Ok, so i've been avoiding this manly bc it'll make me responsible to actually work at a respectable pace, but i'm going to post it anyway. As you can see in my sig, i'm assembling a large amount of the RG chapter. The following list is as it stands now with a few rules added in (so i don't forget what i need to model). For the future i may add another scout squad or 2 so i can get up to 4 scout squads fielded at one time. But not now... Some of this may also change once the FW IA8 comes out. But that being said a few unique things exist to take note of: Corax and his guard of course, while i worked to get all the named characters i could find out there in i took some liberty with the rest of the named characters, some of you may notice a name or two...;)...the two dreads from 1st Co. are twins, the Sgt from 10th Co. is a Commissar from the Death Korps who has joined the RG bc he was so impressed with their tactics and tenacity against greater numbers, i'm sure i'm forgetting stuff, but i'm tired....lmk you initial thoughts and feel free to answer my ridiculous poll. Thanks guys for your input and for all the peeps that helped me with named characters. Peace.

I'll be posting pics later tonight\ this afternoon. i'm at mixed stages here. Some are finished, some are unassembled, some are base coated...you know the drill.

Now here's the real question:

Are you going with all beakie heads as RG fluff suggests you should? If so, then kudos to you, my fine sir. Otherwise, you get a polite golf clap ;)

Well here's the problem with that. If i'm not re modeling the entire freaking torso of most of the marines, then i'm using Mk7 Aquilla pattern armor with a MK6 Corvius beaky head. So it's not really fluff...now that being said i'm more inclined to mod the armor that's non-aquilla like this guy did on his pre-heresy helmets...

http://sonsofcorax.freeforums.org/my-pre-heresy-ravenguard-project-heavy-traffic-t34.html

That being said, it will likely be a mix of his style MK4 green stuffed heads, Mk6 beaks, and Mk7. I'm going to lean toward most of the head's being MK4 and Mk6 though. so how about half a kudos and three golf claps with the last one really loud?:D

Thanks mate. I have to refine my photo skills apparently, lol Sadly all the great detail on the dreads can't be seen. on the Banner on the Sarcophagus their names are written in, and all the combination of bronze and steel looks pretty nice i think...Obviously the Ironclads are WIP but gives an idea...

Land Speeders are up....no paint yet, just conversions...

Spending time working on first Ironclad. detailing arms and weapons. also cleaning up mold lines from a bunch of Tac squads and command squad. Slow going, but it's coming. Lmk if you want pics of the paint job as it goes....

Do you guys think that the SM bumped shoulder pad should be used to id Artificer armor or with beaked helmets for MKIV armor? Any opinions out there?

You just need a second light source. Put it on the other side opposite the one you have and you'll see some nice improvement.

Edge highlighting on armor in progress. I keep finding lots of before and after with highlighting black, but no first highlight, second highlight, etc.

I'd also like to see how you are painting the chapter icon if/when you do so.

Out of curiosity, are you painting them with the old color scheme (red assault, green tactical, white veteran) or are you going with the codex coloration (red 3rd company, green 4th, etc.)?

Cool i'll get on that. As for the squad designation, i'm going with both. the left shoulder trim designates the company, the right what squad they are in. So my 3rd Co Devasttors would have Red left shoulder trim and Yellow right trim. Sgt's get Red helmets and or red knee pads (usually on the guys with out helmets and with bumpy shoulder guards).

Icons are based in (the short way) Codex grey, lightening with space wolves grey, and skull white, to skull white highlights. i'll show you some in levels...

busy weekend in general coming up, friends bday, and company in town, so don't know how much i'll get done, but i'll keep you all posted.

ok so no new highlights pics or pics for WIP's, why you ask? let me tell you. Friends in town over the weekend kind of suck up your time, still trying to figure out life with this new pooch in the house (pitbulls can be rather strong willed), and then i finally finished taking mold lines off all those tac marines that sat in a box top from a drop pod and lo-and-behold what did i find underneath a strike force box? you got it, another box of Tac marines...goodie...

So now i'm scrapping more mold lines off more tac marines...whoopie. However, i have a game tomorrow night but i'll be diligently working on mold lines until then, maybe i'll enlist the Tau player to help....and by the way is it mold lines or mould lines? and does anyone understand the american language for that matter? any english teachers out there?

