A friend and I had a discussion today regarding the effects of Nightvision. He contends that since the rule is worded to say a unit with Nightvision (pg. 40) ignores the "effects" of Night Fighting (pg. 124), and Night Fighting grants the USRs of Stealth & Shrouded to the target unit depending on distance, that as these USRs should be ignored at all times by units with Nightvision (regardless of whether they were granted by Night Fighting). On the other side, it is my assumption that the "effect" of Night Fighting grants those special rules to a unit under certain conditions; therefore, a unit with Nightvision would only ignore the USRs Stealth & Shrouded when granted by Night Fighting.

Needless to say my Harlequins and I both think that his interpretation is shenanigans, and his Tau and their Blacksun Filters think otherwise, so we want to hear what you have to say!

He would ignore Shrouded and Stealth that was given due to distance in night fighting, not from their own special rules.

If Shrouded/Stealth came from a source other than night fighting, they wouldn't be a night-fighting effect, right?

He contends that as night fighting grants them, they are the "effect" of Night Fighting, and the rules for Nightvision say to ignore the effects of Night Fighting. I don't agree, but I thought I should put it to the test of the internet.

Tell him it's the other way around, some specially adept at camouflage or psychically shielded units are shrouded as a special ability, regardless of it being day or night. So no, night visión does not cancel a camaleonine cloak, a camo net or veil of tears.

That's actually backwards.

They are effects primarily granted by other sources. Night-fighting also happens to grant them.

Seriously though, a reasonable, plain reading would never conclude that you get to ignore Stealth and Shrouding from sources other than Night Fighting with night vision. That's just silly.

Kjolnir's right.

Easiest rules judgement ever.
