View Full Version : Buying for pleasure.

Afternoon.
So once again, I'd run out of Diet Coke, and had to take a quick jaunt up the road to Tesco's to resupply. And seeing as I have to walk past it, I dropped into GW for a nose about. And in doing so, a familiar itch overtook me. It was time to buy something.
But what? My armies are very nicely rounded at the moment and don't really need anything adding, but I'm not yet ready to kick off a new army project. Yet I had to have something to build, as I really enjoy assembling kits, and with GW's plastics I find this doubly so (lots of options and bits!).
Half hour of browsing and general chit chat, and I decide on a box of Wolf Guard Terminators, simply because I felt they offered exactly what I was looking for, and form an extremely entertaining project of itself. Currently still on sprue, as I try to make up my mind just what I want to equip them with. As I don't really intend to develop a Space Wolf force, it really is just a matter of the rule of cool being liberally applied.
Now, does anyone else do this? Do you set yourself a particular budget, or is it a case of anything goes? How do you make up your mind?

I bought some random bits and with those bits and the ones I had I was able to make guardsmen marbo, 3 commissars, and Iron hand for 10$, I had no clue what I would do with the bits I just ordered them so I would have something to do.

I don't go to the GW store here in San Antonio - I object to being publicly shamed - but we have several independent stores around town. Whenever I drop in I always poke my nose in the bits boxes if they have any. I look for heads, anything that could be reshaped or repurposed to dress a model up; generally the stores are very reasonable. Right now I have half a box worth of lizardmen from the fantasy line that I'm messing about with - air-dry clay to make armor and Tau weapons (minor client race, stand-as Fire Warriors) Just for the giggles and the experience, not like I need them.
Of course, with the new ally rules, I need smurfs. If this is not heresy ::grin:: how easy is it to convert, oh, say... Dark Angels to smurf-dom? Got a buddy who does CSM, and I don't think my skills are up to purifying Chaos Marines and bringing them to the light of the Greater Good...

Ah, you have to agree to accept Cookies first!
And you know what, I've enjoyed building this Terminator (first one done!) so much, I can see myself procuring multiple units of various Terminators, just because I love the models!

I do this kind of thing all the time, yesterday I walked past my local and stopped for a browse. Walked out with a Dakka Jet and some Ork Bikers. They may evolve into a army, who knows but I love the models :)

Might I suggest a beverage without aspartame?
You'll be enjoying those model purchases a lot longer. ;)
I wonder if GW pumps in high quality Oxygen to get people semi high and vulture them for purchases.

Between my smoking and drinking, that's the least of my life limiters....
As for being semi-high? Nope. I just kind of have the temerity to enjoy my hobby, and a well paid job to boot.

Diet Coke
I doubt it is possible to enjoy anything while drinking that stuff. We only use it for rust removal and for dudes in custody.

I have a hard enough time controlling my hobby spending without buying simply for pleasure. Everything has to be part of a carefully planned addition to my armies as I can't afford to buy models I'm not going to use often (and with 6 armies they don't get used enough as it). I don't set a budget as such, I just work out what my next addition will be and see if i can afford it when pay day rolls around. I like doing that, gives me something to look forward to. The problem comes when I don;t have anything else I want to add to my armies, that's usually when the plastic crack addiction gets the better of me and I buy a new army.

Done.
One is inbound to Scotslandplace. You must hunt and retrieve the cookie, then you have my permission to eat it.
Also, I wonder if DF3CT is ever NOT overly sarcastic...

I hear you good sir. I got 2 Limited Dark Vengeance... I don't even play Power Armour of any sort, all of my armies are Xenos! It truly is plastic crack.
As for models for armies I actually collect and play, I always end up getting more Tyranids on a whim, they're my first and greatest love in 40k and they always have so many excellent models with all manner of pretty options. I'm sure I'll use them all in an army at one time or another.

That's simply my opinion, but it's amazing someone pops up initially only on the GW/CHS threads almost verbatim vehemently spewing the same defences that are CHS actual defence...
or maybe I'm too suspicious...

I thought caution was suspicion.

If I have no plans to expand my army at the moment I won't even "plan" to go a GW store. There's no local store and the nearest by actually is 45 minutes or so away. So me going there actually requires me to plan going there... and as such have a plan what I actually want to go there for, since I'm a cheap ******* and I rather not even spend money to get there without a purpose.
I usually don't even visit online stores if I don't have a solid plan what I need in terms for my GW products.
That being said I usually have something on my desk to paint and keep up with that when I feel I'm running low on models... but then again, I'm not always pushing myself to get stuff done ASAP.
Weirdly enough I never, for as long as I remember, went to GW just because and bought stuff... "just because"... I always had a plan in mind what I needed, and as such I never felt bad if they don't have what I'm looking for and not buying a thing.
I'm not really the kind of customer GW wants I guess, lol...
