Decided to take the plunge with necrons to make an army I've wanted for a while - Mechanicum

First model my supersize knight titan counst as monolith (you may have seen the WIP thread before).

First model with the new paints, pretty impressed so far.

Very impressive, very impressive indeed! I can't wait to see what you do for the regular troops and other vehicles! Using the Titan was the perfect substitute for a Monolith!

Yeah, the tomb stalker is somewhere in the ballpark of 92 different pieces of resin, which while a pain in the ***, can lead to some awesome possibilities with dynamic posing. It is such a cool model, and I like the creative use of it here.

I found I had to use a lot of green stuff + super glue, and I wound up assembling/posing it in 4-segment chunks at a time, then getting all the legs in there as quick as possible while my green/glue cement cured.

Nice use of the kit here - creative counts-as lord. :)

And the Titan turned out great. My only qualm is that it looks more impressive than the rules will allow it to be, as a counts-as Monolith.

Warriors are going to be based on servitors

Immortals are dark angels with immortal torsos/arms and extended GS robes. Still at early stage.

Scarabs are trimmed from the ghost ark

Started painting my destroyer lord. Marble is a particularly tricky effect to get right.

My annhialation barge based on the dreadknight (not a kit that is easy to repose). I am enjoying the fusion of necron and imnperial designs.

Holy crap that 'Annihilation Barge' is awesome.

Seems like a better stand-in for the Triarch Stalker, in my opinion - just because of the walker appearance. Hard to imagine that thing not hitting back in close combat.

Regardless - still a very, very cool conversion.

I demand step by steps on the dreadknight.

isotope99
05-11-2012, 04:20 PM
Legs were chopped above second joint and reassembled. Had to use a fair amount of green stuff as the kit doesn't admit easy reposing of the legs (couldn't quite get it to fully kneel down with the size of the feet). The ironclad's banner also helps cover the waist area.

Gun is the tesla destructor extended with extra barge parts. Not thrilled with the pistol but couldn't find a good spot for the secondary weapon.

Trimming and green stuff allows the shooting pose but again the joints don't easily go into that position.

Necron engine balls and incinerator tanks on the shoulders make the prototype custom void shield projector (AKA quantum shielding)

The head is leftover from the tomb stalker merged in with green stuff.

The wraith kit provides lots of spare eye lenses and other experimental gubbinz to cover up any rough green stuff work.

This isn't quite finished but is 90% there.

Hot damn dat annihilation mech, the head looks amazing on it. Major props on the mosquito too, a lot of the new bits which looked weird on Necron models look kickass on these Mechanicus ones.

One note on the Destroyer Lord - overall awesome, but the point where the Stalker and Techmarine cables meet looks pretty choppy, maybe add an armourplate or tabbard to cover it?

This army looks fantastic and will surely surpass your previous thousand sons army. I absolutely love the flyer! You should just make an army of 9 of those beasts (like the 9 ringwraiths lol).

The only thing that puts me off is the first model (which is also awesome) is that it looks too clean, Most machines of the mechanicus are often described as dirty oil covered machines but it looks like it could fall in with your 1k sons.

I'd recommend you look into some weathering or dirt effects.

TOMB SPYDERS ON THE CHEAP

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03592.JPG

Ingredients:

1 wraith sprue
1 monster or large flying base
(optional) spare scarabs

1. Assemble lower two body sections as normal but trim and flip the top torso section, leaving off the larger carapace.

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03591.JPG

2. Position legs in reverse order (there are more sockets than legs so you can choose which holes to use)

Don't glue to base until after painting and leave the big claws unglued so you can flex the pose later.

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03593.JPG

3. Fill in extra sockets with power orbs, head etc.

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03594.JPG

Garnish with extra scarabs from the ghost ark or warrior kit if you wish and serve.

It's almost finished painting and looking pretty good so far, the new paints make red so much easier. Sadly the binary has no meaning, just a random string of zeros and ones, same with the barcodes.

