Demographics of 40kers

Hello,
I was on the GW blog today and I noticed this photo from the GW doubles weekend held a little while ago.

While looking for my mates on it, what struck me was that the people in the photo are almost exclusively white males, and it got me thinking does the game only appeal to that demographic or at least in the UK scene? Are there any facts figures/anecdotes relating to this distribution? And why perculiarly this group, or is it a case that this is the "classic geek" type and so are the natural market?

I dunno about ethnicity, but when i go to big games its almost exclusivly male. Thats just a fact and the way it seems to be round here

Whilst at Games Day last year, me and my friends only noticed 4 coloured people (seriously no offence intended!) this struck me as really peculiar.
Maybe the UK really only pulls a white crowd?

There is no actual data that I'm aware of. GW is very much a middle class+ hobby, and much of the middle class is white. However I'm a bit surprised at the entirely white lineup in that picture, it is only anecdotal but I'd say around here 20% of the playerbase is non-white. Ten percent are girls but I'm fairly sure that is aberrant.

In my entire time of playing 40K i've only ever played 1 person who wasn't white. And he was of Indian descent, but born in the UK.

Lot of Poles and a Eastern Europeans though...but thats just England for you

At the very bottom of the pic in the middle, green jumper on, that might be a "girl" :confused:

I wondered that myself, hard to tell though, could just be a fresh faced boy. There may also be someone with dark skin, Indian or Middle Eastern, centre left between two outstretched arms, face partially obscured by another arm. But it may just be my monitor/shadows.:rolleyes:

Here in Baltimore we have a real mixed bag of cultures playing. it is still predominatly white I'd say 14-40 year olds but the ratio is roughly about 5 to 1. in one or two store closer to the city i say it is more like 3-2. even in the GW i frequnet which is kinda rural we a have a few latino guys and a indian kid. not a minority per say but there was one nice kid who was deaf that i taught how to play. he had a space marine army and was fairly decent player i think he moved away though.

In my local gw, there are a mix of white males and females (girlfriends who got into the hobby), Asian men and women (including Indians etc) I fall into the Asian category so yeah, in Australia people of all different types of backgrounds are into the hobby.

Bit hard to judge based on that tiny picture. But I am a blonde, so +1 to Charisma there. Natural too so I don't get the -4 to Intelligence.
