Actually it sounds quite nifty, I approve of it being a stand-alone expansion, hopefully that implies they aren't expecting people to be taking heaps of pre-Heresy stuff in regular games of 40k. I for one will be refusing to play against armies with SM jetbikes in unless it is whatsisname of the Raventhingy.

I don't see what's wrong with someone taking Jetbikes with their regular 40k army, as long as they are only used as bikes and equipped the same then i don't see the issue.

Looking forward to the pre-heresy Terminator armour.

Because the Imperium only has one jetbike left in the 41st millennium.:p If they are just using bike rules that is fine, but in the 41st millennium the IoM does not have access to jetbikes so I will not be playing armies that include them. Unless they are willing to let me take pre-Fall eldar technology too, fair is fair.

Sun Switch: At the start of each turn, roll a D6. On a 2+ you succeed in turning off the sun, game ends immediately as an Eldar victory.

Eldar player rolls a dice.

On a 1 the planet explodes, kills everyone.
On a 2+ the sun explodes, the eldar escape and the entire other team are killed.

Good game!

One of the rulesheets shown is for a former Deathguard psyker (Death Guard hated psykers pre/mid-heresy), who is now referred to as a "Blackshield" (the term is used in the Deathwatch to refer to an anonymous Space Marine volunteer, but the Deathwatch are not active in this period).

Since they're only doing Traitor legions in this book (no outside codices needed for the campaign), but also need a conflict, perhaps the Blackshields are one of the new "dark secrets", pre-heresy renegade marines?

Unless they are willing to let me take pre-Fall eldar technology too, fair is fair.I'd imagine that the Legion rules are well balanced, since it sounds like they'll be pulling in outside Codices for Imperial Army/Xenos later in the series, should be fine. Plus, Eldar are immortal, their tryst with a Legion is likely just playing out a Great Crusade battle :P

Ah! It does look very nice indeed :)

Nice to finally the jetbikes and Cataphrakt terminators! they look very good. Can't deny I'm a little tempted despite being Xenos-scum. Fair enough at the first book focussing on the Legions - look forward to future books featuring hopefully Custodes and Sisters Of Silence - both of which seem to crop up occasionally in project logs on forums.

As for future xeno stuff, I hope they'll introduce the Cabal, Megarachnids and Laer. I admit to being a bit of a Cabal fanboy as quite a few of the races in it are like something right out of Stapledon's Star Maker (and if you havent read that, you don't deserve to call yourself a sci-fi fan and should buy a copy asap).

I am actually really excited about this, EG, they can just use it as proxy normal stuff with you so they still get to play with their pretty new toys!

Personally I can't wait for the book that will do the 8th proud, and hopefully show the decline of Batma---- Ahem Konrad Way--- Err Curze into complete lunacy. With 3,000 or so points of Night Lords, it can only go up with these books.

It's especially good that they're doing legion specific books/organizations because in the case of Chaos Marines, it sometimes makes more sense to play them as counts as something else if you want to match the -Well thought out background-. Either way I'm excited that Chaos is getting a ton of love, both from GW and Forgeworld. It's about time the Bad Guys got a role.

Also, I noticed one of the scenarios had 'Istvaan Mysterious Terrain' listed as one of the rules. However it did have '(Optional)' listed straight afterwards at least :)

I wonder how whacky the Istvaan Mysterious Terrain rules will be?

"You enter an Istvaan Mysterious Forest. Roll a D6. On a 1, the Imperator-class Titan Dies Irae is hidden there; any Loyalist Marines in the Forest die explosively. On a 2, Angron is there; any Loyalist Marines in the Forest die messily. On a 3... etc."

