Tau allies for Orks conversions WIP

I started modeling a little orkiness with a battleforce and 2 objectives:
1) Make some models that could readily "count as" normal ork units when I want to play ork-only
2) Make a sweet allied detachment to cover my anti-tank needs (ie broadsides)

The force I went with ended up being
HQ - Shas'o: TL missile pod, drone controller+2shieldDs, 2+ armor, blacksun filter, advanced stabilization
> Counts as Deffdread
Troops - 12 fire warriors+2gunDs
> Counts as Grots
Heavy - 3x Broadsides: drone controller+2shieldDs, +BS
> Counts as Killa Kans

for a total of about 550 points.
Attaching the Shas'o to the broadsides gives them slow and purposeful and night vision when needed, saving some points for the rest of the army.

The Shas'o is still early WIP, but the broadsides and firegrots are done
The suits were bulked out to make them the size of a Kan and magnetized for easy swapping to dread close combat weapon plus gun (burst cannon = big shoota pictured)

Now I'm trying to finalize my paint scheme. I wanted to use white and purple with a low-contrast white to stand out from the orkiness attached to it. For the broadsideKans, they could be obviously broadsides, or with the the arms swapped out, obviously a killa kan, with minimal "counts as" explaining or confusion (the model is about 1cm taller than a Kan, about the height of a battlesuit on a stick).

The lines are done with spacewolf grey (not sure what the current name is), with spacewolf->white for armor but I'm not sure if I want to switch to smooth solid white with black lines (as I'm not sure about the contrast from everything else).

What do you guys think? Should I change the paint scheme before I get too far along?

really like the white over the grey. the red, purple, and green really pop out against it. How does this paint scheme look when tied into your ork army? are they going to stick out like sore thumbs or will they blend in a bit?

The white definitely stands out against the rest of the army just as much as it does against the red and silver on the model itself. Ill get a pic of everything next time I play.

Just got my GW Ork barricade in the mail and, thanks to the new faq, there's no need to modify it to make a counts as aegis- the overall end-to-end length of the walls are the same and the requirement to string them all together means it really doesn't matter if the individual pieces are a little longer. Of course this meant I had to throw together a quick orky quad gun to go with it.

One more tau-ork painted this week
The quadgun was made from a paint pot and an extra sponson sprue I had lying around.

Firegrots complete; I can post individual closeups if anyone is interested. Time to get back to construction.

Started working on the deffsuit again
- Finished one of the arms and started working on the shoulder/attach-point
- Toothpick added as placeholder and size test for a dawnblade-style weapon

I think these may be the start of a renegade grots or counts-as-o'shovah army. I'm not sure if I'm going to expand this into a stand alone force or work on additional allied detachments for orks (as orkifying other armies has been pretty fun and ridiculous).

I'll take some pics of everything on a table next to the rest of my army for comparison next time I get a chance to play.

Argh... I need to add some fliers to my ork army but o don't know if I want to do some dakkajets, convert some ork-riding chaos dragons (to go with the potential chaos detachment), or wait for the rumored tau flier to tie in with the Work taught I already have. What do you guys think?

2 Close combat weapons finished. I think I'm going to make the Tau-arms dedicated close combat and snap on guns in place of the little arms when the deffsuit is running as a crisis suit.

OR should I add magnets to the tau-arms so the crisis suit weapons will attach to them like they would on a standard kit?

I really like the quad gun conversion, it's a really nice looking piece of kit.

I also like the firegrots, especially the one holding his gun above his head, it looks very realistic. Also, several of them remind me of the first ratling models GW released back in the day :)

Finally finishing up construction. The last thing I have is the sword that it's going to be holding. This detachment is eventually probably going to be a Tau army led by commander Ork'shova, so I wanted it to at least closely resemble the dawnblade. A little bit more orkification and I'll be ready to start painting!

Bwahahaha! Played my first game with 2 dakkajets on Friday (1850). Highly recommended for you Ork players out there just to experience dumping 36 Twin-linked S6 shots into something that you want gone. Does anyone have any experience squeezing a second flyer into a 1500pt list?

Sigh... a sad sad time period indeed. I sold my gargant and offered to finish painting it for free. I do enjoy painting but it's making the sale harder and harder.

My Orks and Tau-Orks are still on ebay, but my space marines, tyranids and this fella have found good homes.

3 more crisis suits and a new group shot. As I expected/feared, my little group o' allies has grown into a stand alone army and I can't stop building it up. Now I need to find someone looking to get rid of some high yield missile pods so I can make the broadsides...useful.

Sir, might I suggest you take a look at the Bandai Heavyarms Gundam kit in 1/160? The missile packs on the legs might well serve your needs... and someone of your mad skills might well find the rest useful as well...

I started working on the Ramora while hunting for bits. I couldn't think of any way to dual purpose them so they ended up just being mildly orkified. Thanks for the great missile pod source. I'll start on those next
