View Full Version : Tyranid Quad gun and Aegis Defence Line
Super excited to start work on my Tyranid Aegis Defence line and Quad Gun, but before folk point out that Tyranids can't man the gun thanks to the FAQ I'll refer you to this post on synaps3 (http://synaps3.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/1850pts-food-for-thought-and-noming.html) which points out that
"Emplaced weapons" (p96) are weapons attached to buildings. Aegis defense line is battlefield debris (not a building)(p105) and the quad gun is a "gun emplacement" which has different rules (p105). RAW for now is that we can fire guns on a defense line.
So unless the future full game FAQs it out of existence for gribblies I'll foolishly make the effort to build the quad gun, although the Aegis will still be of use. So up first is some initial pics of the bits will constitute the gun:
I got five 50mm bases off ebay and I'll be using a plastic Bucks Fizz cork as the base for the weapon.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c0YnUzhBOL8/UBwkV2r432I/AAAAAAAADuI/-P-8VquJn8Q/s320/13440215132210.jpg
The weapon itself will be based on the Acid Spray gun for the Tyrannofex, handily free with my Tervigon kit.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9rUfvQL88FM/UBwkivl-BvI/AAAAAAAADuQ/90h5p0GfYPg/s320/13440215619191.jpg
Having curved the arm to try and match the curve on the plastic cork with my Dremmel-alike I drilled a hole to pin the gun to the cork with flower arranging wire.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JtrleSmSeB4/UBwkqBzZe1I/AAAAAAAADuY/tR1LedGZGXQ/s320/13440216193442.jpg
I then removed the back of the arm and mounted half a Carnifex head on top of the Acid Spray gun so that it has a limited sentience that other Tyranid organism can interface with to fire the gun - you wouldn't believe how many folk think because nids don't have opposable thumbs they can't use tools, this way it's not an issue.

Next up will be an update in a few days with the Aegis, but I'll be utilising Mr_Pink's terrain posts on Warpshadow (http://www.warpshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=7284) as inspiration. I would not have thought to use Orange fruit cups. great work, really great work
Ahead of my actual post on the blog here's where I'm at:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Ceu0Ne21lkg/UCGcDArH6vI/AAAAAAAADzs/whX7k1HhxYE/s720/05-P1060031.JPG
I used an actual Aegis to get roughly the same footprint then cut the tubs to fit. You can get roughly 3 single panels from each pot. Handily mine came with 18 ridges in the base so I could split it into thirds no problem. The the bit that you cut off makes a perfect join for the double panels. I used staples to hold them in place. next up Milliput.
Next up on my Tyranid Aegis - some Milliput:

Much in the same way I did with my Mycetic Spore, (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/nids-part-27-diy-mycetic-spore-pt5.html) you can see below where around a third of my 4oz Milliput supply went.

Which eventually became this:

And some Tyranid Warrior - Hive Guard conversions (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/nids-part-42-tyranid-warrior-to-hive.html) manning the defences

More pics and tips on my blog. (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/nids-part-50-terrain-is-everything.html)
I think these look great, always nice to see some love for the nids. Keep the good work up

These look really sweet. Definitely looking forward to all the Xenos fortifications 6th edition will undoubtedly bring about. Have any plans for larger fortifications?
I want to do a Tyranid Bastion and a Skyshield just to play around. I've been making my own home-made buildings since I got back into 40k two years ago: (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/terrain-is-everything-standard-template.html)
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dZ-GLhcvuoQ/TNlZlOCANYI/AAAAAAAAANg/sXBTG5UdSIk/s1600/hills9.jpg
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xLqgFP3xjAw/TjZJvAoiKGI/AAAAAAAAA9U/aGbO9gnH9C8/s320/13121806595821.jpg
But because I've made so much there isn't really much point to making any more as I don't have a huge amount of room to store it. Which is unfortunate as I prefer to give the free .pdfs out after I've made one and tweaked my template, so any problems I discover during the process doesn't carry forwards to folks efforts using my templates.
I also need to do this:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Q-PuSGjFHvY/SJ4FEGxGU4I/AAAAAAAABXw/okVqTx14ZR8/s640/Ferdinand_Marcos.jpg
to this:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yHpJ1L_34Kk/TvsfqLBGqbI/AAAAAAAABb8/IomvecqQng8/s320/Head-%25281%2529.jpg
In a semi-Prometheus giant head thing, I suppose I could rig it to be like a bastion...
The other problem is Tyranid terrain doesn't really work too well for sharing with folk. Sure it looks pretty and you get a step-by-step guide on how to make it, but it's not quite the same as a .pdf that you can cut out and stick together with basic building skills.
And some backs to the Aegis have been sculpted:

i have an easy way to do the head.
mask off where you want to keep detail, then score about 5mm in where you want empty space.
drill a hole in the middle then add super glue :) it should melt naturally as if acid has eaten it perfect for tyranids.
the scores should prevent the super glue crossing over to the bits you want, just do it in stages as it will stink releasing cyanide gas..... good for a sick day though LOL and also may clear any nasal congestion
Still no clarification in the 'nids using quad defence line guns in the FAQ but it did state defence lines are all one piece which is a bit annoying. i liked the idea of spreading them out two pieces at a time, that says 'battlefield debris to me'. you're not always going to find one single unbroken defensive line now are you? Anyway, latest update on the quad gun, it's built with some Milliput detail added but most of the Chitinous plates and things that will make it Tyraniddy still to come [more detail on the blog (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/nids-part-52-terrain-is-everything.html)]:

This is a wonderful series of projects. You are the first example of mycetic spores I've seen which are incorporate large ripper tentacles, as I put on mine! Everything is looking great, and as a big bug player, I'm going to keep my eyes on this thread =)

Cheers, although mine only has 5 tentacles when there should be 6! One got shot off ;)
latest update on the defence line and they are finished construction and ready for painting:

Also of note is that despite GW not making it Magenta to represent a change in the FAQ the Tyranid gun emplacement rule was clarified[ish]
Q: Are Tyranid units inside buildings (i.e. the Bastion) subject to
instinctive behaviour tests? Furthermore, are they able to manual fire
emplaced weapons or weapon emplacements?
A: No to both questions.
So only autofire. Now, according to the previous argument Defence Line guns don't get the autofire rule, they're only really mentioned in the buildings section. So this currently feels like a total waste of time on the quad gun. However, my buddies spoke to the Warhammer World events team today and asked about it and they said they that it could autofire, which isn't so bad given it's twin linked but I still feel shady about using it in the October Throne of Skulls tournament. Last thing I want is to argue the toss over it and have to produce a couple of tournament lists just in case.

I get the auto fire intuition - you paid points for it, back in Planetstrike they could auto fire - but I really see no rules argument for it. A quad gun is battlefield debris according to page 114, not an occupied building. Even bastions don't get auto fire unless there's somebody inside them.

Well obviously I can't speak for everyone but if you get me at the tournament, I'd happily let you use this (and with manual fire given the effort involved). The rule is obviously intended to stop the slightly silly sight of an army of tyranids with a manned imperial defence line or bastion which doesn't make sense. Send them an email with photos and I think they are more likely to say yes. Use it as a counts as hive guard otherwise ;)

Once it's complete I'll send the pics as you suggest and see what they say. Good idea about the Hive Guard, I have a spare one so I can always swap them out. It's not the cool solution but it's better than nothing. Do I take it you will be attending Throne of Skull in October and if so will it be with the Mechanicrons? Cool to see them if you are.
Meanwhile as construction is complete I've started to paint the quad gun. A bit of colour starts to differentiate what's going on:

I'll be there but I like to mix up my armies so it might be my Dark Eldar/Eldar instead. I'm working on some xenos terrain myself and want to give my DE bastion a go.
