Do the infantry platoons have to stay with the command or platoon squad. If so, what happens if that commanding squad die?

They don't have to stay with them at all, you just want to so that the Command Squad can issue it Orders, which it will lose access to if the Command Squad dies.

(unless they're in range of the Company Command Squad)
