Has anyone tried using Armypainter's Silver primer for GK vehicles? How does it look? I still plan to do some real paint work after priming, but is the shortcut worth it?

i use tamiya dark gun metal on my GK (only have a pow arm squad) and they turned out nice.
you need to cut the sheen back with washes, but you should be doing that as part of the process anyway :)

i'd say yeah do it, it saves time and money.

I tried the Army Painter green, and found it to go on very thickly. It's not for me - I'd rather have a thin layer of primer with my foundation colour beneath it. Also, Citadel paints didn't adhere to it as well as to other primers. I shan't be getting any more myself.

However, bear in mind that I play 40K more for the painting and modelling side of the hobby - as a result, I'm a little fussy about things like that, and not remotely fussy about getting things finished quickly. If you want your models up and painted, and aren't too bothered about having them look really really good, Army Painter stuff is excellent.

Think of it this way - are you after quantity (i.e.: speedy painting of large numbers of models for gaming purposes) or quality (i.e.: slooooooow painting times for hobby joy)? If the former, go Army Painter. If the latter, go with your regular primer.

Well, I do care about the look of the models. I don't tend to try and rush through a job. I was mainly thinking about the vehicles, and not the individual troops. I generally use the flat black Krylon as a primer, then was using an airbrush to spray Boltgun and Chainmail in 2 passes for those guys, but I was hoping if the silver primer looked OK, then I could forgo setting everything up for an airbrush session and just get a quick starting baseline for the vehicles before I go over them and hit the details.

Here are pics of 1 of my dreads and a couple of PA GK that I used my current method to finish. Yes, I know about the mold lines on the dread. They have since been cleaned up :)

So it's not that I'm unhappy with that method, but a good silver primer would go a long way for vehicles if it looks good enough. So no one has tried the silver version of the Armypainter, then. I might have to look for that Tamiya version. Thanks for the input.

your finished guys look to have a similar look to the ones i am doing..... i'll try and snap a quick pic while the sun is bright :)

tamiya light gun metal (not dark like i mentioned earlier sry) and some washes is all i did on the metal. washes were vallejo smoke ink and badab black/nuln oil. i was tempted to add a blue in there to brighten them but i dont like the bright look i see alot of people use.

WIP shots, need to add more chainmail to silver to flatten the metallics a touch

Where do you find your Tamiya sprays? I don't think I've seen them before, but that might just be due to me not looking for them before.

Ah, OK. I'm in the States. But I think I know a few places to look around here.

I like your guys, they look great!

Thanks for the tip!

thanks, they are just at basecoat level really, just mech red and ball red on the red bits and gold and brown/green wash on the gold, still a lot to be done.

i just thought that if you saw the silver it may help you judge.

I have used the army painters silver spray for my land raider and razorback, both to good effect. Worked well for me and I can understand wanting to avoid the hasstle with the airbrush if you can get the same results from a can. I even used masking tape and their red spray to add red livery to the sides of the raider. I will post a pic in the morning if you wish.

I use AP pretty much exclusively.

It does go on heavy, but contracts as it dries and the detail comes back out.

AP Plate Mail is about equal to GW Chain Mail or whatever they are calling it now. If you want a Boltgun base, you are better off using the method you have now.

I like AP sprays, but some colours are hit and miss. The Uniform Grey is working out just fine for my Space Wolves, but recently I started a commission unit of Chaos Marauders, and the new Barbarian Skin spray was pretty bad. Gave an almost flourescent skin tone, wouldn't take paint well at all, even Base and Dry colours.

I haven't had any bad experiences with their Plate Mail though. It is thick, so be sure to shake that can up real good.

Heck yeah! I'd love to see some pics.

At the moment, I could go either way. Tamiya or AP. I guess whichever is easier to find. I have 4 Rhinos to get done, and this sounds like it could save a lot of time.

Thanks for all the feedback guys (and/or ladies)!

here you go mate, not all quite finished but all the silver and red and white strips etc were done with army painter sprays and masking tape.

Not award winning, but table top I think :)

Yeah, those look great. Thanks for the pics. I hope to be starting those as soon as I get the big 'nids painted up for an escalation campaign some friends and I are slogging through.
