View Full Version : Dave's Traitor Guard

Hey all I'm finally going to put myself out there in the hopes of finding the adoration and love I deserve from that special someone... oh and this will be the start of my modelling diary on my Traitor Guard, the goal being that it will keep me motivated to complete them.
Basically there is very little greenstuffing in this force, it's mostly just kit bashing mainly catachans and marauders. Nothing new there but I like them so thought I would share.
These are pictures of the basic force I have completed thus far. Next on the cards is either some rough riders or a squadron of basilisks.
Thoughts, criticisms and comments welcome :D

Ok so this weeks update,
Not a lot of stuff done but I went back to work this week so I'm amazed I got this much done. I have decided to rejig my platoon command squad which I wasn't happy with. They didn't have any real kick so I decided to replace useless dudes with melta gun dudes.
This also led to a change in my company command so I made a new vox operator and I really like his pose with the axe. Enjoy.

Hey again everyone. So here is the next addition to my force, 10 rough riders and an assault platoon command squad.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the rough riders painted up but I'm not sure how to paint the horses. At this stage I was thinking of making them black with highlights kind of like the hair on the rest of my infantry. Also would appreciate any advice on painting the large space of animal bodies as I haven't done that before.

Ok so it's time for an update..
First 5 rough riders are pretty much done. I went with an onyx black spear tip with weird runes on them to justify why they are power spears that only work on the first strike. I'm going with the story that they are cursed and the stone explodes on impact. They are not quite finished, base still needs to be done and their banner bearer is missing his flag, but you'll get the idea.

Ok so pretty much finished. This time just to mix it up I used the flash as well. I had a go at the banner, painted some chaos symbols on it. I'm pretty happy with the final look of the model. They look pretty mean, now I just have to do the other 5... argh
Oh and that symbol on the right of the flag represents my armies planet in the eye.

Ok so new update, my forgeworld has been churning out the tanks. I have a big game of apocalypse coming up in a few months so I'm trying to build as many of my tanks as possible. I've been playing around with the new GW liquid green stuff which isn't too bad and am trying to build some sexy looking basilisks, I also have a baneblade and shadow sword to build and equip in my armies theme.
As always comments welcome.

Ok so here is a demo model of a big mutant for one of my beastmen units (mutants) I'm not sure I like the beastman head and might change it to be shrouded with cloth or something. I also think in future that I will add horns to the neck protruding from the hair.
Thoughts?

Also, do you have any plans to add Valkyries/Vendetta's to your force?
Thanks Boscolamb, I think on paper I have like 10,000 points but most is still in boxes. At the moment I could comfortably field about 2000-3000 points not including chaos daemon or chaos marine allies.
I've been fighting a slowly increasing points scale narrative campaign with a friend to try to push myself to complete units and it's helping. As far as aerial units go I don't have any vens or vals but I have been thinking about getting some recently. When I first started this army they didn't exist and its been a long slow process. I'm sort of relearning the rules also and I already see how valuable they would be.
Anyway here's an overdue update, my Commisar Lord, mortar teams and a demo of what my guys will look like in Cadian armour called my "Steel Throats" regiment.

Ok and today I got off my backside and finished a unit I really like, my bombardiers (special weapons squad with det charges). I love these guys and recently decimated almost a whole squad of ork nobs in evy armour with a warboss. My buddy on the receiving end of it was very unhappy :p
At any rate these are them all finished. I used the bottom half of Cadian vox packs for the det charges.

In addition I also finished my demo model of my first big mutant (these will double as ogryns but don't have ripper guns). I'm really happy with his armour but not sure I've made him look different enough from the original black orc body he's modelled from. Thoughts?

Do you use a standard Imperial Codex, or a variant, such as the Renegades of Vrax (from Forgeworld)?
The new figures are awesome! This is one of the best-looking Traitor Guard armies I've seen anywhere. I have a pretty significant Traitor Guard/Renegade army as well, but I have a very different style force (Forgeworld, and Cadians w/Kromlech gasmask heads). If I were as talented a painter as you, I might have tried going with your style force.
Please keep up the great work!
Daveisdvd
08-17-2013, 04:20 AM
Thanks Boscolamb, I do like those Kromlech heads but they are not my style, they feel too 'Nurgle' and my guys are more Khorne.
When I first started building this army it was using the old 13th Black Crusade codex of Lost and Damned. These days I use the standard IG Codex. I have like 60 mutants (beastmen) which will be used as cultists in the future with my Chaos Space Marine allies. I have read the Vrax codex but I like the standard guard one better. I sat down and counted the points I actually have the other day (not including allies) and it wasn't as much as I thought, about 6400 points. I need to add more infantry, some devil dogs and another squadron of Russ' but I still have plenty to build as it is.
Currently working on painting my mortars, a few priests and some Cadian armoured guys who will be veterans. Stay tuned.
Boscolamb
08-17-2013, 02:34 PM
Nurgle? Hmmm, I hadn't thought so, but maybe. My guys ally are Slaanesh. I've just gotten a small Space Marine army (3,000 pts.) and a Slaanesh Daemon army (600 pts.), and I hope to use one of them at a time as allies to my traitor/renegade guard. Here are some images from a big game last year.

