What is a character?

So I know that sergeants are characters as well as models that have different stat lines than the rest of the units. And I know that Independent Characters are also "characters," but what else is classified as a character? Are HQs by definition characters? What about monstrous creatures? Are elite units like Paladins or Nobs "units of characters"? Is there any better explanation of what a character is?

There is a notation in the right hand column of character status.

Most named or unique models aren't listed in the appendix, though.

Most named models are of the same type as a Character, though. For example, Fateweave isn't listed in the appendix, but Lords of Change are Characters, and Fateweaver in the fluff is a Lord of Change. So I'm assuming he's a Character.

There are some oddballs, though, like Guardsman Marbo or The Changeling. Guardsmen and Horrors aren't characters. So what about the named/unique versions, are they characters?

What if I am fielding an all DS termy and assault squad army, or an Elysian army, do I not get to use their special rules?

All IG unique units replace the command unit that is a character.

Sgt Bastonne and Gunnery Sgt Harker both are veteran sergeants with unique weapons / statlines, thus atleast to my understanding making them characters as well.

Same with the company command and platoon command squads. All have been stated to have a character, that is only replaced by named dude. They are still senior / junior officers (who by their own right are said to be characters).

I don't think theres any word currently about Guardsman marbo. Everything would suggest that he is a character, but since it doesn't read anywhere so, it cannot be kept 100% sure (like your oppoenent might ask you to show where it is said that it is a char...)

EDIT: Just looked the IG codex: Marbo is an Infantry(Unique), Thats all there is to the type he is..
