I like the concept of the GW battle board thing and the fact that it can be set up in a variety of different ways, but I hate the price.

My solution is to make my own board using 12" square cork tiles. They make a decent sand coloured surface as is and are easy to paint with whatever scene you require. Plus you can double your options by painting the other side with a different terrain.

The board can then be of any dimensions you like and incorporate any shape, and as its flat you get no model skid.

I have a stack of 20 painted grey with flag stone patterns and road features painted on, it makes a great base for cities of death style games. Some are even geared towards objectives (one has Aquilas painted on it).
Works for me any way

Thanks for the tip about the cork. I made modular terrain boards out of polystyrene tiles about 12 years ago and it's long since succombed to wear and tear. I was considering making new ones but dreading the mess from all those little beads of polystyrene that get everywhere when you cut the stuff. I hadn't thought of cork!

I expanded my Realm of Battle using 4"x8"x9mm MDF sheets cut into MDF squares. I now have enough for a 14x6" table.

Ends up costing about $40aud for the board and paint (More for the flocked sections). Looking to add another 10ft to the table, making desert and city sections.
