice.
for your torso and other large forms needing bulk and support. i recommend a building material named Extruded polystyrene, aka blue polystyrene or pink polystyrene. is High density and wonderful for large shape making not at all like cutting and shaping a block of white compacted styrofoam balls.
extruded polystyrene is a building material for houses and construction and available from many hardware places.

I'd personally vote against the rightmost image. A dragon just doesn't feel appropriately Imperium-y enough for me.
Awesome work on the faceplate! What poor plastic skeleton died for that? I actually think this is the first time I've seen someone use a plastic skull as part of a titan, rather than just for terrain :D

Yes, think I need to make it mechanical If I'm going to use it. I like the aquila in number 2 so I'm keeping that and will swap the mushroom cloud for something else.
Skull was £1 from the supermarket, cheapest component so far not counting bits I already have.
I have some of the blue insulation stuff wehat I don't have is the hot wire cutter. It can be cut with other things (used a bread knife before, but very unpleasant) but I've read that it;s best to use one.

Why not do a theme on the windows, i.e. similar, but different designs on each one?

like to point out that although the dragon isnt "imperium-y" you should probably consider that the imperator titan is a warmachine of the machine cult and not the emperor. in fact the adeptus mechanicus of mars are only allied with the imperium and not necessarily a fragment of them. the emperor acknowledges them as a seperate belief and knows their presence is pure as they worship the machine spirit which is depicted as the "Dragon of Mars" (as written in the black library book 'Mechanicum' and is infact moreso appropriate to the banner design as all the others.
all i will argue is that the dragon as a stain glass window design doesn't work. the glass window representing the church like holyness of the impirium of man. while the cold metal sculptures and metalwork of the mechanicum best presents their symbol of the Dragon of mars :)

If you want the toes to be bigger, maybe add another layer of MDF board under the current one as a sort've platform shoe, with wider/longer toes? You'd have to add more to the rubble so it'd touch the board, but if you're doing something as intense an Imperator you might as well make sure everything's near-perfect.

When you put it on a Realm of Battle section it really drives home how big it is! Not much in the way of battlefield maneuvring for this guy!

I really need to look around more on these forums I am missing a lot. this is some impressive build and I wish you luck with it. I think you are dead on with the height and width and am glad to see you didn't oversize it. 40" inches seems to be the maximum believable height for a titan.
Question...... Did I see Mars Warhound greaves a few pages back?
isotope99
11-20-2012, 04:28 PM
Yes, the loyalist warhound comes with 2 sets, a plain set and w/ aquilas. I used the aquilas on my thousand sons titan below (not pre-heresy accurate I know but the look so good) leaving me the plain ones which I think will make really good kneecaps when I get that far.

Looking good, and the toes are looking better now! Like how you've added plenty of smaller, point defense weaponry, always seemed weird that it's been omitted from Reavers etc.

When it comes to scaling these things, scale in Epic/fiction is so very inconsistent, and considering in-fluff each of these things are unique creations from different Forgeworlds that take centuries to make, I like to think that anyone who's got the stones/skills to actually go and make one of the buggers has made a Titan entirely accurate to the scale of that particular variant made on its home forgeworld when it was created.

Run out of green stuff so not done much more on the legs but have managed to fit them to the feet for the rest of the assembly and the whole thing is now much more stable. Next step is to fatten them up a bit with extra pistons, armour plating and tubing and paint up the groin banner.

I agree. Some day I may have to make a list of different sizes listed in the old Adeptus Titanicus/ Epic rules and the Horus Heresy books. I swear some are described in feet and others at the same number in meters.

So far I've been trusting to instinct and my rough sketches that the relative scales would work but I'm starting to get enough WIP components to see them side by side. Looking OK I think. the head's a little smaller but I actually think that adds to the sense of size:

It is looking very nice indeed. As for the head, yes it is a little smaller but yours doesn't have the massive hanging chin that the Epic one does, so without that I'd say its a pretty fair comparison, and yeah even in this stage the thing is already starting to look very daunting!

Awesome work, can't wait to see more. As the head goes, It's about the same size as the barrel of the 2nd gun...looks good, and you're right; it will add to the scale and make it look larger.
Also, great choice going with the red scheme on the windows. Gives it a contrast to all of that grey/blue.

Is that castle piece going to be attached to the body permanently? If not, that can be a really cool piece of terrain too, like a mountain fortress. Could have it be part of the Titan and have a Terrain mode too, were it can be placed on a mountain or another high up structure. Had that idea pop into my head while looking at the near finished piece.

Had a bit of a disaster trying to get the legs off again for painting in that they came apart under the torsion. I've re-epoxied them but am going to need to wrap the feet and spray/pain in situ. Fortunately, they're the least detailed part of the build, basically just silver & grey so should be possible. Going to have to be careful with the Torso design though.

The guns are partly supposed to be a bit more functional and the banners add some colour, but I am also running low on bits (and time as I want to take it to WHW in May and I have a holiday coming up).
The titan's full height is finally revealed (and the core is taking the fortress weight without the pipe-spine being in place so I'm feeling a bit better about the possibility of it buckling jenga style when I put all the pieces on.

No, I just have trouble carrying them without it making unpleasant creaking and cracking sounds and the tile makes a good tray. Was considering entering it into armies on parade just for laughs but I don't have time to really go to town on the painting. It looks great from mid distance but falls down a bit close up.
I'm having weight balance and weight distribution issues (I'm talking about the titan, don't be rude) when I test assemble it as there's currently, too much weight in the back.. still the titan) but as I haven't finished final assembly yet I'm hoping the extra head and frontplate will pull it back into balance. The screws on the outside of the waist board were also pretty dumb.

Ok good news, bad news.
Good news, I got the Titan upright long enough to take some photos
Bad news, if you were wondering whether the construction was strong enough to take the weight of the titan fully assembled. No, No it wasn't. It stayed up for about half an hour before the waist rotated forward and tipped off half the fortress (much superglue needed to fix but I'll get there). However, now that I have identified the weak point I can try and fix it, probably with some brutal, low tech wood screws through the pipe joints to stop them twisting - which with hindsight I should have done before.
