Hey all,

Intro:
After getting back into the hobby a few months ago when i started my Dark Eldar army, which is now around 1500pts. I decided to go for a second army.
reason for this is that my wife also likes to play an occasional 40k game and with 1 army thats kinda hard. So i decided to go Crimson Fists.
Im not planning on speed painting this army like i usually do, but go for a high quality finish.

Motivation:
a) i really like the fluff around the chapter
b) i really sux at painting yellow ( so no imperial fists)
c) BA/BT/DA/vanilla... already done once
d) i really want to get a crack at painting darker blues.

Army
made a small donation to GW
1x spacemarine commander

The Start
To start off i made a test model, which will also be my commander for my army.
(first off i have to excuse myself for the crap pictures, im shooting with a really old camera, since my other one got stolen)

Head

For the skin im going for the reaper triad tanned skin
base - tanned shadow
layer1 - tanned skin
highlight - tanned highlight

This will give a slightly tanned (duh) skin which i think goes well with the blue armour of the Crimson Fists.

Planning for 20-05-2012:
Getting the head done. As i progress i will post pics on how it goes

Update on the head:
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/100_2820.jpg

i decided that the head needed a final highlight since he came out a bit to dark for my liking

C&C at this stage is also welcome :D

Head back

For the blue i went for the following way:
- base: Necron abyss
- layer: regal blue
- highlight: ultramarines blue

works pretty good and no need to fiddle around with washes or mixing complex colours , which makes it a joy to paint

Those are some great gifts indeed. :D

Just too bad it's a tank-less compressor... you are going to regret that. For a few coins extra you would have had one with a tank that would would have been an investment for decades. The inconsistency in pressure from a tank-less compressor will make you curse and swear like a drunken sailor in no-time... :-/

I prolly will have some regrets but i had this compressor - had to sell it because of financial difficulties- and really liked it. The noise will be a pain in the bum but i can deal with that.

Hehehehe didnt see it that way. may file them down and make some powerweapon nunchucks from them

Finally i can show you all some better pictures, my old camera didnt have a good macro function (auto macro) and since my new one has one (and a pretty good one too) i will be shooting loads of pics. And indeed getting to spend some cash on the hobby without having to keep rest of the financial commitments in mind is good. My local reseller was one happy camper

Been quite busy the last few days with the family so havnt had to much time to get some progress going.
I did some work on my dreadnought:
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_4680.jpg

And also started my own little papercraft project: im building a Thunderhawk out of paper and cardboard!
reason behind this is that i love the model and, had at one time in my life, a metal one. But now it think its a bit to expensive for me. So i used my google-fu and found a really nice detailed thunderhawk and decided to build it on a budget of "just" 50 euro's

time for a few pictures:
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_4673.jpg
Rear access hatch is completed now. using clothing pins as nails really works great, it not only serves it purpose as nails, but also strengthens the structure

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_4672.jpg
Started to work on the inside of the cabin. Im planning on making a hinged front ramp so detail is a big plus. Will be painted red as seen in most choppers .

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_4671.jpg
Side shot; just to give you an impression of how much detail there is in this papercraft kit.

Well thats all folks for today ... im off to work on a few bases i need to get ready for my 500points league

Simple goes a long way. You don't need crazy redonkulousness to make a great character. Sometimes all you need is a good pose, oh, and a skull face!

I have two metal Thunderhawks. They are tiny! So, I use them in my Rogue Trader fleet as heavy transports.

olberon

Put my thunderhawk project on hold for a few weeks. i decided to start off with the humble infantry before starting on anything bigger.

to have a good kickoff i started making 16 bases
* 10 man infantry
* 5 man scout
* 1 libbie/chaplain base

with working on my dread base that makes around 500 points, which ideally, should be done before Wednesday for the 500 points league we are running .

some pics of the finished bases:
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/group_3.jpg

olberon

finished my dread base. i really need to find a way to let the washes dry faster! a single base takes just too long to make
but anyhow... here are 2 pics of the base
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5301.jpg

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5308.jpg

Again industrial looks and since its a large base had some to to do a "ground pipe" experiment. Loks pretty and is really simple to fix so im going for this on my termie bases also.

