Hi all,
It's about time I started a new blog, the last one tailed off a bit and got a bit big and unwieldy. If you've not seen it tho please give it a look, there's a lot of pics of cool stuff there if I do say so myself!
But, onwards and upwards.
I have recently bought a greater brass scorpion and a warhound titan. These will be my next 2 models to build and paint, or at least that's the plan.
However I have a couple of models to finish first, namely a stormtalon and a captain. Both are nearly done, the stormtalon needing just the base finishing.
So I thought id show the talon off first.

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x62/sprugly/IMAG0324.jpg
As you can see I've lengthened the tail and fitted the assault cannons right up in the body of the thing. Looks much more streamlined like this and not so stubby! The weapon pods are also magnetized so I can swap them out between games.
Cheers all, hope you like it.

Hi all,
First up today I have taken a couple of better pics of the talon, including the now finished base.

But that's nothing really new, what I have got is my new marine captain. Ryu Son, captain if the scarlet dragons 3rd company, with magnetized jump pack and backpack!

The idea being that I can use him as a normal captain with jump pack or use him as a korroso khan proxy if I fancy for a change
.
Next up, will be the brass scorpion. He's had his bath and is ready to be built, though I snapped a couple of bits doing it! So much for the resin bending easily in warm water!

Yeh, the term 'warm is fairly ambiguous. If the water is warm enough to scald your fingers, then the resin will bend easilly :P Even then you want to give it a good few moments to let the bit warm through to the core to be pliable, and you'll need to dump it into cold water quickly once you've bent it to the shape you want/it should be to stop it slowly curling back!
The Captain looks fairly good, though the lack of decoration on the shoulder pads is a little dissappointing, especially with the quality of the work on the sword and shield.
sprugly
08-14-2012, 02:35 PM
You know what, you're right about the pads. I've been so eager to get to the scorpion I forgot all about them, not even putting on the dragon symbol. It's something ill have to go back and do, they can't stay that bare can they! Lol
Also, thanks for the tips on resin work, the biggest resin kit I've done so far was the contemptor. The other thing I was thinking about is glue for the beast, would superglue be enough or do you recommend anything else?
Sprugly
Toaster36
08-14-2012, 07:43 PM
Superglue? Probably will be enough.
...Unless you plan on playing with it, then I'd recommend pins, plenty of pins.
SotonShades
08-15-2012, 03:09 AM
As Toaster said, superglue could be enough. If you can get nice, neat close joins with no gaps (not easy on a lot of FW models, especially of this size and complexity) and then rough them up slightly with a knife or file to give the glue more surface area to adhere and bond to, then yes it will work. I'ts been absolutely fin on my Thunderbolt, Minotaur and Macharius Vulcan (the latter being refurbished after someone else had bought it, put it together badle and it had started falling apart because they had left huge gaps around the glue.) If done properly, the glue join will actually be stronger than the resin, so your model should never actually break on the joins between componants. Unfortunately, that can have other, less desirable ramifications.
If you do have gaps, filling them properly with green stuff (or your modelling putty of choice) will massively help reduce the stress on the join, which will make it less likely to snap. So filling the gaps isn't just to make the model look nicer!
Toaster probably has the best solution though. Pinning really can ensure a good, solid join that will be survavable, especially against shear forces (usually the ones applied when big modells get transported, or when the joint is at an unusual angle relative to the way the load is transfered across it) which are more often than not the cause of breakages.
Combine all three (close-roughed joins, green stuff and pinning) should give you a model that won't break, barring abuse. Afterall, dropping anything off the top shelf of a display cabinet will generally snap something. Just ask my Thunderbolt; that has bounced down the stairs more times than any FW model ever deserves too. So far it has never broken at a componant joint though...

Small update on the scorpion, I've been preparing all the bits and have started assembly. I also have a 9.5" round wooden chopping board that I'm going to use as a base for it. I'm going to pin all the legs for strength, which is a pain but I don't want it falling apart when I use it.