Here's my take on the storm talon assault walker:

(credit to MBG for being first http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2012/06/hobby-stormtalon-assault-walker.html)

I wanted to do it with just two kits (plus a bit of GS and plasticard), the storm talon and dreadknight and I almost made it, plus the ravenwing assault cannons/searchlights and Ironclad banner I already had, which are optional.

It's shorter than the original in the link without the defiler legs but more solidly built IMHO.

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03626.JPG

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/576/DSC03625.JPG

Don't ask me how I'm going to fit it into this army, I think I'll add a teleporter array and teleporting servitor (AKA necron warrior) and try to pass it off as a ghost ark. Triarch stalker makes most sense but the footprint is wrong and I can't squeeze that in to my target army.

Once I've painted it I'll do a family photo of Daddy bear, Mummy bear and Baby bear with all three walkers ;)

Rev. Tiberius Jackhammer

Maybe use it as a Tomb Stalker? Although the guns don't really match up.

I would have it count as a C'tan lord. You can give him the two assault gun powers. Blast weapon for the missiles and 8 shot gun for the assault cannons. Stompy Stompy for CC.

Amazing stuff mate loving the bigger bots! Nice effect with the ghost ark look forward to seeing it painted.

Just remember mate best to keep the army simple so people don't get confused like they did with that kroot player at TOS. I ran into the exact same problem with my own Mechanicus Cybernetica army; The Zanatorian Machine Cult (http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2009/364/0/a/0a2456229b6b66303d033393d95fd6fd.jpg)

It's unfortunate that you've already built your Scarabs as I would have asked if you'd be interested in adopting my favoured Mechanicus Steel Scorpions (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/data/2/Zanatorian_Scorpions.jpg) for you Scarabs, anyway let me know what you think?

isotope99
06-18-2012, 06:09 AM
I know I know. It's a potential problem and some of these models I admit are pushing the boundaries just a bit. I'm making a one page map of the units with pictures and doing labels from movement tray rims too, so I hope that'll cover it.

There's also a certain internal consistency, the optional weapons will be right, they're on the right bases, and all the slow skimmers are replaced with walkers.

Army looks great and conversions are brilliant.

Any chance you could give us feedback on the various reactions from players trying to play against that army? I would have a hard time figuring out how the heck some of that stuff fires in the same way the Necron GW Vehicles do.

Had no real problems. There were a couple of fire arc/ rear armour arc issues, but nothing not easily resolved.

In terms of identification, the combination of an army list with pictures and labels on the bases of the vehicles covered most of it.

90% of the guns are correct (only the big walkers are wrong).

Would i be correct in thinking that the little broken fencing at the front of the 'Monolith' represents the Portal with regards to spawning and shooting it?

Correct, not that I used it much.

These are extremely good, they look great on the table. I wish I was half as good at converting. Nice!

Awesome stuff mate, so how did you get on at Throne Of Skulls?

Won 4 games out of 5, which is a record for me but all the necrons were doing well, and wasn't a million miles away in the one I lost to another necron list. No major problems with WYSIWYG identification but I did put a lot of effort into that.

Got best hero in the painting competition (destroyer lord dismantling the wraithlord) which I've not won before but missed out on best army to a haemonculus coven DE list.

I'm probably going to take them again in October and tweak the list slightly with a couple of new models.

New necro model,

I'm retiring the tres dodgy ghost ark in favour of some more warriors (incoming) and a new annihilation barge, my take on the Kaban Machine.

I've also grimed up all my models with the new technical paints.

I like the ingenious use of bitz on the tentavle arms - especially the drill! I almost feel the model is a little dark though - maybe it is the picture? Looks great nonetheless!

Weeeeeeeeee :D

That dirty beasty makes for a very happy Shades! Exactly what I thought your army could look like! I look forward to seeing how the rest of the army looks (though it does mess up the reserve article I've been slowly putting together on my blog...)

Some of the others with extra grime. Reflects less light so much less shiny.

Absolutely Awesome!
I'm building a CSM Army at the moment, combining Chaos & Necron & SM parts. But I'm way behind your skill.

Some great work here!

And a question: looking at the first picture of WIP scarabs (page 1) I spotted a somewhat larger skull (front row, second base from the left) which I didn't recognize - where is it from?
