Yes, once again my brain has been coming up with daft ideas. This time though I can at least blame a couple of my friends including our very own DrLove42. On with the meat and 'taters of my 'plan';

So you think you are a pretty hot 40k gamer? You win all the local tournies, even place at national GTs? So much so, you don't play pick up games without warning your opponant that your army has been registered as a deadly weapon? OK, so I might be taking this too far...

You are the Master of your army, your list and your style of play. But what about when using a list that you haven't honed? What about using other armies?

At the close of a recent tournament, a mutual friend, DrLove and I were wondering how we would fair using each others lists. This got my synapses firing and came up with a plan to test which of us is truely the best player.
(Note; at all the tournaments we have attended together so far, I have always placed lowest, DrLove is usually in the middle and the other guy usually places somewhere around the top 5, so I think the actual result is a foregone conclusion)

The basic premise would be that we would all write a list for one of our armies, then play against both of the other players, both using the army lists they didn't write using the army lists we didn't write. That sounds a little complicated, so I'll show you in a table/list of games.

So Player 1 writes List A. Player 2 writes List B and Player 3 writes List C;

-----3A---3B---2C---2A
1B--II----XX---II-----II
1C--II----II----XX----II
2A--XX---II
2C--II----II

So II is a game, and XX are games that can't happen because both players would need to be using the same list. The suggested game schedule would be;

Day 1

1B v 2C
LUNCH
2C v 3A
3A v 1B

Day 2

2A v 3B
LUNCH
3B v 1C
1C v 2A

Day 3

3A v 1C
LUNCH
1B v 2A
2C v 3B

Scoring is fairly normal, except that you also get points for when your army wins a game, to stop people writing weak lists that cannot compete.

4 Points for a win
3 Points for a 'home' win against your own army
2 Points for a draw
1 Point when your army wins a game
0 Points when you lose (of course you'll still get a point when you lose against your own list)

What do you guys think? This could be expanded for more players, but the number of games increases exponentially with each one added. How do you think you would manage in such a competition?

people playing with other people models . yeah right like this is going to happen. I can only envision those . "losing" one model [best be HQ] and unit becomes illegal DQ in all matches after the army owners list . destruction of models[indended or not] makes people rage quit. messing up parings .
team play breaks up everything . one dude comes with a draw or unplayable list to rise the chance of wins for his team .

ah and meq players have it easier. switching froma SW razor spam to a puri razorspam is not a big change . switching from nids or necron to something else is .

He did mention that it was him and a couple friends.

Less likely to have "disappearing" models that way.

Oh yeh this deffinitely would work for an open tournament. At any scale it would have to be an invitation only kinda of thing where everyone was trusted. While breaking models is still a possibility, most player who have been to a tournament know that it WILL happen at some point, no matter how careful you are. But so long as everyone is respectful, it shouldn't be an issue. I've yet to see anyone actually rage quit because of it; nothing more than an appology, shaking hands and offering of the use of the breaker's glue! Maybe things are less civilised in your area, jeske?

Once upon a yesteryear I did attend an open, 400 point 40k-in-40-minutes event 8 or 9 years ago where you played a game with your army and 3 games with a randomly drawn army. No one lost any models, although there were a couple of inevitable breakages.

As for certain builds being similar and thus easier to swap across too, that is certainly true, but also means more people will know their weaknesses and how to exploit them. If it is your list, you should deffinitely be aware of it's vulnerabilities. Given that you will play against each army list twice (if you have 3 players) knowing how to exploit it's weaknesses would give you a massive advantage, and even more so if you then come up against another very similar list. For the example of me and my mates, I play guard as does one of the other lads. Even then I tend to be a tank heavy force where as he goes for valkyries and artillery. Other than that the different armies we could possibly field are really diverse and play very differently, so we wouldn't have to worry abour Razorspam. Actually, I think between us we have a single Razorback. And she doesn't get out of her case for much besides Apocolypse games.

I feel sorry for you if your gaming group can't be trusted to touch your models without you in fear of them breaking or stealing them.

The 3 armies we're using is DE, Marines and Deamons. All quite different....
