An armoured transport of truly massive proportions, the Spartan is a heavy assault tank previously all but unknown outside of the revered Space Marine Chapters and the secretive Adeptus Mechanicus. The Spartan is a huge armoured conveyer whose purpose is to carry a large body of troops into the very heart of an enemy’s battle lines, weathering weapons fire that would be the death of any lesser vehicle.

Its design bears clear connections with that of the mighty Land Raider, and its genius is such that the greater proportion of its interior space is given over to a transport capacity greater than any other Imperial vehicle save the super-heavy Gorgons – being capable of carrying twenty-five power armoured Space Marines into battle. It is, however, considerably faster on the battlefield thanks to potent reactor-driven motive drives, and it posts an equally potent armament in the form of sponson-mounted quad lascannon batteries and secondary heavy bolters.

The Spartan Assault Tank, model designed by Phil Stutcinskas, is an enormous multi-part resin kit that features a detailed interior. Experimental rules to allow this armoured behemoth to be fielded in games of Warhammer 40,000 will be available to download soon. The Spartan itself can be pre-ordered for despatch from Friday 29th June.

Up for pre-order now.

I like the idea of an estate land raider.
I do not like the look of this though.

God damn you're fast.

I likes it.

Not a great paint scheme though

Rules to come soon? I'm guessing Heavy Bolter, lots of transport space, assault ramp and 2 sets of twinlinked lascannons?

Or otherwise know as lets push the window on what space marine fans will pay for a tank a little further. It does look like better value for money then a Landraider Proteous and I think it's looks better to. There's definitely a need for a tank you can get 10 plus terminators and a captain/Wolf Lord in. I think I'd rather have one of these than a Storm Eagle. I'm not brave enough to order one before they say what chapters it is for though.

Sorry FW, you've taken far too much of my money this month and this doesn't exactly butter my biscuit.

Don't like the heavy bolter turret, overall design is nice but it needs the turret making less guard like and more land raider like

Also ten man assault terminator squad with lightning claws and a captain and chaplain attached.... or biggest target on the board as it's also known...

Absolon

The original Spartan featured in White Dwarf many years ago was designed to drive through the plasma curtains the AdMech used during the Heresy. If they go with that fluff, this tank could be near impossible to kill

Wolfshade
06-22-2012, 07:15 AM
I did not know that.
Thank you for the info.
Though in present gameverse plasma weaponry is around S7 so AV of 14 would make them invulnerable to Plasmas

The Space Marines get another what?

Absolon
06-22-2012, 07:25 AM
The original WD article implied that Titans couldn't survive contact with the plasma curtain. Hence the creation of the spartan. My guess is AV14 with all types of special rules making it extremely difficult to stop

This thing makes my pants really happy. Very, very cool.

With all the FW support of new Muhreen stuff, I almost want to get rid of my IG army (I dont' really like how the Cadians look anyways). Anyone interested?

Psychosplodge
06-22-2012, 08:17 AM
Cadians were a terrible guard army to have picked for plastics, there used to be so many ranges that had far better models...

As to "depends on what army it's for:"

To that I say Bollucks. Buy the model if you like it. If you're playing with a group that wont let you use a FW unit because it isn't "technically in their army list" then you're playing with the wrong group.

I'm one of the (apparently only) people that like the Tiny Talon, and I'm painting mine in SW colors to go with my SW assault rams and Storm Eagle.

Psychosplodge

At Shrewsbury we have quite a laid-back attitude. If you've bought it, USE IT. We have Black Templar Stormtalons, Space Wolf Stormravens, and a whole stack of FW kits.

It allows for much more enjoyable gaming.

I still have my Rogue Treader converted Spartan (White Dwarf article had the instructions). As I recall it was the first tank that could carry terminators and to have 'power of the machine spirit'. If I recall it also had a power field (Invuln save).

This isn't mine, but the same model/convertion from the White Dwarf.

@ Absolon - I don't think the Sabre will be back - Autocannons used to be useful for anti armour. Now it would just be a less useful Pred.

@ Jmichael - I didn't remember the chassis being reversed/upsidedown. What WD was this in?

Still got mine also. Not really a big fan of these style LR in general, always thought the exposed track look was kinda outa place and to vulnerable looking.

Just my opinion :D

White Dwarf 119. Yup, you turned the chassis upside down and used the hull of a Rhino for the extension. I personally think it still looks great, and have often thought of making one with the current Land Raider and Rhino chassis (but alas, I play Eldar and SoB now).

Ahh yes, brings back memories:) I had two of these bad boys painted for my DA. I can't for the life of me recall what happened to them though, they are sorely missed:(

As for the FW version I actually love it, though I'll wait to see which chapters can include them first.

I find that quite interesting. The guys I play with are all into the cool Forge World stuff and we're all for trying out new campaigns and expansions, but I don't think we'd go as far as allowing 'cherry-picking' from other Codexes, just because we fancied the model. Surely half the gaming challenge of the hobby is trying to fight your battles with the units you're given in the Codex?

All that said, if it's fun for you guys, then why the hell not! And the irony is that it seems 6th Edition will be allowing us all to 'cherry-pick' to a certain extent!

Laters.

I did like the heavy metal articles some of them were really insightful, others were like here we have used only 152 of the 180 paints available and it was too much.

I cancelled my WD subsription ages ago when each month it was lotr this that and the other some months there weren't even a fantasy article in it!