Also started working on my dread -scrapped the old one- and after a really dodgy undercoat job, which is the climates fault not mine! i started to rust up the bloke
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5314.jpg

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5325.jpg

The general idea is to cover it with 2 layers of varnish and then a layer of hairspray, spray blue over it and then scrape the surface with an old brush
should look ace

Get some ear 'muffs'. You'll probably find them in the section of the hardware store where you find the shop vacs.
I, too, have a compressor without a tank. Oi! It provides entertainment, alright. If your definition of entertainment is swearing like a sailor.

@Leviathen: thanks alot, ill do my best

@Tynskel: fixed that problem really easy jut got some iso foam (the blue stuff) and placed my compressor on it!. went from 40Db to 20Db i live in a flat and when i airbrush in the middle of the night i dont get complaints and even my 4 month old son who sleeps next to the compressor -really thin walls dont count- sleeps through it like a ... well... baby

@Bulveye: The bases where a bit of a experiment but they worked, got so much likes on my Facebook page that im going to sell them as casts on ebay.

For those waiting for an update:

i already made my 6th edition liberian (seems like you cant leave home without one in this edition)

Since i messed up the paintjob on my first tactical squad, Yes the really need a full stripping job now. i had to make a new a whole new squad. Lucky me, i still have a few "spare" squads.

The good point is i know now how to paint the squad the markings etc.

So yesterday evening i got broke out the sprues and started to make the squad. here's the result.
dont mind some of the mould lines, they are being removed before the undercoat.

The pressmould shoulder icons are really fun to make i noticed that if you dont let the GS cure completely (just around 30 mins) its easier to bend it around the shoulderpad a little fast curing glue does the rest of the trick. Saves alot of cash and its actually fun to do

Plans for today are to remove last of the mould lines, undercoat the squad and give them at least one good coat of blue. Also i really need to get cracking at my thunderhawk project its falling behind

as real life had some priorities so i didnt get to do much but here are some results of what i did yesterday

First i layered on a layer of regal blue/ultra marine blue. im stil using old pots since a still have a bucketload of old ones.

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5786.jpg

After that i sprayed on a thin layer of Blue wash with some anti shine additive from reape, the stuff is great since it removes all the shiny stuff from your paints.

(result in next post)

and the full squad
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_5851.jpg

I also made a base for my red, since i really hate the old red foundation paint im using my own mix of scab red/ dark flesh and scorched brown on top of that i brushed on a layer of devlan mud/ogrynflesh and baal red. this mix tends to get a a bit purple but thats what im aiming for (blue+ red= purple)

just a quiky for now.....

Yesterday i finally finished this squad after painting it on and off for almost 2 weeks.
after i was done i went about my business and went outside for a quick coat of varnish. result ALL of my models got the feared FROSTY look.... Im a very sad panda now.

So i tried everrything.
apply a gloss varnish and respray them - no result
dunk them in a bath of nailpolish remover/ water - no result

so after that i decided to do the only thing left to do, strip them and start over.......

a big lesson os to be learned for me, never ever ever ever use varnish again if it comes in spray container
next batch im going to varnish using my airbrush! or even leave the varnish off!

Meph
07-04-2012, 01:43 PM
Ah crap, frosting sucks bigtime! Especially if a gloss coat doesn't fix it. I've learned it the hard way as well to either test on one model first or just use the airbrush. :(

Good luck on the repaint, mate!

So after screwing up 20 space marines i needed to get them clean so i could start over again with them. As i dont have cash hanging from trees and the hobby is quite expensive i decided to clean them. Like we all know we have a few options to choose from but i choose to go for the brake fluid way, im allergic to Dettol/simple green so that was not an option, thats why i chose to go for brake fluid. Its nearly odourless works great on plastic mini's and best of all. After you are done you can use hot soapy water to get the greasy effect of your mini's.

A word of warning tho: and i cant stress it enough, USE LATEX GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION the stuff is quite nasty if you happen to get in an wound or your eyes so please use it.

Tools needed:

Brake fluid - any brand will do but im using Castrol (see pic)
Glass jar - eat your peas and get a present ;)
Latex gloves and eye protection - really needed i cant tell you guys enough
Toothbrush - dont use your mom's/wife's/brothers/sisters/room-mates brush they wont like you
Soom srewed up models - duh!!!

http://www.warhammerpaintservice.nl/blog2/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG_6051.jpg

After you gathered your tools lets get cracking
Fill the jar with fluid, dunk in your models and give them a good soak for at least 10 hours, really depending on the layers of paint and undercoat to strip away.
After the soak, get your toothbrush and gloves and start scrubbing. If you cant see what your doing dunk your model back in the jar for a second and continue.

