Since 2008 we have danced the dance with 5th edition, but pretty soon we will be dancing the fandago with 6th. How will you personally remember 5th and what defines it for you?

What do you say to 5th Ed as you kick it out the door?

"We've changed..."
"It's not you its me, I just dont like rhinos and melta any more..."
"I feel smothered by your overly generous cover saves"

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. ;)

Oh, and cover saves -> Get away from her you bit*h!

My best memory of 5th edition?

Cookie cutter lists.

I hate them.

My comment to 5th before it's swept under the rug, is:

"Thank you! For motivating me to finally try some of those other amazing game systems out there!"

As for 6th? 6th what? All 6th will bring is *yet another* jumbled mess. GW's habit is not to improve the rules of the previous edition(s), but rather just fix a few things and mess up a few more.

I'm curious - despite obviously making you cooler than the rest of us, what did 5th edition do to you that made you leave 40k?

To 5th edition:

F*&% Off.

And take my Tyranids that you broke with you.

Wait.. are we talking about 5th edition or Robin?

Dear 5th Edition,

When I first saw you on that warm summer's morn, I fell in love. You were everything I wanted in an edition and more. However, as time marched on, I grew weary of you. Where there was once joy, there is now only apathy. We had a great time together and shared many great memories. Yet now in the winter of your life, I feel drawn to other games and, unfortunately, your sister - 6th Edition. I hope it's not weird that I'm going to start dating your sister. She's wonderful and beautiful. She embodies the hope and optimism I used to share with you. Like so many other break up letters, I have to say it's not you, it's me. I grew up and am now looking for a more meaningful relationship. I hope you can, in the years to come, understand why I am doing this. It is for the best.

Regards,

Chuck777

I hope this is goodbye, but I'm afraid that I might want you back someday.

As we part, I'd slip a small envelope into 5th's pocket:

Dear 5th Edition

As you are reading this, I will be gone. Fighting battles on distant worlds, hiding behind cover properly, moving around the battlefield in a tactical manner, and heroicly standing against all the odds, fighting tooth and nail to the last man.

you were a kind edition, always clean and well presentable, although you never pulled any punches, games were cut tragically short, and if we did argue, you would only let me win with only the most technical of wins, if ever. You lived life on an ever increasingly fast plane. to begin with you were slow and calm, but now you rush around the board, leaping tall buildings with single bounds, and sweeping whole units off the table before I had a chance to play with them.

but it's not you who have torn us apart. it's your new friends. they're turning you into something you're not. they've got you taking all sorts of drugs, spouting strange things and contradicting yourself.

There is something else...

I've found someone new, someone.. different. this may be hard to hear, but 6th edition just shook my world up enough to make life interesting again. although looking through facebook i've noticed that you and 6th share the same friends. I hope that 6th outgrows them, and replaces them with more fun friends, who don't do drugs.

I like/d 5th. Clean, concise, fun.

Best edition of 40K so far.

I just hope 6th won't make a mess of it all.

what did 5th edition do to you that made you leave 40k?

Bluntly put, it removed everything I enjoyed about playing this game. I found it particularly frustrating to have unit options and my favorite sub-factions stripped away (and effectively squatted), simply because the army I loved "are not marines". 5th ed in general was not very kind to non-imperial armies, with noted exceptions to the Dark Eldar and Necrons.

On a side note regarding your 'cool' comment, I could honestly care less about what screen-names on the internet think of me.

Out of curiosity, which one of your armies got "Squatted?"

I was able to put together every one of my Eldar craftworld lists in 5th so I'm honestly curious.

Sure you do. That's why you posted your original comment with the typical PP fanboy talking points.

5th ed, you were better than 3rd + 4th, and much more streamlined than 2nd. I enjoyed you while you lasted, I am sorry that you seemed to have an optimal build (melta spam) but that is more of peoples perviceved greatness of tanks vs. anything else. Also, how many purifiers have you got in your list

Wrong again. I don't play Warmahordes, nor will I.

Please note, that I did say "effectively squatted". They still exist... in color-scheme example only.
I played Goff and Deathskulls. Either way, the Clans are dead. The current Ork codex does an abysmal job of representing the clans, and is very bland and flavorless in that regard. To summarize, my Goffs dropped from 1850 to 1k, and got donated due to an extreme drop in CC performance (unless I wanted to be a tool and spam wound-abuse nobs). And the Deathskulls were shelved when Lootas were blandified to "d3-shot Autocannons".

The real killer for me, was the way 5e panned out. I personally did not find much enjoyment in playing 5e and it's excessive emphasis on mech, melta, and "everything plus the kitchen-sink" 5e codex design philosophy. The Space Wolf, Blood Angel, and Grey Knight codices also proved excessively unenjoyable to play against, win or lose.

it's got it's good points and bad points. just try to resolve the assaulting walkers/vehicles conflict, tweak deepstrike and make some of the other rules make sense and we're good to go.

As someone who played 2nd, 3rd and 5th but took a break during 4th, I think the 5th edition codex is the best book the IG has had. Sorry, not quite on topic but since the Guard are the only army I have ever played, I have a bias in favor of 5th as a whole. I wonder though, is some of the dissatisfaction with the current game actually more of a unhappiness with certain army books? It does appear to me that going back to 4th edition there was more of a vanilla flavor to the codexes and the more recent trend has been to release super-charged books (codex creep) that has created frustration for some folks with older books. Just my opinion, flawed though it may be due to the fact that I never played 4th edition.

Hey, over abundant 4+ cover save, don't let the door hit you on the way out. And bring that TLOS friend whith you when you leave.

Wound allocation, you've been unfriended on FB. Actually, we were never friends.

Vehicle damage table. You got a future my boy, Stick around and we can go places.

Dawn of War deployment. Not nice knowing you.

Oh Dark Angels 'dex, wherefore art though

It's a mixture of imbalanced codexes and an over-familiarity with the system and how to maximize everything to your advantage.

The early years of 5th were good to us Bugs. We had cover saves and a solid codex. Then Crudface came along and ruined everything.

Dear GW and 5th edition...

Thank you for neglecting to provide Tau players with a 5th ed codex.

Thank you for making gun drones count towards unit losses which cause morale checks, failures, and fleeing 18" off of the table edge every time.

Thank you for dictating to me what my imagination can handle or what my miniatures should look like (my mods look more like what the codex fluff is supposed to look like than the actual GW models do)

Thank you for finally providing us with a Marbo model (even though he just looks like a standard catachan)

Thank you for getting rid of the Daemon Hunters codex. It was too fun and interesting to go on existing.

Thank you for nerfing Sisters of Battle and making them the weakest and most disinteresting codex I have ever had the privilege of reading in an edition of white dwarf.

Thank you for reminding me that I can make my own terrain, better, more interesting, functional, durable, and cheaper than I could ever find in a GW product.

That you for making the assault phase the most convoluted and confusing and obfuscating process I have ever experienced...

Ok, I'm done. I could go on, but my bile duct is a bit low and I need to recharge...

Dear 5th Edition,

I didn't play you that much as I am more a painter than a player. I enjoyed the few games we had together though. Even though I look forward to 6th Edition, I have a feeling that many will pine for your return in the face of confusing rulesets and Mat Ward fluff.

Dear 5th Edition,
I have Mrs 5th edition tied to a chair, if 6th edition doesn't deliver a balanced, fun to play Eldar codex within twelve months she will be shot and buried in a ditch somewhere.
Yours faithfully, Eldargal.