It's mold, and no, no one understands English. There's a reason kids here take English every year of their schooling even though they already speak it.

And no worries on the pictures. I'm in the process of moving, so most of my stuff is packed up. I've been doing some detail work on my AoBR dread when I have time, but I'm not working on my rhino yet, which is really where I'm worried about edge highlights.

Yeah right, i have ESL friends that understand our language better than i do...sad...where did those pesky adverbs go on the diagram chart again....anywho, if the Rhino is what interests you more than the Tac guys i can totally do one or a Drop pod or any other vehicle you like so you can see vehicle sized line highlights...lmk

Your eyes are going my friend since you left the shadows, check out who the RG Master of the Forge is...and yeah no 8th...you know, 6th has that bike thing, 7th has that land speeder thing, 8th has that....reserve thing? lol jk. I don't think i can fit anymore marines in there and as it is for my birthday my friends got me a predator....not very RG but what am i going to do, start that Crimson Fist army...no thanks, your MotF skills will lovingly embrace it to the rest of my swollen RG list....now i just need another name....

Thanks man, i've tried to put a lot of work in to this project and make it really awesome (hence all the time scrapping mold lines). I like fluff so i thought that'd be a cool touch to the two dreads from 1st Co. Rarely are Dreads portrayed as people with emotions and memories but i think it's ok. Creative license if you will...

so Game time tonight i almost forgot and now off to scrape...I promise once these guys are scraped pics will start coming of WIP and painting stages...lots of stuff is already modeled just needs paints...

Rhino highlights would be great!

I'm actually building my first 40k army, and I've been doing a LOT of reading on the background, company markings, and everything else I can get my hands on. I've done ten scouts and twenty marines to completion and I'm working on the dreadnaught and some termies. It's my first time painting models since I was probably 8 years old building planes with my dad, so I'm just a bit out of practice. The marines don't look bad without highlights, but they obviously aren't as polished. The rhino just looks...dull right now, so I know I'll have to highlight that. I've really been rushing a bit to get something to throw on the table and start playing, so I'll be slowing down on the painting and paying more attention to detail in the next month or so. I have a feeling the new marine battleforce is in my future, done up real nice as the 4th company...

Quick update, i have been modeling my little pants off.. Psycho i finished a rhino with no time to post pics, hopefully before this weekend or even tonight mayhaps...we have a lot of people come through the city this time of year which eats up my model time....also beginning scenery painting with another guy from our game group tonight...

That being said all Tac squads have been assembled and are awaiting paint and pictures....i'll post units in progress shots soon along with transports.

I started greenstuffing finally for the first time in my life...it takes some getting used to, but i can see how i'm going to like it.

So big question, Should i beak all models with helmets or give them the MK 4 helmet style i posted a link to earlier in the thread, or save time and leave they as is?

opinions?

Psychoswap, here's a link to my photo album with 2 stages of highlights on a rhino....http://s986.photobucket.com/albums/ae347/therealjohnny5/Raven%20Guard%20Army/

Beyond that new pics of all 6 WIP Tac squads and transports, Ironclad Alerin is finished, on the Photo album is a variant load out. Thunderfire is also posted. Haven't decided what's next...any requests?

so after gaining the wisdom of the forum, i've gone back and reworked all my previously painted models with Adeptus BG and Badab Black washing to build up to black. While i don't think the highlights are coming out yet quite like i like, it's getting better with each model. we had some crap weather that prevented me from spraying anything, so i'm hoping in the next day or two to be able to bust out the spray gun to speed things up, especially now that i'm going backwards over some older work, but i really like how it's coming out. For productivity sake i don't think i'll be doing that for the few other vehicles i have finished already, a drop pod and rhino...i'll just move forward with the new ones.

I've had a really hard time with decals though...i've been trying to get them to smooth on test models but to no avail....i can't figure out how to get them smooth on curved surfaces like shoulder pads and knees....any help would be much appreciated as it would save me considerable time painting emblems....

So the final emblems are the only thing standing between me and a completely finished unit...and now things should go a bit faster....especially bc i remembered about my spray gun. +) - that would be my trademark cyclops smiley...

How are you doing it? I've had success with using gloss varnish before applying the decal, wet surface, apply decal, towel off excess moisture, then decal solvent to soften it. If it's suitable, I'll cut off as much of the clear surround as I can, incuding in the gaps of the assault and devestator symbols. Makes them more fragile though.

