I have wanted to start playing Warhammer for ages, but I don't really know how to get started and (unfortunately) I don't have limitless buckets of cash. I found an unopened Warhammer 3rd Edition core box for $40 bucks on ebay, but I didn't know if it was worth buying to start out.
If I buy an older edition, do the miniatures work with the 8th edition rules? How do I know what expansions I can buy?

The Miniatures should work fine in the current edition, but you will definitely want to pick up a rulebook for the current edition. They are drastically different than 3rd edition.
Do you know which army/faction you are interested in?

The models will work fine, but as Chronowraith said, the rules won't. And the models look rather dated by today's standards. So unless you desperately want to play with one of those races (Lizardmen and Bretonians IIRC), I'd recommend going for Island of Blood boxed set. You get much better models and the up-to-date rule book. It's $100 from GW, but you can find them much cheaper on ebay. I've found one on the UK ebay going for just £26, so I'm sure you can find one on the US site for similar prices. Failing that, people are always breaking that set down and selling off the rule book and models separately, so you could pick up a cheap little rulebook and/or Skaven or High Elf models if you wish to start one of those armies. Or you could always buy the full set and sell off the models you don't want as it's a good way to learn to the mechanics of the rules. Either way, once you have a hang of the rules, you'll need to settle on a race to play and pick up an army book and models. The battalion box sets are a good way of starting off an army and if you need advice on what race suits your playstyle, let us know. Hope this helps, welcome to the forum!

Thank you both for the responses. I was considering the old stuff on eBay, but you have a good point. I think I will go ahead and buy Islands of Blood box set from my local game shop. It's $99 there and I could save some cash on eBay, but I'd rather support a local shop.
And I would love suggestions about what race to focus on for my armies.
Thanks!
