Philosophy!

So here is the point that I am thinking about; why do I waste so much time at work watching the forums?
Is there something compelling me to be here? Do I enjoy the sense of comradeship? Am I bored? Am I looking for arguments to laugh at?

The answer to all of that is: "probably".

What do you all do for work? By the looks of it you waste as much time as me. :D

I read this forum, listen to the TGS podcast once a week, watch totalbiscuit and jessie cox play terraria, watch dexterity bonus, read half the cheezburger network sites, poke fb, and then occasionally make my boss ****loads of money for very little reward hence the total dedication and effort demonstrated....

In my family we don't 'work', we sometimes deign to accept money in return for doing things we wanted to do anyway. I am on a museums payroll in a very, very junior position where I catalogue things, move boxes around and flirt with wealthy potential donors at fundraisers. I'm supposed to help look after the small collection of classical antiquities but thanks to understaffing I end up doing lots more things. I'm very good at my job, I move those boxes and catalogue stuff like nobodies business. The male senior staff want to promote me and the female senior staff want to fire me and thanks to budget constraints in the current financial climate I only get called in for half a dozen hours a week anyway.

The rest of the week is spent hitting my brothers with swords and daggers, eating, hanging around BoLs while painting, reading and playing video games.

I wish I didn't have to work 10 hours a day, it's such a f'ing drag. I feel so old because I'm tired all of the time. :(

He is quite scary... I know, I had to live with him for 3 years!

I'm currently doing the hardest job I've ever done. Unemployed and desperately trying to find a job even remotely related to my Masters Degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics. Part of the reason it is so galling is I am putting in the hours and nearly as much paperwork as most office jobs, but get no payment for it (well, I am on Jobseekers Allowance now, but most of the jobs I've done I earned more than that in a day...) and I don't really see anyone on a day to day basis other than my parents.

Only upside of this situation is that I can post on BoLS as often as I want, can get out and enjoy the sunshine we've had here for the last week and can make the time to go and help my grandparents with a few chores (such as cutting the grass, cleaning the car, small bits of DIY) that they are unfortunately now a little to infirm to do. Just have to make the time up later in the evenings or get up earlier in the morning.

Dude, that sounds bad. I don't quite know how to respond to that.
I would normally offer you a hug, but you're an hour and a half away from me. :(

I suppose at least you're helping others, and that makes you a good man.
I understand your feeling of isolation though, I live in a hamlet in the middle of the countryside, there's no one my age and I only see people at the weekend when I can go to Shrewsbury.

Wolfshade, does your job mean you are one of the people reasponsible for how long we have to wait at traffic lights?

Nope :)
Thankfully not.
I know lots about the various algorithms that control them and stuff like that, but that must be one of the most thankless tasks. Imagine try explaining to someone that they have to wait 120s while the other direction only waits 90s because it improves the overall junction performance by 27%

Psychosplodge
05-31-2012, 05:53 AM
Tell me, how does my direction losing it's turn in the sequence everytime a bloody tram comes help traffic flow?

Wolfshade
05-31-2012, 05:58 AM
The whole tram thing is slightly more political.
The local transit authority (probably your council) has decided that mass transit should have a higher priority, usually to try and encourage a "green" agenda. Consequently, traffic flow is disrupted to enable busses/trains/trams to have right of way.
In terms of weighted passenger travel times, the tram is believed to have a higher population density then your car so by giving the tram priority then it gets more people to the location quicker.
There are other concerns with trams over their stopping distance and stuff compared with that of a car.
In this case it is not so much traffic flow as population flow, though I must admit my knowledge of tranist systems are vague I deal with cars/trucks etc.

No, not me. Haven't had any good costume ideas this year. But then again I promised myself I wouldn't go in costume last year and then this happenned;

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7244/7282105930_22505460be_c.jpg

To be fair, I never planned on going to GD in costume ever until I got the idea for my Culexus costume. That would not leave me head for about 4 weeks until I built it!

Come to think of it, both of those costumes kinda popped into my head about 2 months before the big day, so who knows...

I'm not actually planning on going this year. Unless I win my FLGS's Armie on Parade. Even then I'm not sure I the reserves of will power to make my plan in time. Deffinitely not the cash and quite possibly not the time. Not that any of the above stopped me last year either lol.

I work in Insurance. I am damned good at what I do, but the company recently set out a new progression path, making my position dead end.

Having climbed to the top of my department within a year of entering the industry, I'm now working my contacts. If all goes well, I'm joining the dark side and working for the Ombudsmen. Major pay rise (region of £10k more) and opportunities agogo. Not bad for a 32 year old drop out.

And I have GW to thank! Worked part time, blagged stewardship of a failing store where everyone was sacked for being rubbish, and turned it round in 4 weeks. Rosey glow from that, now onwards and upwards. Best thing to ever happen to me. Shame I stuffed up the management course!

Pigeon and pheasant are both delicious, not sure I'd want to eat city pigeon though. They don't taste like chicken, in fact nothing but chicken tastes like chicken and even then only free-range chicken. Battery chickens don't even taste like chicken, which is why some people think other things taste like chicken because they don't really know what chicken tastes like themselves.

I like the chicken from our local farm. Less a fan of chasing them to catch the one you want, which is an option. I'll let the farmer do that thank you very much. It is kinda fun getting the christmas turkey though. But you have to pick those out early november if you want to choose a specific one before they are culled. Those buggers put up a fight!

