So, I have just started a project to get my army ready for 6th. This is the first of a series of project posts to help keep me motivated and on track.

With the new Starter Set for 6e on the horizon I recently decided to get my army finally painted, and I chose to do my loyalist Marines as Dark Angels. The first part of this project is to complete the Command Squad for the army. Right now I have just started building and will hopefully get primed this weekend and start painting next week.

Here is the Captain Tenniel, his command squad and transport

cool man, once you have these guys painted, are you thinking of adding some ravenwing?

the ravenwing box has LOADS of bits for your DA, as well as the cool bikes and a landspeeder.

Eventually. I'm a bit strapped for cash ATM, so I am making do with models and bits I already have on hand. The captain, his command squad and a Chaplain (not posted yet) were all made from two of the DA upgrade sprues a friend gave me for some work I had done for him. I've got 3 more robed Marines to assemble to act as Veteran Sergeants for the already assembled Tactical squads.

You can see more of what I've done already on my blog

I've also assembled a Chaplain

Right now it is just the standard powermaul. Should I chop the end off and add something more Crozius?

Wow, looking good so far. Love the Chaplain. I'm a big Dark Angles fan, so I'll be keeping an eye on this.

chaplain looks great, cant wait to see some piant :)

yeah i know the ££$$ issues with building an army.... even worse a themed army :) (my blood angels are pretty much only using MK IV and the death comp bits, its fun but challenging on a budget)

I spent the last of my expendable cash getting a can of the Army Painter Angel Green primer and the matching Warpaint Angel Green. This will be my base. I've got Warpaint Greenskin to use as drybrush highlights. I'll probably then give it a Thraka Green wash to finish it. We'll see. I am hoping to have some color down this weekend and have the captain and command squad finished by next weekend.

Thanks for the comments on the Chaplain. Thoughts on his maul? Should I leave it as a maul or make it more into a proper Crozius? I kind of like the more simple look of the Maul, but I dont know if it stands out enough to be recognizable as a Chaplain.

if the maul is bugging you then just chop one of the banner finials off and use that instead of the club head, im sure the DA vets have a few angel finials in the box and the command box has a great eagle finial that i have used on my BA chaplains crozius..... actually using the DA maul :) ill snap a quick pic so you can see what i mean

since the chappie will be black, the armour should make him stand out a little more, you have given him the skull pack so that will add to the vibe, as well as the censers and rosarius on his waist.

It doesnt bother me, like I said I like the simpler look of the Maul. I have some finials, I just didnt really like the look as it makes the weapon excessively long... I think I will add some more purity seals to him however.

I've decided that the Mauls and the Skull backpack will only ever be used for Chaplains. That should also make them stand out more.

Thanks for the comments, helping me work through this makes me feel better about my decisions. Which I definitely need!

yeah, the good thing with this community is the great support for brainstorming and soundboarding.

its nice to just throw ideas out there and see what peoples reactions are. its good that you are sticking to your plans though. you feel it suits your model and thats the way it should be.

here is a pic of my chaplain and his crozius, still WIP

im probably gonna put more seals and blood pendants on the crozius and he needs a rosarius on his belt also.... as well as his head finished and loads of other stuff :)

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the maul. I tend to like simple.

It is a nice conversion! BA got some really nice model kits this time around! Yet more reasons to love plastics!

I only hope Dark Angels get some new toys too!

One of the things I love about this hobby is the building of the miniatures. It's probably my favorite part! I really enjoy making my own heroes and such.

To be honest, the modelling phase is right up there with the playing and or painting. I get itchy fingers if I have not assembled a model after a while. All of the pics in this thread look pretty sweet to me. I am going to be building a wee Dark Angel force to ally with my Sisters. I plan to make sure no two models are the same.

I plan to make sure no two models are the same.

that is normally something I aim for as well though it is hard sometimes with rank and file troops. A lot of my tactical marines look a like, but that cant be helped to much. I still try to make them unique in some way.

You can see that somewhat in my blog post from a while ago

http://allyourswords.blogspot.com/2011/07/space-marines.html

I'll be taking better pictures once I get started on the Tactical Squads.

