For the first time in about 8 months I've started painting one of my own projects; Ultramarines. I finished the first squad up a couple days ago, so here's a few photos showing how they're turning out. Comments? Criticism? Questions?

I like them. My only squabble is everyone is crouching. I like to have everyone as different as possible so my army looks unique. But that is my nion only. The paint job is top notch. Bravo

they look great. I love that you adhered to the codex perfectly for there markings. helms and all most people seem to miss that one for the Sargent.
also the bits of freehand really make them great

Really very good, though isn't a veteran sergeant supposed to have a Red helmet with white Laurels? Only the 1st Company veterans have white helmets.

Actual painting is absolutely top notch though, especially love the freehand numbering. Nice to see someone doing the 5th Company for a change :)

Thanks for the comments. Yes, "typically" a sergeant will have a red helmet. Since I'm paying homage to the mid 90's red era of painting (when I started out) with the red weapons I decided I really didn't want red helmets on sergeants. Plus I think the white helmets here and there really looks better. I'll most likely go with red helmets on terminator sergeants though, since the rest will have white....wait and see what I decide to do when I get that far.

The devastator squads will all be kneeling since they are holding a position; heavy weapons providing covering fire, and bolter dudes to cover them. Other squads will be different. I'll hopefully have pics up of more within the next few days.

Glad you're liking them!

You can just say that the dev sgt bit it, and one of the vets stepped in from a vanguard squad to lead the freshly minted devistators.

Awesome Warriors of Ultramar good sir!

No need, C:SM is very clear on the "typically" red bit. The next two helmets indicate veterans will vary between white and blue, so there's plenty justification for not doing red in fluff. As long as it's Ultramarines' colors, it's fine.

Besides, the red helmet on the squad leader just reinforces the whole smurfs image(pappa smurf). What's next, round tents with conical, over hanging roofs that happen to look like mushrooms? :D

Rather than start a new topic, I decided to resurrect this one. I managed to finish this army in time for The Alamo 40K Gt this past weekend. The entire army was painted between 4/16/12 and 5/17/12. As of 5/1, I had one squad finished and a second in progress. Between 5/7 and 5/17 I assembled and painted the drop pod, and 52 infantry models. Lack of sleep and over-consumption of caffeine were involved. The late nights paid off though; I received my second Best Painted Army award, and won 3rd in the Player's choice competition. Since I was trying to win best painted, and enjoy a weekend of meeting new gamers and rolling dice (with a smattering of adult beverages thrown in for good measure) the effort was a resounding success! Without further ado, here's some photos...at least a few. I tried posting everything and was told I am limited to 4 images; so here's a taste of what the models look like. If you want more, then say so!

A couple 1st squad tactical marines with their sergeant. yep, 25 other tactical marines not pictured....they look....well, just like these! nuff said

Sssshhhh! Don't piss off these Librarians! Ultramarines Librarian with Gate of Infinity and Null Zone. Only got to use Gate at the Alamo: its HILARIOUS to see the look on their face when suddenly a bunch of terminators "bamf" across the table into their lines! The other is an Exorcist Chapter Librarian seconded to the Deathwatch, with Null Zone and Machine Curse.