Edit; Also, the free range eggs from the other farm are delicious and about a third of the price of the eggs from the supermarket, but sometimes you have to take your own egg cartons.

For the record, when I refer to free range chickens I'm referring to the little blighters running around peoples farms/gardens, not the commercial branding. I really don't give a damn about carbon neutral, I do care about how they are treated because that directly affects the quality of the meat. for msot animals standards are very high, a commercial pig isn't treated too badly anymore. Chickens are though. It isn't jsut ethics either, battery chickens are literally pumped full of hormones and all kinds of horribleness to get them to grow biggere, faster while warding off infection from the horrible conditions. With enough hormones you can make a chicken that would take 6 months to mature ordinarily mature in one month or so. I don't want that in my mouth thanks very much.

I would agree with you EG, but I would be a hypocrite to say that I am support free roaming when my meat buying habbits show that I don't.
Unfortunatley for me I if I want free roaming I have to go to a farmers market or one of my local butchers (which I am lucky to have several to choose from) but the price of meat there is out of my price range so like it or lump it I have two choices to make I either eat less meat or eat poorer quality. I've tried to do both and eat about half the meat that I was consuming say 5 years ago and while that did for a while enable me to buy higher qualtiy with price rises it was no longer economically viable.

If you can't afford it you can't afford it, I'm not snobbish, stupid or ideological enough to suggest that someone should prioritise ethical food over nutrition and budgeting.:) Of course if you have a decent sized garden you can keep a chicken or two easily enough, even if you don't eat them you can get fresh eggs free and they live mostly on kitchen scraps and whatever they can rummage for in the garden.

Friend, get yourself a slow cooker. Because you can keep the food permanently warm, you can cook for for four, and enjoy it over a number of days. This brings economy of scale into the one man on his own food equation.

Freezers are likewise your friend. I'm currently running down my store of frozen food, for a specific reason. I want to a)make use of what I have and b) Ensure I have an empty drawer spare to take full advantage of any multi-buy meat deals.

Keep a good stock of the basics (for me, this means spices, tinned tomatoes, baked beans, various tinned pulses and jars of curry sauce) and you're laughing.

If you're happy to experiment, even cut price tinned foods can be easily pepped up (Heinz Ketchup in value beans helps!).

Oh, and as it can be pricey to keep buying fresh veg, a bit of frozen goes a long way, and do consider keeping cereals in stock. Me, I have fruit and fibre, and have a Berocca every morning. Keeps me topped up with vitiamins, and roughage. After that I can pretty much eat what I want!

Oh, and George Formby Grill is fantastic!!

Mr Mystery
06-07-2012, 11:41 AM
Oh, and on the subject of organic meat....Organic Chicken can be made excellent value for more money.

How? Well, I'm glad you ask!

One, procure the following....

1. Freezer (at the top, biggest investment)
2. Small, very sharp knife (no.....don't stab it in your eye...)
2a. Decent pair of kitchen/poultry scissors
3. The Interwebs (hurrah!)
4. The chicken (duh!)

Right. Freezer on? Good. That's kind of critical.

So, take the Interwebs, and look up how to joint a chicken (like so.... http://www.deliaonline.com/how-to-cook/chicken-and-other-poultry/how-to-joint-a-raw-chicken.html thankyou Auntie Delia, your kitchen cunning has made me a happy boy!)

Joint the chicken. Wrap in clingfilm (the chicken, not yourself) as individual portions, bung it in the freezer. Using your poultry scissors, cut down the remaining carcass, and also freeze. This can be used to make a stock, and should have enough meat left on it to make it worth picking off post stock-boiling.

Pow. You now have enough chicken for several meals, from a single carcass. What you do with it from here is limited by your own adventurous culinary nature. Hell, if you find a multibuy organic chicken (deals exist!) then when making stock, you can make loads, or a concentrated batch, and freeze some of it. Nothing is as tasty as home made stock!

Similarly, doing a good sunday roast with a good sized joint of beef, lamb or pork means you get a portion for your meal, then let it cool, slice it thin with a sharp knife, chuck in the fridge in a tupperware tub and you have great sandwich fillings for the next week or more. Or you can cook it againto make other quick meals. Much better value (and flavour!) than buying pre-packed, pre-sliced stuff or slices from Deli counters.

Rinse and repeat, and you're laughing. Oh, and always, ALWAYS have a plentiful supply of dried pasta and rice on hand. Got some left over meat? Heat up a tin of chopped tomatoes, add the mince, season to taste, enjoy with the pasta. One tasty low cost meal!

How do you do your rivets?

Mostly I be cuttin' up thin plastic rod. Stab the chunk wiv' me knife, dip in glue n stick to the model.

No idea why I tried to type with an accent there. For my orks I've used all sorts of plastic rod, from .25mm to .8 I think. Cut off a chunk no longer than the rivet is wide and use the very tip of the hobby knife to pick it up. Use superglue to attach it because the sintant hold pulls the rivet off the knife, which plastic glue wont so easilly. I tend to put a few drops of glue on a tile or something because when I used to try to save glue by holding the rivet close to the nozzle and letting a little bubble of glue form at the top, I lost a lot of rivets inside the glue bottle/tube.

As Agent said, hexagonal tubing also works well for nuts and bolt heads.

I'm going to put a tax on people who ride horses. "Have you been in a coma for the last century? People use cars now, stop slowing us all down and pay this tax to compensate us for our inconvenience."

I don't earn enough money to buy everything needed for a car. It's mainly insurance that's the killer.

By the way, I'm feeling a lot happier now. :)
