I just found something very exciting in the rulebook: you may take a second Primary Detatchment in games of 2000 points or greater. The rule is found on page 110. So in a 2K game one could take:

2 HQs (min)
4 Troops (min)
up to 6 of any other slot! Six elites! Six Heavies!

As a Tyranid player I find this to be quite exciting. So many of our best things are in the Elite slot. It can be hard to balance out a Tyranid army but with the option of taking six Elites suddenly I feel that I have much more freedom to include units I often leave out. For example: I rarely take a Venomthrope. Putting one into the game deprives me of a Zoanthrope unit or a Hive Guard unit. At 2000 points I might start using Venomthropes now!

oh man.. i just started tyranids (as in, i don't even have a playable set of models yet!), but i would think that venomthropes + termagant/hormagaunt hordes would be pretty killer!

'Farm, I've always wanted to use Venomthropes but never have because they just haven't been as usefull as other Elite choices I've had. I might have to start using them now!

I thought detachments couldn't be the same army as the main one you are using?

The opposite. They must be the same army.

Allied detachments are different from this. You can always, at any point level, take one allied detachment with 1 HQ, 1 Troop, and up to 1 Elite/FA/Heavy slot.

At 2000pts, your normal army can take a second, regular, FOC, as mentioned above. You can do this while also including an allied detachment, and if you take a second FOC you may take a second allied detachment (that must be the same army as your other allied detachment).

So, at 2000pts, you can take up to 6 HQs, 14 troops, 8 Elites, 8 FA, and 8 Heavy Support choices, across 2 different armies as per the ally chart, with a minimum of 1 HQ per detachment (4 min) and 6 troops minimum (2 per main army detachment and 1 per allied detachment).

Note that it doesn't say anywhere that even the fortification "detachment" would be doubled. So just one from the rules (ofc you can decide otherwise with your gaming friends)

And taking second detachment will be point heavy easily since you are forced to spend points in something you necessarily don't want / need