Yeah it's a pretty bold colour choice combining green and purple. It's hard to tell from the pics but I would suggest experimenting with more washes and perhaps trying out a slaanesh symbol or transfer on their armour (white if possible). Get someone to give you a demo of how to dry brush your purple armour, it will look really good with a denab stone highlight or perhaps a brighter purple. The Russ trophy racks look really good.
I'm just putting the finishing touches on a russ vanquisher before I start painting it. It's the first one of the new kits I have built and I'm adding lots of nifty skulls and chains left over from my chaos marauder cavalry. It's also the first tank where I have fully magnetised the guns. Very excited about being able to customise the weapon options. It was actually pretty easy for the most part.
Here's 3 of my priests (still need to add more gear to them) and the front of my vanquisher.

Looking good love the way they all come together. Any advice for zombie/cultist for Typhus squads. I want to run a more guard/cultist look but at least 2 squads of zombies in there as well. I gonna keep following your work man it is awesome stuff.

09-28-2013, 12:46 AM
Your guard are incredibly similar to my own, down to the pose a choice of bits for the rough riders. :)
Might I suggest that you add something to the spearheads to represent explosive charges?! Also to answer the mans previous question about zombies... Buying a plastic zombie regiment and mixing the bits in with guard bits is a really effective and cheap way of getting lots of zombie guard...
Daveisdvd
10-01-2013, 12:33 AM
Hey Dark Pheonix, thanks for the praise. As far as your "zombie cultists" go I'm not really sure. Zombies are a little thin to kitbash with standard guard bits, although you might be able to do something if you combined imperial flagellants with catachan arms and zombie heads or even a large mix of bits from each.
I've seen some great conversions where people have put all zombie torsos on catachan or cadian legs and it looks great. I also really like the look of the undead gouls but I haven't been bothered springing for a box yet. I have some plans to use them to kit bash some dark mechanicus slaves for my army (servitors).
Dimitrios I did a lot of thinking about the explosive tips on the spears. In the end I decided they are using incredibly sharp cursed stone from a daemon world in the eye. Each of the spears has a glowing little chaos rune painted on its blade. I did experiment with grenades and other add-on explosives but they ruined the sleek appearance of the lance. So anyway that's my story for how why their spears are so fancy :D

What stats will you use for you mutant/abhuman (beastmen) in your army? I just purchased a small painted army of 60 for myself and am uncertain what stats to give them.
Right now I was thinking similar to Orks: WS 4, BS 2, S 4, T 4, I 2, W 1, L 7. What do you think?
interrogator_chaplain
11-13-2013, 08:57 PM
For abhuman mutants? I definitely don't think that their WS would be on par with Space Marines. Definitely drop that down to at least 3. Same with toughness, sure they're tough, but again, probably not Space Marine tough. Otherwise that seems reasonable, but take it up with your opponent first.
Daveisdvd
01-21-2014, 08:01 AM
Boscolamb, there used to be a data sheet getting around in the original apocalypse for mutants "the lost and the damned", I think the chaplain is correct about the stats.
On that data sheet the WS 3 BS 2 S 3 T 3 W 1 I 3 A 1 Ld 5 Sv 6+ at 3 points per model squads of 10 - 20. What's nifty is that you can upgrade half of them to be big mutants (+7 points each) with +1 increased strength, toughness, wounds and attacks.
I think they still work pretty well as a meat shield but more for holding points in your deployment zone or as a speed bump for enemy assault units. Hope that helps.
When I first started this army there was this great "Eye of Terror" codex and it had mutants as an entry and you could give the a mark of each of the gods. I used to take Khorne and use 20 as a meat shield for a kitted our Aspiring Champion, it worked pretty well. These days I'm sticking to the most recent codex
Boscolamb

Yes, thanks. I did wind up going pretty much what the Chaplain said. I also took some advice from one of my regular opponents based on the Fantasy Beastmen.