My notes:
1:45 -
No codex's needed, guess FW won't need to change their books every time GW makes an update. Only four playable legions, Death Guard, Emperors Children, Luna Wolves and World Eaters 9 (aww hoping for more there). Rules for the each Primarchs of four legions mentioned. Allies are available but the book mentions the Allies chart is limited because other legions have not yet been published. Six Scenarios randomly chosen similar to Eternal War Scenarios: 1.Blood Feud, 2.Fire Tide, 3.Shatter Strike, 4.Onslaught, 5.Domination and 6.Extermination. Three new deployment types Clash of the Line, Dawn of War and Search and Destroy. These sound similar to the deployments types in the 5th edition.
2:09 -
Blood Feud, reads like a Purge the Alien scenario with two twists, infantry and jump infantry count as two points and the side with most surviving units gains a one point secondary objective. Fire Tide is like a Crusade game except with players taking turns placing incendiaries that linger around and cause damage to nearby units.
2:29 -
Captain Saul Tarvitz of the Emperor's Children, I remember this guy from Horus Rising, he seemed reasonable. Looks like he sides with the Loyalists because he gains Preferred Enemy against Emperor's Children.
2:33 -
Section Leader Crysos Morturg, seems to be a Death Guard Librarian with only one power. I noticed in his list was hardened power armour, maybe power does different things now?
2:43 -
What looks like Fellblade, kinda looks like a cross between a Baneblade and Deimos Predator. Notice the quad lascannons, I wonder what the main guns can do?
3:57 -
Land Raider type + plus demolisher cannon??
4:00 -
Space Marine Jetbikes.
4:02 -
Space Marine Comms guy, what a big head.
4:04 -
Heresy Terminators, noticing the grenade launchers on the Sergeant's back and a Termie in the back featuring what looks like finger based lightening claws.

I'm actually with Eldargal here.

If you don't like Marines then this book is kind of ... well... boring.

The thing that makes 40k so cool is the variety in it, and I just see this as one big book of homogenousness.

(fwiw I do have about 12,000 points of blood angels)

I'm not quite as unimpressed as I make out.:p I think it will be a very high quality book worth getting even if Marines are getting a little dull. I just think it would have been more interesting if Marines didn't also dominate the IA books. Balance it out by a xenos centric book still told from the IoM perspective. Eldar and Necrons battling it out over an IoM world with the IoM scrambling to figure out what is going on. Or something. It's not like the IoM have to take up all the space in a book for them to sell models and put rules out.

Simple economics though, judging by the reaction over the internet and in the store, this is going to make a bucket load of cash. Hopefully in turn FW will reinvest some of that into more xeno centric books.

Not just that, but this book consists of the four most boring legions fighting themselves. I'm actually pretty disappointed by this, I better not have to buy this one to be able to use the ones that actually contain some good stuff.

To be fair, thats more or less what the last one (The Doom of Mymeara) was, I thought. I guess the narrative direction that the Forgeworld writers have gone down means that the scope for multiple xenos races in IA books and models to support them will always be limited at the expense of human/imperial stuff. Lets face it, most 40k players probably have an imperial army of some kind, with races like Eldar, Tau or Tyranids are less popular, so its probably a sound decision on Forgeworlds part to write campaign books and release models that involve the more popular armies and to write it from a human narrative - 40k gamers are all more or less human arent we, so a campaign book involving Eldar and Tau fighting a Tyranid incursion would probably not sell much because a) less people play those armies and b) players would find it hard to identify with a capricious, haughty bunch of pointy ears and blue skinned quasi-communists as 'the good guys'. I think that this is also the reason behind the relatively small amount of BL fiction written from those races perspective.

eldargal
09-15-2012, 06:06 AM
See I don't accept that logic entirely, look at WFB, while humans (Empire) are one of the top-selling armies the others are High Elves, Dark Elves and Warriors of Chaos (sort of human I admit). Over a shorter time frame since their re-release Ogre Kingdoms is doing extremely well too.I know Marines sell and I have no problem with GW meeting that demand (they would be quite wrong not to) but I do believe that has gone too far in some cases and this is particularly evident with FW. Remember my idea wasn't having the book written from the xenos perspective, it was to have a campaign where the IoM was caught in the middle and were trying to understand what was going on while vast alien armies fought around them.

Perhaps by shunting so much of the Marine centric effort into the HH series, it will free up the rest of their design team to work on more Xenos/Chaos stuff.

So you get one series of books thats all Marine and Guard vs Marine and Guard while the IA books carry on as Guard w. Marines vs Chaos/Xenos etc

Just my thoughts.

I am not the type to moan about the price of my model stuff. I usually find it fair enough and I love buying it so it gets bought. But it feels like they are just pushing the price to the max to see how far us muppets will go to get a bit of Horus Heresy loving.
I have no idea how much this stuff costs to produce, so I am not coming from a place of knowledge, but it just feels too much.
Do we know if this book is much bigger than Imperial Armour 10 say, to justify the cost?
Whatever the cost, I do know they are gonna sell a boat load.

As an aside, I ordered a tactical squad and an assault squad of the MKII 'crusade' armour today. I reckon that once the book is released, loads of people will be ordering them, and you will have to wait for ages for them to catch up with orders. Maybe on the run up to Games Day they will already be too busy to despatch orders and so I will have to wait anyway.