This is a good tutorial (http://www.paintingclinic.com/clinic/decals.htm)

And re mould, the answer is both but it depends where you are (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences#-our.2C_-or)

therealjohnny5
12-07-2009, 06:24 PM
Brilliant on the mould issue...those kind of inconsistencies in the american language always confuse me....thanks for the tutorial...i'll try some of their suggestions...see what happens with it.

On the modeling front 3rd Co. Apothecary Damias has been modeled with deathwatch pad and scored powerfist and jump pack...debating on servitor skull...off to model devastators and more command squad goodness...

One more question, All beaky heads or no? seems a little stale if i did all the helmets beaks....

therealjohnny5
12-21-2009, 06:42 PM
do di do do...so 3rd Co. Champion is finished, scored some good ebay deals for my HQ Honor guard conversions, second tac squad is finished, Magnetizing a bunch of backpacks and such now, as well as painting away...have so much to do it's ridiculous....i spend a lot of time with my models, it'll be my downfall....

next on the slot is model another character, then another tac squad gets paint...spray gun's been helping but weather had been preventative on using it more....tomorrow i'll pick up more propellent, and start washing models with it....hopefully that'll speed things up...

also scored decal solvent so decals are now a go....goodie...

Peace.

Weathering on the drop pod is nice. Question though, I'm surprised at the amount of red you've used on the pod, is that company specific? I'd always imagined Raven Guard pods almost entirely black

yeah third company color marking is red. i wanted to try and break up the solid black color scheme. so i'm using company markings and bronze shades to mix it up. Similar concept to the Rhinos. Red shades denote third company. This all comes from some reading i was doing that said the colors are used to identify different squads and units on the battle field. makes sense on a small level but also on a vehicle level as if you're zipping by on a blasted hazy battlefield and see that DP, "Oh hey that's where the 3rd Co's Ironclad landed, or whatnot...

so far last but not least from command squad, standard bearer. Standard is magnetized as are packs, have both jump and regular ones magged up. This was a cool OOP JP chaplain that i got off ebay already painted. took the pack off and am going to use it on my Chapter Champion model since it's a little more fancy. had to do away with some chaplain markings and replace them with command sprue bits as well as the drill out the head and replace it. The banner is from an ironclad. on an aside i find it odd that this was a chaplain model without a crozias arcanum...

yeah it's so similar to the current one you can really tell they based the current one off this model...almost all of the details are there.

Thanks man. on the vehicles, i'm very practical in my tastes. so i'm not into lots of banners and really about what kind of markings would likely be practical on the battle field. so i'm trying to make it all fit when you see it all together. For sake of ease i'm going to have a banner for every unit that's magnetized so when they are in any transport the banner can identify them as being inside. then i can take it off when they are disembarked. It'll beat having a sgt or special weapons guy riding around on the back...

i'd like to also make unit specific marking since the RG are notoriously independent and work separately. This way each transport will have squad specific markings and it will be one more subtle thing that will bring the units together and the army as a whole. I think with an army with a basic color scheme and to be true to fluff it helps to do stuff like that.hopefully the basing will help as well. i'm going to try and get each unit with a slightly different taste on the bases to add to their individual fluff and builds.

As for the champion thanks, i was really happy how diesel he came out looking. Those shoulder pads are ridiculously huge to me. i love it.

anyway finishing up Scout bike conversions that can be seen in another thread...no one likes a double poster. i'll post finished pics of the squad here. schlepping my way through assembling a predator and magnetizing all its options. hoping to get back to painting tomorrow. probably assault squad for 3rd Co now that i've converted the Sgt with LC's and magnetized backpacks...if not, maybe devastators...we'll see what tomorrow brings after Jujitsu...

Okie dokie, so i'm back from a hectic summer of taking students around the city, and that means back on project. Now as an update i've changed my focus for my army, i decided to create a successor chapter of the RG so i can play all marine codecies. This means there are counts as for every unique character in BA,SW,SM,BT,DA,C:SM, and all that goodness...i figured it'd be cheaper than building different marine armies, as i'm not one to muck around with the same list forever. I also couldn't in good conscience be that guy fielding a RG army with a BA codex. I'm too fluff oriented to do that. So anyway, here we go. All previously finished marines are being updated in new color scheme, and here's what's on my paint station now.