The legs are on and it seems quite sturdy. Not entirely sure how I'm gonna pose the claws yet. But after that and a little tidying up of mould lines I'd missed it'll be time to start painting.

It's looking really good! A lot bigger than I thought it would be (thanks for the scale marine). Glad you took my advice and decided to pin. It'll be worth it, especially now that I can see how those leg joints work.
sprugly
08-25-2012, 03:14 PM
Yeah he's a beast, the marine will actually slide under the body of the thing the way I've posed him. He fits on the 9:5" base pretty well but you could make him lower and wider if you wanted.
I've pinned the ball joints that join the legs to the body. The "knee" joints kinda slot in but its not tight once its in there so I glued them in tight to one side and then slotted and glued in a horseshoe shape of plasticard the other to make the join tight. I'm hoping this "tightness" will be enough to keep them stuck. They seem pretty solid but I don't want to push it too hard lol.

Hi,
So work continues on the scorpion, and I've been wondering what I'm gonna do on the armour plates. It'll probably be either the Smokey mottled pattern like the forgeworld one or maybe a cracked lava kinda pattern.
I'd welcome others input on that to be honest.
Now for pics, I've started reblacking the pipes in the body, just the arms and legs to finish, and I've nearly done his base now.

Small update on the scorpion. The shading and everything has been finished on the red plates and most of the metal has been highlighted. Got some brass and the bodies tangled in the cables to do next, then I think it'll be on to the patterns on the armour plates.

Scorpion update!
The base was made from a wooden chopping board with platicard and gravely bits. I hope the following pictures will show the shading on the plates a little better to. I can get better picture with a bit of messing but the wip ones are normally just snapped at the table.
I've finished the metal parts including adding some actual brass to the scorpion. The bodies in the workings are just about done I think and I've had a first go at the magma scale pattern that I've totally copied from magmatrax (which is one of the best models I've ever seen, check it out if you've never seen it! http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=105449)

would you care to share your method on doing them scales, i think they are absolutely awesome!
sprugly
10-25-2012, 02:14 AM
Cheers, of course I'll share! They're not really too hard, just time consuming.
I paint out athe overall pattern with khorne red, it doesn't matter at this point if the lines are a little thick. Then go over the whole pattern with mephiston red trying to keep the lines a little thinner and not going all the way to the ends of the cracks near the edges. I then go over again with blood red, keeping the lines thin.
Next up is the old blazing orange (or any redish orange colour) with this coat I map out where the hot spots are going to be, normally at the junctions of the lines and more nearer the centre of the plate.
Then very small watered down lines of the old fiery orange, I keep these ones pretty small on all but the hottest bits.
The bits near the middle then get a spot of sunburst yellow, and the really really hottest parts might get a tiny spot of white, but I've tended to only do that in the very centre of the largest plates I've done.
Hope that helps!

I've been working on the forge/maulerfiend, working out how I'm gonna magnetize the beast so I cam use all the possible option from the kit. Here's the progress so far. I've now sorted the gun arms on the one side, basically all the other arms and legs and things will be magnetized the same way.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x62/sprugly/IMAG0512.jpg
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x62/sprugly/IMAG0513.jpg
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x62/sprugly/IMAG0514.jpg
I've basically cut down the ball joint and put 2 of the magnets on the flat that's left. I've then rebuilt the ball with green stuff.
On the other side I've cut a hole in the socket from the back and file the back of the hole to give me a flat bit to which I've glued a little square of plasticard which in turn has the magnets glued to it. I've had to use 2 magnets each side to make it strong enought to reliably hold the arm on.
Comments and questions always welcome.
Cheers

@heretic marine, when people refer to free hand on models they are normally talking about additional patterns or images painted onto flat areas of models, thing not defined by the shape already there. In this case they're talking about the cracked magma effect I've been using which is just painted straight onto the open areas of the model.
As it happens I have some photos of another model I painted a while ago with probably the most.impressive free hand I've done. Unfortunately the pics are probably not the best. This model was painted for a friends crusade knight themed terminator army.
