challenges in the assault sub phase

So when does Cleansing Flame happen, is it before the challenge or after! They both say at the beginning of the sub phase. We played it as who's turn it was either did the spell or challenge first. My turn I cast then challenged, opponents turn challenge and no cleansing flame on the character who challenged.

According to the Cleansing Flame rule, it says it can be used in either players turn after assault moves have been made, but before blows have been struck. The way I read it, you use it before anyone starts to hit rolls on initiative.

That's correct. It's after you've completed the assaulter's charge move, but before you go to I10.

Cleansing Flame isn't a regular attack. You just cause wounds on the enemy unit, challenge or no. Challenges don't conflict with how Cleansing Flame works at all.
