Page 32 – Commissars, Summary Execution. Change the first sentence to read “If the Commissar has joined a squad chosen from Codex: Imperial Guard and it fails a Morale test, the Commissar will summarily execute the squad’s current commander – this is the Imperial Guard model in the squad with the highest Leadership value.”

So, here's the situation:

A regular IG squad is joined by a Commissar and (Battle Brother ally) Marneus Calgar.

The squad is fighting in melee, and Calgar, being a God of War chooses to fail his morale test and run away.

The Commissar shouts "YOU BLASTED COWARD! Why are we running away? You have been found wanting in the eyes of the Emperor."

... And then blows away the IG Sergeant.

This tickles me in a very wrong way :D

Imperial guard model in the squad with the highest LD?

Sounds like the commissar is branching out into suicide .

There should be a rule that doesn't allow allies to combine any units that contain Commissars. Even the lowliest Commissar would think Calgar is a coward for voluntarily retreating and put a bolter shot in his head.

Of course, the bolter shell would just bounce off, cos, y'know, Calgar ;)

I can totally see it:

"Sergeant, did you just abandon your post?"

"What? No, sir! Lord Calgar ordered us to fall back!"

"And is Lord Calgar your superior officer?"

"I - well, but commissar, sir, I mean, he's -"

"IS LORD CALGAR AN OFFICER OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD?"

"Well, not technically, but -"

"For dereliction of duty ..."

Maybe commissars need a rule that allows attached ally ICs to execute them :D

And...

I need to go buy a Marneus Calgar model. Just to use this quote in a game.

Would a commissar really want to shoot the squad sergeant when Magnus Calgar, one of the Emperor's Angels, Master of the Ultramarines, superhuman, etc...etc... calls out loud "Fall back, fall back" ?

The commissar's execution thing is a special rule, the Calgar thing is a special rule. I think special rules only apply to normal occasions (like a IG squad failing a moral check) and not when another special rule says they auto fail their check.
That's how I should play it. (It makes more sense this way :))

(The cinematic value of a commissar shooting an IG Sergeant right in front of Calgar when he says 'fall back' is absolutely fantastic)
