View Full Version : Worst deployments you've ever seen

This thought just came to mind after playing a game this morning. I had someone block up their scarabs in a perfect 2x4 block next to a great piece of cover knowing full well I was playing a mordrak list with a warp rift libby.
Came in turn 1 with no scatter, templated all 8 of them off of the board. Tears wept, etc.
What are some examples of some deployment you've either seen or done that just makes you go... seriously?

Worst I ever did was intentional ly deep strike adread within charge range of a big unit of wraithguard, the first time I ever played against them, in an ardboyz game. Much chuckling was had around the room.

Dunno if it counts....but I once saw a game between 2 Identical (literally point for point) Necron lists in Spearhead.
They both knew that if they moved forward, they'd still be out of range, but then the opponent could move forward and be in range.
So neither of them did anything. For 7 turns. They just sat in Opposite corners and didn't move....

I've never seen anything catastrophically stupid, but playing with outflanking stealers and broodlord is always fun. I've seen opponents cram themselves into the middle of the board to avoid them, I've seen people sticking their best units right out the flanks to combat it and I've seen people spilt their armies in half and leave a big gap in the centre to try to save half their army. All failed quite badly.

Once saw someone play a fluffy White scars army and kept everything in reserve. (So, all bikes and all, He had no droppods).
Then the other player, playing Tau, deployed a massive infiltrating army of Kroot along the board edge all round, and kept them there for the remainder of the game.
Clearly, no points scored and a draw... but it was funny to see though

Wasn't that from ETC last year and the guy scored a win since units that can't be deployed counts as destroyed.

Sounds like a real heart-stopper of a game. Close to the very end. Smart generalship or dick move?
You decide.

Smart, dickish generalship, in my view. =P

I've seen a Blood Angels player who just deployed Mephiston, leaving the rest of his army in reserve. By luck, more than judgement, his opponent managed to kill him in the first turn. After that the remainder of his army came in from reserve piecemeal and was destroyed without him getting a single kill point. He then got a rematch, Mephiston survived the first turn and he won, so I could see why he did it. Just very reliant on Mephy....

Anything spearhead is usually grounds for getting my forces tabled by turn 3.
But... I made a HUGE mistake playing Tau against IG once...once. I had EVERYTHING in reserves, save for my lone commander hiding in a building. He fired his manticore at him and instant death'd 'im. Tabled me on turn one.
My face was the saddest face you've ever seen on a grown man. I probably looked like a 3 year old with his ice cream just fell off his cone and into the mud... Bad times.
Of course in retrospect after looking at the rules, unless manticores are firing directly, they always land on the top level of any structure and should NOT have killed my HQ. But I digress.

Panxer, even if he killed your general you weren't tabled until all of your units were destroyed, else you wouldn't be allowed to deploy everything into reserves. Your units in reserve are still alive, they just haven't deployed yet. As long as any of them can legally deploy, you are not tabled yet.
As for the Biker/Kroot story, I've heard that one several times. If I remember correctly, the first time I ever heard about it was clear back in 4th edition and it was pretty infamous--I believe at that time, it was being attributed to a ArdBoyz mission with deployment rules similar to what we now call Dawn of War. And my opinion: Poor generalship on the part of the White Scars player. In a tournament setting, you should always play to win. If someone did that to me (and I was the Tau player) at a major tournament, where I could reasonably assume someone knew the rules for deployment and reserves, then I would capitalize on it as well and refuse to budge. My opponent should know the rules, and should at minimum ask about possible options in my codex to defeat that strategy. Asking is never a bad idea for such a simple deployment, even in a tournament setting. And refusing to talk about your army capabilties as far as straight unit abilities go really IS an unforgivable dick move.

Quite liked the dark eldar force that deployed as far forwards as possible in their deployment zone in front of our guard and blood angels mech alliance. Virtually every flier went down turn 1. Felt sort of bad though.
This was a fourth edition game. In that edition you could win an assault and consolidate into a whole new assault. I was playing Ulltramarines, the opponent Tau. He deployed his army spread out over his side of the table, but the units were still about 6 inches from eachother. Turn 1 some of his crisis suits jumped up to blast a unit. They did some damage, but didn't fall back enough. The assault squad attacked them turn one...it then proceeded to kill almost every unit in the opponents army. His units just could't get far away enough from the assault marines. the rest of my army hid behind walls and played Cee-Lo.
I hope 6th cures some problems going on with 5th, but I was very happy with 5th as opposed to 4th. While I won that game, there was this empty feeling...

While playing in at battlefield games in Killeen last year , A tau player deployed spearhead with broadsides, battle suits, hammerheads, etc. even though we rolled pitch battle. I had 2 CSM Defilers sitting in the opposite corner on terrain. I seized, like a boss, and had a good day [:. str 10 large blast goodness [: P.S Dont ask why i had two defliers haha

For me, the last game in a tournament a long time ago, playing nidzilla against Tau, I deployed in cover in a corner. For some reason I was expecting him to come to me. Duh, what was I thinking? Clearly not on this planet at the time. When I realised my mistake, I couldnt roll more than 3 for move through cover. Shot to pieces and rightly so.
Using a BA JP army against GK in a recent tournament. I wasnt expecting to win - my first GK army, and
3 objectives, pretty much in a line in the middle of the board. DoW, he fielded first, put all his guys into T1 reserve. I put my scouts in a building next to the left hand objective, a unit behind cover in the centre, and rest DS reserve. T1 he brought on 2 DreadKnights opposite the scouts, and pretty much the rest of his army on the other flank. I didnt do much except pop at the DKs. T2, expecting to sacrifice the scouts holding up the DKs, I DSed all around his left flank. T3 on he headed his DKs over to the left flank to support his troops, completely ignoring the objectives. The scouts held their objective uncontested, took pop shots at his DKs, and won the day.

I'm a long time Tau player and the first time I played Space Wolves we were in spearhead and capt/control. I deploy in my corner and he deploys all the way back in his. Thunder cav miss.launcher team all the goodies all 48" +/- from me and he had 2 drop pods which I easily took care of when they landed. Short story was a tabling by top of 4. And he wasn't a newbie. He told me afterwards he didn't realize how much long range shooting I had. I was like that's what we do. I was heavy xv88's and fireknives with a lot of kroot.
