View Full Version : Night Scythe - A Third Sprue?

First time poster, so apologies if this thread is in the wrong area!

Anyways. Picked me up 3 Nightscythes yesterday, and very nice they are too.

But....having built two (one Night, one Doom...hmm...sounds like a bad metal band) I am struck by the entirely superfluous parts, namely additional cabling.

Given how GW has been making the most of it's sprues, it seems very, very strange to have parts that simply aren't used. I have been over the instructions with a finetoothed comb, and checked the second one meticululously, and there's just nowhere for them to go.

Furthermore, their are very clear anchor points and design decisions taken with the way the kit is presented. The central consists of four parts, two of which are additional plating adding detail. The underside, where the Tesla Destructor sits has alcove where you mount them, but it's too large for them to sit snugly, instead just being mounted by post and hole. The engines themselves have what appears to be post and peg areas as well.

The real clincher? There are parts on the model with detailing...which are completely, 100% hidden from view.

I reckon we'll see a further release down the liine, with the sprue already designed, if not in existence (like the Deffrolla for the Battlewagon). If I'm right (and I'm going to go right ahead and assume I am...) what new toy can be look forward to???

I still have my third one to build, so provided I can get organised, I should be able to prove photos of what I'm on about.

Every vehicle kit has that; most of the interior details are things you'll never see, even if you decide to paint them and squint really hard when looking into the hatch on a vehicle. Heck, Land Raiders have that one side hatch that has all sorts of interior detailing like tools, etc., and I don't think I've ever seen anyone who hasn't glued the external hatch over it, unless they have some sort of magnetization plan. There are details on the Ghost/Doomsday Ark kits which, while not 100% hidden, are damned hard to see as well.

I haven't put a scythe kit together yet, myself, but it sounds like the 'extra' cabling you're talking about is all the tubing that leads to the wormhole and/or death ray beneath the model. GW instructions are seldom perfect, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not entirely clear where they fit on the model.

If you do snap some pictures I'd like to see what you're talking about, though.

Cables are definitely superfluous. The variants use different cables. For the Doomscythe, there's the requisite two cables. For the Nightscythe, you use the other style. There's recessed areas for one end to mount into, but you get six cables.

Was after building my first Nightscythe I noticed, so I really took my time on the Doomscythe, and my second Nightscythe. They definitely don't go anywhere else.

Photos attached are a bit ropey, but you sould be able to see the cables in question. You can also see the alcoves I was on about. They're oddly shaped for the weapons being mounted in them...

Interesting.

Say, how swap-able are the portal/death ray parts? They seem like they'd be easy enough to interchange...

100% interchangable. Same mounting points, and no common parts. The main socket is a ball socket, but with a square peg to ensure correct allignment. Certainly when I built them, that socket itself held it all nicely together, though I guess the typical wear and tear of multiple and frequent swappage would take it's toll.

This is why GW is a kick bu†† miniature maker.

They did this for the model enthusiasts that want to paint every little doodad and perhaps even set up the model to be 'taken apart' for looking at the interior.

Thanks for the info about the interchangeability.

Looks like you could be on to something re: the third sprue containing bitz from an unreleased kit. See eldargal's latest in the 40k flyers thread in the rumours forum.

Apparently Necrons could be due for a 3rd flyer sometime next year.

I magnetized both of mine easily enough. 3/16" x 1/16" magnets worked well on the center point, and 1/16" x 1/32" for the cable ends.
