So it's all got a bit tense around here recently, so time for a chit chat thread!
Theory is dead easy. Pick a type of troop, including those used on the Internet (so Troops Infantry, MEQ Troops, Horde Troops etc) and nominate which unit you feel is the stand out example.
Here's a couple of examples to start you off.....
Category - MEQ Infantry in Troops.
For me, is has to be Necron Immortals. Thanks to Reanimation Protocols, tougher to shift than Marines. Good stats across the board, and only really lacking in the I department. And of course, if that wasn't enough, they have some of the best basic weapons in the game. Gauss Blasters are horrible against most targets, and Tesla of course does nasty things to horde units. Topped off, they are incredibly reasonably priced. Sure, they don't have assault grenades, but when your I2 anyway, I don't feel that's much of a drawback!
Category - Shock Infantry
Space Marine Assault Terminators. Just...just horrible in 6th Edition. Terminator Armour speaks for itself, but Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield units are just horrendous. 3+ Invulnerable Save is of course awesome, and Thunder Hammers will see you through any combat, no matter what it is that's trying to drop you. Main downside of course is that they tend to be slow moving. But with a timely deepstrike, they can arrive, batter a scoring unit on an enemy objective, and then play denial. Sure, there are tougher units out there, but they tend to be significantly more expensive, and rarely have the Invulnerable save to match. Assault Terminators can swing the game on their own, and their cost dosn't require the rest of the army to be built around them!
Right, everyone join in!
Edit - Also feel free to mention combo units, such as an given unit in a transport. This particular example would be two categories - Dedicated Transport, and other Transport...

Category: most underused, but useful unit! (oh dear this is going to get a debate going :P)
wraithguard, the full 10 man shazing, with warlocks and farseer!
why?
well lets look at it this way: they kill infantry AND MC's on a 2+. think about it. dragio and 5 paladins pop up next to your fragile units? (aided by the farseer) BAM dead. and if that doesn't work they cannons are assault weapons so these s5 squad (20 attacks on the charge + the warlock's/farseer's spells)? frankly thats great in CC, almost equal to LC termi's.
as for taking damage youve got fortune on the farseer, the warlocks cover spell (5+) and T6. lasguns are almost ineffective and a bolter is as likely to take down a rhino as a wraithguard.
expensive but especially in smaller games or VS short range or CC armies they are devastating!
Category: MEQ infantry:
warp spiders! expensive? yes but like battlesuits if you use the assault jump ability you can effectively stay out of enemy fire, or move a startling 18" (or if running is still in possibly 24" ive not read much of the 6th ed rules) and with a 3+ save, and S6 guns these are perfect for harassing the enemy and popping transports whilst warwalkers, support platforms and fire prisms wreck havoc from afar (and draw attention from the spiders)
best combo unit:
mordak+librarian+ servoskulls+LR full of paladins.
warp mordak+libby in turn 1 (on the skull no scatter) warp the LRR to the libby (with a psy power) and disembark paladins (with falchions)
and now you have a full squad of paladins ready to assault, and a LR RIGHT in your opponents deployment zone!

Category: Ultimate Deathstar
Driago
Librarian
Techmarine with grenades
10 Paladins (Stave, Banner, Hammers and Halberds, Psycannons)
Literally nothing can beat it in CC for an equal points cost, except maybe THSS Terminators (but you can't deliver those Terminators without them getting shot to death first). It's Fearless, you can't budge it, you can't afford to get close to it. You just have to hope you can shoot it to death or outmaneuver it. Hope you aren't playing The Relic.

Category - Horde Infantry. Nomination - Ork Shootas.
Essentially, everything you could possibly want in a horde unit, but with the added bonus of excellent Ld (Fearless when it counts!) loads of Dakka (BS is less of an issue with that many shots) and of course dangerous in HTH. Plenty of attacks, and quite capable of denting any squad in the game. Best of all? Nice and cheap!! To my mind an almost compulsory Orky option!

Category - Most Underrated Unit
10 Man Devastator squad/four plasma cannon, and attached tech priest with signum (can you still do that?)
I just want to set the world on fire, plasma fire with a handy re-roll for those overheats and a bullet shield of battle brothers...

Wait, what codex are you reading?
My copy of C:SM says the Dev sergeant has a signum, and no techmarine can get one.

Huh. I thought the signum was introduced in the C:SM for 5th ed. Shows what I know.
Wait, you do mean the thingy that the sergeant/whatever can use to improve the shooting for one guy in his squad.

The last time I used one it was described as an targeting/sensor system that a techmarine had access to, and let him, or a squad he was attached to re-roll a single dice per turn of shooting I think...

Sounds like the same thing.
You know the plastic Devastator box? The big boxy thing that sticks out the top of the sergeants backpack is the signum -- I assume at least, the box was actually released before the codex that gave the Segeant the signum, but it makes sense.

Horde Unit:
30 Man Death Company with Lamertes
All tooled up with power weapons, power fists, thunder hammers, various pistols, jump packs to works.
With it so large, the rage shouldn't be too much of an issue, with it being large enough to take out most things.
Cons: Crazy Expensive....

I was trying to think what the most expensive army you could make within a FOC, and astrorath with 6x30 man DC must be up there
Psychosplodge
08-17-2012, 02:32 AM
plus a chapter master with a fully tooled up command squad? 3xten terminator squads?
Wolfshade

I think a tooled up Saguinary Guard would be more expensive then that

Take 10 regular Terminators, give 2 Assault Cannons.
A 630 point unit of gung-ho man-tanks.

It counts as 22 models, the Spartan only has 20 capacity, remember that Terminators take up 2 slots. Or do they not in the Spartan?

It says 25 thats 12 termies...
Due to high demand there may be a delay in the despatch of the Spartan Assault Tank. we recommend ordering the Spartan Assault Tank separately from any other items you wish to order.
An armoured transport of truly massive proportions, the Spartan is a heavy assault tank previously all but unknown outside of the revered Space Marine Chapters and the secretive Adeptus Mechanicus. The Spartan is a huge armoured conveyer whose purpose is to carry a large body of troops into the very heart of an enemy’s battle lines, weathering weapons fire that would be the death of any lesser vehicle.
Its design bears clear connections with that of the mighty Land Raider, and its genius is such that the greater proportion of its interior space is given over to a transport capacity greater than any other Imperial vehicle save the super-heavy Gorgons – being capable of carrying twenty-five power armoured Space Marines into battle. It is, however, considerably faster on the battlefield thanks to potent reactor-driven motive drives, and it boasts an equally potent armament in the form of sponson-mounted quad lascannon batteries and secondary heavy bolters.
The Spartan can also be upgraded with our range of Land Raider doors.
The Spartan Assault Tank, model designed by Phil Stutcinskas, is an enormous multi-part resin kit that features a detailed interior. Experimental rules to allow this armoured behemoth to be fielded in 6th Edition games of Warhammer 40,000 are available to download here.
Check out a video of the Spartan on our Youtube Channel.

Quick comment to making the most expensive unit. Nothing says your DC unit has to fit in the transport they buy. So you could buy a 30man DC unit with duel thuinder hammers a reclusiarch and a land raider. But with 30 guys, you might as well pay 15pts a piece for your jump packs for an astonishing350pts for a 6" range increase. Somewhere on BOLS there was an article where people tried to build the most expensive army pts-wise that would fit in one FOC. BA won over guard, but just barely. This was without Forgeworld. I think it was BOLS, it might have been 3++.
