So, I just started playing in February and I am having trouble pulling lists together. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can best build a vanilla space marine army. If anyone could even just point out a general idea I should make a list around that would be great! Thanks in advance

do you play any other armies? is there any units you really want to use? do you know of a points limit?

Build a list in 3 stages.

First stage - What do you like most in an army? What unit is your favourite, either in game terms or just model.
Second Stage - Add to this, and make the army legal (2 troops 1 HQ)
Third Stage - Bulk out your weaknesses. Do you need more troops? Are you low on AT power? Could your shooty guys use a CC screen?

I don't have any other armies. I would like to work up to 1500 pts right now. I really like chaplains as an HQ. I also like dreds and terminators of all sorts

there is an HQ chaplain dreadnought  (can't remember if he is named) he is pretty good, I prefer BRAY'ARTH ASHMANTLE though. both are a good HQ choice.

are you planning on sticking with C:SM?

once I get near (find :o) my book I can help more.

I am planning on sticking with C: SM. I have developed a 1500 point list that I think might meet be decent. Tell me what you think

HQ:
Chaplain: Jump Pack 115

Troops:
3 Tactical Squads: Power Axe, Meltagun Multimelta, Rhino 675

Heavy:
2 Lascannon Predators 230

Fast:
Assault Squad (10): TH/SS Sarge 235

This brings me to 1255. What should I do with the remaining 245? Add another Predator, Tactical Squad, or Assault Squad? Should I take a Whirlwind, Thunderfire, Vindictor, or Devastators with missile launchers or heavy bolters to beef up my anti infantry?
Thanks in advance!

you said you like dreds so take one or if you spend the points right take 2, and with dreds you can have anti-infantry or anti-tank or something in the middle, I don't have a 6th edition rule book so I don't know if they nerfed walkers.

What if I were to add an 8 man devastator squad with 4 plasma cannons to help me deal with MEQ and then add melta bombs to my chaplain so, if the situation required, I could combat squad the assault marines and both groups could crack heavy tanks if need be? That would bring my total to 1498

I had a long reply all typed out, then I realized the title was C:SM not CSM.

No coffee = fail.

So i realized that I am woefully unequipped to deal with fliers. For this purpose I have adjusted the list as such
HQ:
Chaplain Jump Pack Meltabombs 120

Troops:
3 Tactical Squads Meltagun, Multimelta, Rhino 630

5 Scouts 75

Heavy:
2 Lascannon Predators 230

Fast:
10 Assault Marines Power Axe, Meltabombs 210

Storm Talon Twin Linked Lasconnon 150

Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line with Icarus Lascannon 85

This is 1500 on the nose and I feel it deals with everything that can be thrown at me. Thoughts everyone?

Wait I am an idiot
HQ
Chaplain, Jump Pack, Meltabombs 120

Troops
3 Tactical Squads Meltagun, Multimelta, Rhino 630

8 Boltgun Scouts 114

Heavy:
2 Lascannon Predators 330

Fast
10 Assault Marines, Meltabombs 195

Fortification
Bastion, Icarus Lascannon 110

For a total of 1499. Suggestions please?

I recommend that you get some heavy support, and ditch the Fortification, I play C:SM and Forge world variant lists all the time, i recommend using a thunderfie cannon, it has become an excellent support choice in the new edition
