Forgeworld? Or do you mean the odds and sods spread out amongst the plastic kits?
If you're after only a few bits, but lots of them, may be worth investigating the Ebay market, see how much they go for, and how often they sell. Compare the 2nd hand costs with procuring the first hand Forgeworld, and flogging on the bits you don't use?

Five complete sets of armour - with a bit of ingenuity, you can make them go pretty far by mixing them in with plastic pieces. They are very nice sculpts and well worth the outlay, in my opinion.
The Black Templar and Blood Angel sprues also contain some Mk3 and Mk4-esque pieces, and the missile launcher marine from Assault on Black Reach is wearing a mk5 helmet.

Seriously, look into the Bitz Market and compare the costs. It's entirely possible that Forgeworld may work out cheaper.

He means the market overall. Compare the prices of getting all the older armour mark pieces that you want by buying bitz from retailers that sell pieces cut from plastic sprues, vs. buying a few marks of armour from FW.
A lot of the time, particularly with the stuff they've done over the past year or two, Forge World kits are actually nowhere near as expensive as they first seem.

all in all it actually looks like FW has the cheapest models

Well there you go. :)
Good thing is by mixing with plastic kits you can really maximize one of those 5-man squads and spread the bitz out over quite a few minis.
Unless you're planning to make full units with a particular mark of armour?
Either way, at least now you know how to go about it.

The FW kits are worth it as long as you have plastic bits to mix with them and a modicum of conversion ability. I love them. Haven't bought a plastic kit in a long time.
Other than that...check out thewarstore.com if you're in the US. They have pretty much any marine bit you would need. It's already been said, but Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templar, and Dark Angels kits have scattered older Mark pieces in them. BA/DA/BT have older helms. BA/SWs have older legs and torsos.

Yup.
If you want to build preheresy stuff, or units of earlier marks of armour, be prepared to pay through the nose for it, because there's no real way to do it on the cheap. Aside from a truly heroic amount of conversion work and sculpting.

***Whatever you do, DO NOT buy your models from ebay sellers promising you forgeworld items new in the package. There are a few sellers on there selling items that they are making themselves and picturing FW models off it's website. I just ordered 5 MK2 assault marines and they are total crap. Not resin, way brittle, won't stay glued, total junk. Seller was "Forgeworldusa". I'd suggest going thru Forgeworld directly.
