technically...no. Which does sound weird now that I say that.

The 2 differences compared to 5th is that now you do not roll to see your opponent. You never see past 36" and you always see up till 36" with modifiers to cover saves. Search lights simply remove the cover save effects caused by night fighting.

So to answer your question more directly, it's range is 36" and always works.