Hey all here's a quick update. I've been playing around lately a lot with psykers and I really like the wyrdvane psykers, I've been experimenting with using them as a dedicated daemonology unit to spawn units of daemon assault troops. Not reliable but fun when it works.
These are my WIP wyrdvanes. I'm still not confident with working with green stuff but I like the look (Sorry the photos are a bit blurry).

Ok update here, pretty much finished my wyrds, I think I will add blood script all over their flesh. Might do it on an extra arm first to see if I like it. I think it would be cool to add that effect to indicate they have killed some slaves before the battle and covered themselves in blood runes in preparation for summoning daemons... which will be their job :D

Curious if you got IA13 and, if yes, which list variant you were thinking of using.
Yep purchased IA13 over xmas and have played 3 games with it. At first I was fairly unimpressed with the renegades but then I started to play around a bit. I just played a game on the weekend where I managed to fit 85 infantry, a rapier laser battery, 6 tanks and 3 walkers into 1500 points. I had no flyers or anti-air which I have to adjust but the guy I was playing didn't have any flyers. It was basically a giant horde of manics and was a lot of fun to play. The marine player was actually pretty freaked out.
I ran the Arch-demagogue with level 2 Primaris witch upgrade and backed him up with two rogue psykers. Managed to toss out a squad of blood letters on 6 dice in the first turn to put me up to 95 screaming fanatics. Everything I have read says to play as a horde and after that game I've gota say it works. My opponent actually had a very shooty marine list but he had to focus on the 40 mutants bearing down on him led by 10 blood letters. My gun line just simply out-shot his. Can I say I would almost always pay for the upgrade on the chimeras to give them BS3 and and autocannon turrent. So worth it for a total of 70 points.
I've also played around with the bloody handed reaver commander but I can't seem to make a list that feels competitive but I feel there is one there, might only work at 1750pts+
At the moment I'm working on a list allied with Chaos marines. Take 40 mutants and throw in Covenant of Khorne, and enforcer with combat drugs and a dark apostle and you've got a very scary unit. Reroll hits first turn of any combat, reroll wounds and has rage on the charge and won't break until the apostle goes down. They die like flies but they're so cheap and they'll take the pressure off the big guns.
Let me know if you come up with something interesting yourself.
As for the imperial aquillas I remove the eagles on most models or at least gouge them out to taint them but as these guys were resin I was afraid of taking a big chunk out by accident.

Update...Shmupdate
So I have been working away on a few things. I recently decided I was sick of have no decent terrain, I usually rely on other ppl or the local gaming store. Lame I know but I fear it is the result of a transient lifestyle. At any rate I wanted to show people what's been going on and although terrain isn't part of my army I have designed stuff that fits with my colour theme. I'm going for a deathworld slum shack kind of theme. Think fallout I suppose. I bought some really great laser cut snap together card kits which have given me some awesome little extras to add detail to my buildings. Anyway pretty happy with the first batch.

Have you ever given consideration to taking a Mutant Overlord Devotion renegade detachment, and combining it with a regular Astra Militarum ally? It would allow you access to units unavailable to Renegades, such as Primaris Psykers, Masters of Ordnance, and Vendettas. I can find nothing in IA13 that prevents such an alliance.

Hey Bosco, check out p150 "a Renegades and Heretics army is considered identical to a standard Chaos Space Marine army". So you can't ally with guard unless applying the 'come the apocalypse' rule. Guard are no where near as good in my opinion anyway. Yes I have looked at the mutant overlord, I'd like to build an assault army around him as he's realistically the only dangerous demagogue in CC.
In other news here's my latest finished addition to the army. Chaos lord on jug.

I'm not talking about tournament games, but rather friendly games. IG-based armies are never officially recognized as chaos-themed, renegade armies. Most opponents will recognize that you are using Renegades that ally regularly with CSM and Daemons. Should be treated as Battle Brothers under most circumstances.

I get what you're saying Bosco.
At any rate it's update time, sliding a little into the daemons at the moment. Also bought an air brush so starting to get really pro.

I've just begun airbrushing myself for a little over a month now. Mainly base-painting models with it, but it is such an improvement and quicker.
I look forward to more updates of what you have to offer.

And more... I tried out a gold sharpie pen on the armour trim of these guys. Was really happy with the finish.

Ok so continuing I've been working on some Black Legion since getting traitors hate because they're the coolest try-hard villains in the galaxy. I wanted to add some depth to the armour and worked hard to make the armour worn and characterful.

Really dig your painting style, classically chaose ..but darker. Can't wait to see what you manage with an airbrush too.
