Cow's heresy thousand sons

Introduction

Hi there my name is Cow, I have been a reader on bols for many a year but never really posted any of my stuff, but thought it was time to do so. I am a massive chaos fan with over 30,000 points of combined daemons, CSM and traitor guard. My favourite chaos god is Tzeentch and I have had a thousand sons army for the last 10 years, but I decided for a fun project to do a heresy style thousand sons army based around the novel 'a thousand sons' and the horus heresy artwork book to try and keep as close as possible to what they are described to try and push my modelling and painting skills.

The troops

The back bone of any good army is its troops. I started by looking through the horus heresy artwork book to get ideas of how I should go about converting up the marines of my army. From first look they look very similar to the Mk III FW armour mainly due to the helmet style, but the problem that I found is that the chest detail in the pictures was very different to the Mk III armour. So I bought Mk III armour and then got the torso parts from the Mk V armour set from bits sites and then added a little green stuff scarab in the center of the chest.

At the moment I am using the army as a grey knight/space marine force, with Sevrin Loth leading and then GK strike squads and terminators as the basis of the troops. For the marines I will be converting up some scouts in the next month or so. I found some pictures of assult marines in the artwork book and the FW jetpacks look awesome so I made a unit of them aswell.

I have been building this army for the last 6 or so months, it took a long time to get all the individual bits from different companies to be able to start making some of the units. I have a thread on my gaming clubs forum where you can see how I built up the marines, if anyone is interested I can do a step by step build, or list all the parts that I used to make anything in this thread.

Terminators

I always wanted to make some scarab occult terminators as they are just awesome, so I got some of the new FW terminator armour as it looks lovely and then converted it some different shoulder pads from chapterhouse and some different arms.

I have used contemptors as my dreadnaughts as why wouldnt you? And I love that fact that the terminators look like mini contemptors.

Tzeentch is awesome, I cant wait for the prospero based heresy book from FW, it is going to be amazing. Where abouts do you live, you go to many tournaments in the south england?

I decided for my vehicles that I would go for a land raider to start with as nice to have something very heavy to go with the contemptors, but I didnt like the look of the 'normal' land raider so went for a spartan as I love the over all look and it has an assult ramp.

whats the BolSUK playdate? I got my airbrush paints so I will be spraying some basic marines from the new dark vengeance box set so hopefully well then decide or put it to a vote on Bols to which red I should use, got the choice of 6 reds as a base colour.

And yes seeing it all before wedding is fine

I am really happy that you have liked them as your models have given me lots of inspiration as they are beautiful. I have tried to make enough changes so that I havnt just copied some of your units. I am really hoping that I can paint them anywhere near the standard that your ones are.

I recognise the scribor miniatures parts, mostly shield on the tank and contemptor dreadnought. I have just placed 3 sizable order to forgeworld myself to help me complete my own pre-heresy thousand sons project. I needed to break down the order into 400 or 500 pound sterling lots in order to avoid the import tax. I did not think that heresy era weapons packs would cost so much. I also bought a few squads of heresy era troops as well as 6 rhinos, 3 landraiders, and 2 contemptors.

I might have to get a couple of the scribor Egyptian warrior models for heroes/champions, as well as some of the symbols. A good site for symbols, icons and even Egyptian hand weapons is crocodile games. I ordered a few weapons, shields and icons & artifacts from them last night. Their war banners look good and would stand out well in an Egyptian based thousand sons army. There are lots of Egyptian Hieroglyphics on their parts.

My army uses the "counts as: space marines - codex" rather than the Grey Knight theme you are using. This way I can use them as standard Vanilla Marines in games of 40K, and as thousand sons once Forge World get their new book range out for heresy era gaming.

Our 2 armies would go well together as a doubles team, fighting along side each other against the hated Space wolves.

I should have about 5000 points or more by the time I am finished building my force. Getting them out of Australia to play along side or against your army would be the hard thing. They will take up a full Battle Foam 1520 XL bag and maybe a Pack Max add on once I have added fliers.

I would like to see your colour scheme to see if it compliments my scheme I am using for my army. Have a look at my thread and see if you would be painting your army along similar lines, and we can team up as part of the final battle on Prospero.

If need be, I have 26 Sisters of Silence, 46 Adeptus Custodes, 10 Custodes Terminators, and 10 Custodes jet Bikes to add to the Enemy forces placed against us. They could use the Grey Knights and sisters of battle codexes, but I would have to put the custodes together first, as none of them were built when I bought the army deal from Ebay.

I have just finished cracking out the airbrush and used 5 different red Vallejo airbrush paints, so once I get some decent light I will get the pictures up so I can put this to a vote of which red is the best.

I love being able to use an airbrush, I cant do detail with it, but its great for doing the base colours nice and evenly.

There are about 6 Battle companies with large formations for sisters of battle, Adeptus Arbites, Imperial Guard (Vraaks), and 3 other projects I am working on, that have not even been put together yet until they reach 10 or 12 squads in size. We are crazy to collect such large forces and projects. Damn it if 40K is only 1 of 4 wargaming systems I play, and collect in great numbers.

That is a stupid amount of models, I thought I was bad enough having 35,000 points of 40k. How do you store all of that?

I have not been on for a while, as been very busy with the start of new school year as lots of planning and marking to do. I have spent the afternoon touching up some of the models with bits of greenstuff to fill in gaps.

Thanks, I was going to take my flying daemons to the next tournament but I dont want people to be complaining that im going for a internet list so going to try and get the 1k sons ready, or at least a base red colour. I have done the colour tests, so will try and take some pictures of them aswell

Loving this army, but what's the model with the two familar terminator conversions on the right? :D

Also I hope your Scibor Commander comes out better than mine did, I tried giving him all gold armour but compared to everyone else in the army it made him look rather dull. (see my log for pics)

The terminators which I have shamelessly stolen from you are awesome, but I decided to use them as my paladins as when looking through the art work only the really as few terminators where that ornate. At the moment I have only finished 2 of them and they are the body guard for my GK librarian from scibor, the only other Egyptian model that they do.

Im not a massive fan of the helmet, it fits the whole egyptian theme, but im trying to stick to the heresy art work as much as I can, but its a lovely model, so thought I would get it.

I like your mini magnus model (as I keep an eye on your work a lot, im going to have to shamelessly steal your spire guard ideas in a couple of years, as I was having the issue trying to find nice enough armour and found those other robed legs from the archers I think and they do work really well.) but I agree that the gold is a bit much compared to the rest of the army. I am just looking forward to seeing the Magnus model that FW do, as going on the angron model its going to be epic.

Hi all, it has been a long time since I got to post anything in months, so I thought I would let you know how it is all going. It is no where near the standard of proiteus' work but it will slowly improve. At the moment I have got the base colours on some of the units, as I need 3 colour standard done for a tournament next weekend.

My favourite unit and model in the army has to be the contemptors, they are lovely models, and enjoyed doing the base colours. really looking forward to finishing them off
