View Full Version : What does a Commissar wear under his Greatcoat?

Where do I begin with such a self explanatory title? Well maybe a little background as to why I am asking;

This coming saturday, my FLGS is having their 21st Birthday party. GW has/is sending them a ton of stuff (including at least one BL author and someone from FW... If rumours are to be believed, maybe even a few other well known names and faces) and we are going to spend the day eating cake, playing minigames, possibly having a few slices of cake, the Golden Grot painting competition, a raffle (we are very British, good Sir), some cake, an auction and much encouragement for fance dress. Oh, and I've heard that there might be some cake.

So, not one to shy from publid embaressment, I have my greatcoat, hat, red sash, copy of the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer, dog tags and Plasma pistol ready. I'll be picking up a sword tonight and possibly some armour. But what else does a Commissar wear? I have some jack boots. I was planning on a pair of black trousers (cus I may get cited for public indecent exposure if I just had the greatcoat...) and some form of shirt.

What colour shirt though? Belt or Braces? Other details? Any other suggestions?

My internet research suggests a Lacy red corset and fishnet stockings. I may be looking at the wrong pages though... Best double back and check again though.

Of course, I'll post a few pics from the day itself. For anyone interested, all the details of the day can be found here (https://www.facebook.com/GWLeicester). Anyone in the Midlands should pop down if they can. Did I mention there will be free cake?

Flakk armour! (Unless you are upgraded to carapace)
I had in my mind that they would qweatr a shirt tie and braces, unless they are females in which case corset and fishnets all the way!
Black shirt, red tie

Good spot Denzark.

Going in to own later, so will see about picking up some Carapace armour. Preferabley something along the line of Germanis Knights, with eagle heraldry emblazoned across the chest... but then again I am on a budget of next to zero, so what ever the fancy dress shop has that's cheap will do :p

Surely they just wear the Armour of Contempt

You have no choice now: you can only go with the stockings and corset.I would.

Yeah there's a similar one that's full length side on shooting, but that will do lol

Fortunately I haven't the moobs to fill out a corset like that. I'm more of a skinny wrake kind of geek :)

Floofy white rennaissance shirt with ruffles at the wrists, aviator-style scarf (silk, white or black) around the throat as a tie, and a red sash. Reference Ciaphas Cain covers

I believe there are references in Gaunt's Ghosts to Gaunt wearing what amounts to a white dress shirt, black trousers and braces under his stormcoat.

Now, I've got all the Ciaphus Cain novels sitting on a shelf next to me. Didn't even occur to me to look. Same is true of the Gaunt's Ghost books (not the anthologies...) Still, I think this is a more interesting debate :p

The original article in the Compendium says they wear standard regimental uniform under the coat.

The original article in the Compendium says they wear standard regimental uniform under the coat.

Now I am surprised by this given that they are outside of the regimental command structure

Psychosplodge
06-14-2012, 03:34 AM
And essentially the point of them is to not be part of the regiment...

Just wear nothing other than the Greatcoat, then you can be a flasher!
Alternatively, just wear a top hat and a bomber jacket. Works every time.

Well, whether it's accurate to fluff or not, my commissar costume is done! Tried it on a couple of times (adjustments, don't you know) and I must say I do look the part. But I guess you guys will have to decide for yourselves...

But not today. No teasers pics, you'll just have to look for my post on saturday. Head to GW Leicester's facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/GWLeicester). They'll probably get pictures up before I do. Currently they are advertising their Birthday party with a picture of the female manager posing with the Chainsword we will be playing with on the day. Check it out! (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=343331635738926&set=a.188228117915946.46006.129242433814515&type=3&theater)

While you're there, feel free to vote on the painting competition they are running at the moment. Just 'like' one of the 5 entries. Most likes on by Saturday wins (mine is the converted Warkopta (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=342232825848807&set=a.188228117915946.46006.129242433814515&type=1&theater) :p)

I'll see about getting some more pictures up soon, so you can see the whole costume. I'm not sure which was the best compliment from the day; being asked by several people about joining their LARPing groups, being thanked by a little girl for protecting our country when I went to get lunch or nearly being arrested by the police because several people had seen "a man in military uniform with a sword walking with purpose like he was on a mission". Fortunately the bobbies who caught up with me were very understanding (especially when they saw it was a plastic sword) about me explaining 'walking with purpose' was the fact I had been bursting to go to the loo and needed to move pretty quickly to get there.

If you look hard enough on the internet, it is out there... Just not in the Commissar uniform. Also, I didn't have a beard back then. But there might just be a GW poster in the background.

Alas, I didn't make the chainsword. THQ had it built for the release of Space Marine. I just got to borrow it :P I did make the plasma pistol though.

Will they let you borrow the Rhino they converted? If so we can get some beers and have a road trip

Somehow doubt it. I believe they gave the chainsword to GW, who let the FLGS manager borrow it (how many other stores have been open for 21 years?) for the party. I only got to borrow it briefly, as did many others, for a picture.

You could have sat out the top hatch waving it shouting, "Get closer so I can hit it with my sword!"

Probably Sheffield, as meadowhell celebrated 20 years this weekend and I'm sure sheffield is probably older...

It is the most important thing to do when riding out the hatch...although shouldn't it be a power sword?

Technically yes, but hey if I'm driving a rhino around I'm not paying attention to detail, nor am I trying to fit 10 guys in the back!

I suppose you could stack them, but it's going to interfere with a quick exit...

Wolfshade

The comment about being well stacked is too easy.

You'd have to utilise the top hatch

With this I have to argue, it is the second most important thing. The first being to brace one self so one doesn't eat the pintle mounted weapon every time the driver taps the brakes or hit a pothole.

The third being watching out for low tree branches.:):):)

Nah because the power sword is an upgrade from pintle mount...
