What the deuce? Where the hell did this (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod1740029a) come from and why was I not told about it? Have I missed it in another thread, because I don't recall seeing any chatter on it. I'd be mighty annoyed to have missed out on it if I collected CSM. I'm going to have to make sure I'm glued to the GW site for any armies I collect from now on.
And I have to say, I like the look of the launch bundle (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod1740031a).

Nobody knew about it. Because of course GW was going to be totally unable to control the information flow and stop things leaking, you see, and even trying to do so would prevent people from buying things!
It existed, nobody caught it, it was released in a quantity of 1,000, it sold out within about fifty seconds. Sorry! :)

I hate those launch bundles. To be fair they're fairly open about them just saving you adding things one at a time, but you think they could throw in the psychic cards or something so you get at least a little saving.
The collectors edition was mentioned but not given much prominence. Sold out in a day, say what you like about GW they seem to know how to shift limited edition stuff to their gullible customers.
Now to order me the limited edition Heresy novella about the White Scars... ..... (oh crap)

Agreed. From nowhere. I probably wouldn't have bought this one, but I will be on guard for the next one.

Which is exactly what they want! It's like they know what they're doing, you know.

I don't really see the point of the launch bundles myself, I either want more of somethings or I don't want others at all so having a bundle would be pointless as I'd have to go adding things anyway.
The limited edition thing does interest me, I will do my best to get one for Eldar when they are released.

They're for people like my brother. His initial reaction to seeing the preorders was "goddammit, I want all of this". And I don't blame him!

As you all know, Australians already pay a lot more than most other territories for GW products.
When I grabbed the WD, my local manager asked if I wanted to advance order the codex, or even the limited edition one. I asked him how much they cost. The normal codex was $81 (thereabouts, can't be bothered checking actual price lol) and the limited edition was $132 (thereabouts).
I'll be honest, that was the first time my eyes had ever opened wide out of shock.
He kinda said "yeah...." haha.
The bundle is good I think. There's no discount but it saves you some time and shipping costs I think.

Eh I bought my limited edition from the UK, got it sent to family, cheaper than getting the regular codex over here.
I bought the limited edition, I have always been a choas player for the last 15 years, so thought why not, I like that it doesnt have any words on the cover, also when I turn up to tournaments it should be easy to tell which one is mine :)

Does anyone know if there's actually any difference at all other than the cover? There's no way in hell I would ever pay £20 for a different cover.

cover, silver page lining, and the book marker. If your interested in this kind of item, its not for gaming its for the fact that you want to own one of only 1000 printings of something special

I had no idea the advance orders were even going up yesterday, so was pretty amazed to see them there, and that the limited edition codex was sold out at 11am. I wouldn't buy one though personally, each edition I buy the limited edition rulebook because there have been some beautiful pieces released, but this time round the special edition rulebook was a total waste of money, almost no different to the normal one, so I wouldn't have bought a special edition codex, £20 is too much for what will be almost nothing different. Pretty shocked to see the basic one at £30 to be honest.

Immediately after the Dark Vengeance Limited Edition, which was $8 more than standard but included an awesome extra mini that'd normally be valued at ~$20, this "we flicked red spots on the front, painted the page edges silver and glued a ribbon to it, now pay $33 more" version is kind of laughable.
Seriously, DV:LE is the way to go; this is a game centred around collecting awesome plastic mans, if you want to give Limited Editions some weight, include an awesome plastic man(s)!

Like most LE things it is an opportunity for hardcore fans to show how hardcore they are.:p I'm going to try and get the eldar one but I won't be upset if I miss out.

You mean you haven't got it yet? I was on that about 10 minutes after release.
I'm surprised they didn't put much out about the limited edition codex, but now people know they are doing them, there will be a big surge when the next army comes out. I'm guessing it will be a 40k thing only, I'd be surprised if they suddenly started doing them for Warhammer when they haven't for any of the current edition.

Let me see, in USD it was $33 more than the normal one. I would guess from my limited knowledge of book production the additional production cost was maybe $5, maybe less. So 1,000 books x $28 = $28,000 additional gross profit in 50 seconds.
I would be willing to bet that next time around there will be more than 1,000 printed.
As far as the ridiculous price, if people are willing to snap them all up like that the price is not ridiculous, in fact it is too low. So bet on that too, more paint splatter on the next one and a higher price.
The economics of this game are truly fascinating. Too bad it isn't just a thought exercise for me and it affects my wallet in such a serious way.

Your estimate on the production costs of the limited run are WELL off. It's only 1000 copies a short run like that generates a huge cost for the expected return its more than $5 per book over the run made up of 100000 books.

I picked up the bound and slip-sleeved 4th Ed Limited Edition Codex at Games Day UK a couple of years back for a fiver. They don't stay "premium" for long.

It would be nice if the limited editions had bonus content, but this would have to be superflous because you can't have core rules + bonus rules for those who would pony up the cash. Although I suppose this does kinda happen if you allow IA in your games. I remember back in 5th one of my mates got the super mega deluxe version it cost him loads and he was dissapointed to discover that my version had everythinh his did but for a fraction of the price, and I got free templates and junk.