Then if you are done, make a nice soapy bath for your mini's (im using a combination of window cleaner for cars and washing up liquid) give them a soak for 10 minutes and then give them a luke warm rinse of water. Now just let them dry. Since its a really sunny day over here im using sunlight

here is the end result of just 1.5 hours of scrubbing and soaking (excluding the soak in brake fluid)

http://www.warhammerpaintservice.nl/blog2/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG_6047.jpg

Still waiting to dry but once dried just undercoat them and start painting again !!!

+++ Quick update +++

After a discussion with my wife -lucky me she plays warhammer too- we discovered that i was taking the wrong path for the blue on my crimson fist army. We sat down this morning and came up wit ha totally new paint scheme after destroying a few more models, lucky me, there is always brake fluid !

+++BLUE+++
1. Undercoat black
2. Basecoat Necron Abyss Foundation. (airbrush)
3. Highlight Edges with Ultramarine Blue
4. Generous Wash of Leviathan Purple over entire mini.
5. Paint metalic areas with Boltgun.
6. Wash entire mini with Badab Black
7. Apply another highlight of Ultramarine Blue on extreme edges.

+++RED+++
1. Undercoat black
2. Basecoat Mechrite Red
3. Wash with Devlan mud
4. 1st Highlight Red Gore
5. 2nd Highlight Blood Red

Since im having a ton of old pots left im still using the "old colours".

In this new paint scheme ill be using my airbrush a lot less, which in turn makes the neighbours a lot happier. Had some complains i was using my airbrush in the middle of the night hahahaha.

Now lets get painting! ill be posting some pics during my progress today

Does DOT 4 not leave the very top layer of detail a little soft though? i have tried it in the past, and it softened (not melted) the eyes and grilles of the marines and kinda made them smooth.

if you can get it in the states try fairy power spray, its just high power fairy liquid (i think) it foams up and turns into a runny/foamy gel, it strips plastic, resin and metals without hassle in the same manner as the DOT 4 (tooth brush and soaking). the only 'issue' i have had is a set of tacticals i had sprayed 8+ years ago were stained black (no paint left on them sfter scrubbing, just the plastic was black.... kind cool)

im really liking your bases though..... making me kick myself for buying resin ones :)

I didnt have any trouble with Dot4 just as long as you give it a good rinse with water or in my case window cleaner for cars .

I dont believe i can get my hands on the fairy stuff (located in holland) the second best thing is dettol (the stuff that makes hospitals smell funky and makes my eyes and nose bleed, yes it really does!) so im sticking to DOT4 for the moment :P

Bases are really easy to make, and discovered that with the cash i would buy 50 bases for my army i can in theory make 150 bases, and im a cheapskate so i went for the local solution.

so my camera got jacked, my modem decided it couldnt stand cat pee and my health isnt just what it used to be.... Thats what i had to deal with the past few weeks.

Lucky me... the modem was quickly fixed (just took my ISP 2 weeks to get one over here, while i live across the streek of the distribution center of the blasted things)

the camera was quickly replaced by the insurance company.

The last few weeks ive been busy painting my army tho, i had plenty of time (the old ticker needed some rest and painting relaxes me)
so here are a few pics of my progress... (beware due to pic limits ill be posting in several replies to myself)

After having a small painting disaster with my last bath of scouts i decided to go for a landspeeder to keep my moral up. I wanst too happy about how the blue turned out on the scouts but more about that later...........

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/Crimson%20Fists/IMG_7279.jpg

Now back to the scout disaster:
The problem is that i am using Leviathan purple to wash my models to blend in the sloppy highlights and give the army a slight purplish hue, Imo the more you go to the red spectrum for Crimson fists the better. Since im running out of Leviathan Purple -i only have half a pot left- i bought a pot Druchii Purple but that purple shade just doesnt do it for me - again this could be me-

If you have any suggestions for this problem i really love to hear it from you guys.

For now, May the emperor bless you and may his light be true

Awesome model, I love the scope on the Plasma pistol, nice touch. Am sure I will look sweet painted up.

Nice work on the chaplain and the scope looks cool, the only thing i have to say is the coils would melt the scope and ruin the pistol also, i suggest moving the scope to the rear of the casing. BA83
