I'm wondering if the Battlefield and tank markers that are going to be available will be needed for the 6th edition?

Or are they likely to be in the box set? I'd be happy to make do with proxy tokens until it comes out if that's the case.

I doubt they will be necessary but i bet they will be extremely useful.

Markers are handy now, they won't be vital but they will make things easier. It isn't like you need to buy GWs though, you can jot things down on bits of paper or use dice or make your own.

As a Necron player, I enjoy markers. I can use them for generated Scarab Swarms, RP counters, or Entropic Strike counters. They're pretty vital to me.

Counters a really useful, the number of times I have seen dice markers being collected as part of a roll makes me sad

That's a good point; I've been using different colored dice to track wounds and that starts to get messy. I can imagine it being worse if I need to start tracking hull points as well.

But as Eldargal says you don't need to buy the GW ones you can use paper to make notes

I use Mechanicum Dice for wounds.

They've always been in the rules, and they've made them in the past. It's just a new way to make more money on new editions. Tokens for DE, smoke markers for tanks, wreck markers for destroyed vehicles, objective markers.

There's no right way or wrong way with markers. GW is just putting some new ones out.

I'd wager they'll be pretty much exactly the same as the Vehicle Damage dice they brought out in 4th Edition... pretty little symbols on the die to track effects, and if they made them match up to the damage chart, you can even roll them instead of D6s for damage rolls.

So... useful, yes - cool, fairly - essential? no.
