The Hallelujah song on the Shrek soundtrack, whoever that singer is.

The death of Optimus song isn't sad to me.

Well, except in a lame 80s metal sad way. Like the rest of that cartoon movie soundtrack.

I must not be of the same generation as Mr Mystery. Then again, I was playing with Star wars figures as a kid and Lego, not Transformers - and by the time that cartoon was on tv, I'd switched to electronics and model making (the star wars figures are still in a box somewhere after getting my first computer.

I have a peculiar hearing issue in that voices of a certain pitch (or just autotune's default pitch) just give me a headache - and Jeff Buckley is no different to Ke$ha in that area.

stupid stupid "Arms of the Angels"

I blame all those SPCA commercials.

(warning: personal backstory coming up) and I remember it was in rotation during the summer my dad died, a friend's son died, another's dad died... (crappy year that one)

September (http://www.amazon.com/Ep-Collection-1-2-Cranes/dp/B000003RSM/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_4) by the Cranes (2nd song, 2nd disc)

Truthfully most of their music is depressing as hell... but I love it.

Saddest song ever?

Johnny Cash's cover of NiN's "Hurt."

That is soul-destroying pain right there.

Listening to that you knew he wasn't long for the world, with June Carter no longer by his side...

I agree with this one too...

I actually like his cover of "Hurt" better than the original song for just that reason... you can feel his pain.

My first reaction to hearing Johnny Cash's versions was honestly: "Wow. I didn't know Nine Inch Nails had covered Johnny Cash." It was so good, I legitimately believed that it was the original version. Frankly, it's so good, it might as well be, and I'm a NIN fan.

Songs that I find sad:

Madame De Pompadour (Doctor Who OST) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACz-gFib8zo

Nelly Furtado - All good things (Come to an end).

Lyric sample:

Dogs were whistling a new tune
Barking at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon
So that they could die.

WTF?! Poor doggies!

Maybe not sad, but suicide inducingly depressing without being goth or emo? hell yes. Nothing hits rock-bottom Despair like the Swans. So awesome.

Let's face it, suicide isn't cool.

He didn't even come to talk to me about it.

What about Skinny Puppy's classic "Worlock" ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDEhCm0pxCo

I love how it is a mix of robotic, harsh and cold elements with a dramatic, human, sad and emotional chorus. Truly one of those classic songs that go beyond being just music.

The saddest song I've ever heard was, oddly enough, the dango song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvzCmV3_12c). Not because it's a sad song in and of itself, but because it's the ending credits to Clannad and Clannad After Story. Anyone who's seen the entirety of those anime will understand.