No Pictures yet, but a bit of an update.

Using the Army Painter Angel Green Primer I primed the Command Squad, Captain and Chaplain. I will start painting after they've dried at least 12 hours.

I must say, that Army Painter color primer is nice stuff. Probably the best primer I've ever used. Nice smooth, even coverage. Well worth the cost IMO

I also made some changes to the Captain and Chaplain. Once I have access to a camera again, I'll take some pictures. They'll be painted by then! This weekend will be a painting weekend! YAY!

The robed head or the new skull helmet I put on it instead?

The robed head is one of the ones on the DA Vet sprue.

the skull helm that I've put on it but yet no picture of, is from the old chaos vehicle upgrade sprue.

I don't see the robed head you had on it before but I do clearly see the chaplain with the skull head. I like this model so much that I went and bought my own to do! Sorry!

With the death of my father in August, just about everything ground to a halt... Modeling and painting went on hold for quite some time. I did recently restart this project with new additions from Dark Vengeance. Here is where I am so far.

I'm adding a bit of variation between squads. Simple arm swaps really make a big difference. These are still WIP, I'm not done cleaning mold lines or drilling barrels. Pictures arent the best, I am still trying to make a light box.

Standard Sergeant is on the left, Conversion is on the right

the assault cannon re-position is great, looks much better than the standard one.

YourSwordisMine
10-27-2012, 04:22 AM
It's actually an arm replacement. ITs the Assault Cannon Arm from the DA upgrade sprue.

The Altered Sergeant is also sporting an arm from the Upgrade sprue. There was quite a bit more work there to get it to fit properly. I had to do quite a bit of carving of that side of the body for the arm to fit in that position, even then I had to use plastic glue (the welding kind) to get it to stay in place and to cover any major gaps... I normally dont permanently glue arms on until after its painted... but didnt have much choice with this. It came out surprisingly well though.

And yes, I still have to drill out barrels... I just dont know what size bit to use...

YourSwordisMine
10-27-2012, 04:37 AM
Oh, I forgot to mention, as of last night... I now have 2 more DV Tactical Squads, 1 more Terminator Squad and another Bike Squad...

So this brings me to a total of Dark Vengeance models to:

3 Captains
3 Librarians
2 Limited Edition Chaplains
6x Tactical Squads
3 Terminator Squads
3 Bike Squads (5 man each)

I will be using one of the librarians and Chaplains for conversions. I'll probably make Biker versions of them. That wont happen for a while unfortunately if the rumors are true about the DA codex not until April now... Dont want to use them up in conversions that wont be usable in the new dex...

oh yeah, now its pointed out i can see its not the same gun LOL
still a great littele conversion.

you are mustering quite the force there, you just need one of those cool deimos pattern predators (plas executioner) from FW and you are set LOL.

i really like the look of that paint too, i have just sprayed my 1st assault squad for my BA (yeah i know its taken ages) with AP dragon red and its great :) i may get the bone one for when i do white models (i have a mentor legion plan in the works so YAY)

I'm really liking the Army Painter paints on the whole. Now that the colored primers are matched perfectly with the Warpaints, it really makes painting a lot quicker (for me at least). My Greenwing will all be painted using the AP Angel Green primer base, Angel Green Warpaint followed with Greenskin highlights.

I like the Warpaints a lot. So much so, I just bought the line.

i am doing the same this next week :)

i was sceptical of the spray at first, but i love it now i have used it. and the brushes look really nice (a lad in my local GW uses them, i was impressed).

the angel green will be bought for my small DA force (its my daughters really, she's only 5 weeks old :)) since i canibalised my old DA for bits for my BA. and i'll probably use it for my mentor legion vehicles as they are mostly green (from the old artwork).

I havent made a post in some time. Been dealing with a lot of issues with the loss of my father back in August. To compound things, my mother has developed some medical issues now as well, so I've been taking care of her more and more.

I did however spend this weekend moving down into the basement apartment of our house. The new room is about twice the size I originally had. What makes this even better is that I now have a space and desk devoted completely to modeling/painting! I no longer have to share space with all my computer hardware.
