View Full Version : New Dark Angels Plastics in 40K Paint Set?

The 40k starter paint set picture has changed from Ultramarines to DA. Looking at the picture is seems that the DA chapter symbol is moulded on.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1490027a

But the actual miniatures look the same as the old ones, just green instead of blue!

Interesting that the chapter in the set has changed with the rumours of DA being in the upcoming new starter set...

Nice catch, just more reason to trust what we are hearing.

If you look close, the DA winged symbol appears to be sculpted on, as well as the sideways Tac symbol. Not only that, they are not Eavy Metal level with shading and such, but look like you can actually paint them with only what is provided in the box.

Note also that the specific paint colors in that "starter set" are specificlly set for Dark Angels.
And here I sit with 42 Deathwing Termies all painted (in my purple chapter color of course) eagerly waiting the new codex.

Ohhh. I see what you did there GW.
I hope that is coming sooner than this summer D:!

And @KellyJ: 42 Termis, that's the right amount of them. No more. No less.

My DA collecting friend will be pleased with this bit of info!

Yay! This will hopefully be a lovely codex...

But what do people feel will make them diffrent to the Codex Marines, I mean Ravenwing and Deathwing make them pretty diffrent, but will they add more deviance in to this codex?

Otherwise I can see people arguing even more adamently for a "combined" Space Marine codex.

could be that these models are what we may see in the 6th edition starter box set.

I think if Dark Angels are in the starter box it will lend a lot of credence to the idea of Dark Angels getting rolled up into the vanilla Marine codex a month or two afterwards, because when have we ever had a box set where one of the sides wasn't vanilla Marines?

(Yes, I know we had Black Templars in the 3rd Edition box, but that was two years before Codex: Armageddon made them different)

I'm not convinced from that picture that the DA details are sculpted on.

I agree with you chicky, seem to be decals to me on plain stock pads. But the shift in colour scheme is notable...weather it is a sign of things to come or not is fairly weak though.

And I can't believe they'd put a specific chapter of marines in the starter box like that rather than just generic marines like in every other starter

The Marines look very similar to the Black Reach starter set Marines and the shoulder pads don't look that sculpted.. It could be transfers.

Having said that, shaving off the right shoulder pads from the Black Reach starter set Marines is a lot of work just to add the arrow in a different direction. and even then GW doesn't normally put 'converted' models on the front of boxes, only the ones you can actually make in the set.

I'm torn.

The previous one did, so it would follow form. This is the description of the contents of the last one as listed on this old online store

http://www.gamingdragon.com.au/p/951035/warhammer-40k-paint-set-.html

The Warhammer 40,000 Paint Set is an ideal first purchase. It includes a painting guide, a brush, a selection of Citadel paints and some easy to assemble miniatures for you to practice on. If you've never taken up a paintbrush or want to try a new technique, this set is a great way to get started.

The Warhammer 40,000 Paint Set contains a six-page painting guide, five plastic Space Marines with moulded Ultramarine and Tactical markings on their shoulder pads, a Starter Brush, a 12ml pot of Badab Black wash and the following 12ml pots of paint: Undercoat Black, Calthan Brown, Mordian Blue, Burnished Gold, Skull White, Chainmail and Blood Red.

The fantasy equivalent looks like it contains some of the High Elf starter set models from Island of Blood (or the extra direct only ones that came out later) and they have moulded shields etc.

Perhaps they are intended to be cross sold along with the box so use one of the factions from intro set.

Or of course it could be nothing of the kind and I just want a new DA codex :)

it seem to be following their new policy that they image on the box is exactly what you get. I don't know if any noticed that a lot of the new plastic kits show the mold joints which they could have easy hidden. They seem to have taken it one step further here mind since it appear they only used the brush you get in the set as well, the detailing seems quite naffly done. As a product i'm not that impressed they could have put in a least some sort of layer green in to stop it looking so flat and or a pure white for some edge highlighting.
DA look like they to become the new poster boys of 40k. It would tie in with the rumours that 6ed fluff is more chaos based. DA fluff would only need mild tweaking to make they a specialist ant fallen marine hunters.

Ughh.. not first again... The first books of a new edition ALWAYS get shafted, thats what happened to us last time! Here is hoping this round is better.

I was told by my store manager that the pads do have sculpted iconography.

I'm not convinced from that picture that the DA details are sculpted on.

Having zoomed in on the picture, I would have to disagree. They appear to have a slight shadow underneath the tactical arrow. Still I could be wrong and it wouldnt be the 1st time :D

The shoulders are sculpted DA symbols. A source of mine has a box. I don't know any rumors beyond that, my friend just gets stuff a few weeks early.

Lets just hope that the Dark angels dont lose their independent codex and become the vanilla poster child now.

Better to have Azrael, Sammael and Belial as the leading characters than Robot Girlymans favourite Avatar bumming champion, Calgar.

One more thing to add to the "rumor and observation pile" here:

Look at the new "How To Paint Citadel Miniatures" product page. (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=&prodId=prod1490018a)

Again, we have Dark Angels Space Marines on the cover. Now, this might be grasping at straws here, but this combined with the DA from the "intro" paint set does seem to lend more weight to the idea that Dark Angels are going to be the "poster" marines for the upcoming 6th Edition, at least in the Intro Boxed Set.

If DA are indeed in the boxed set, it makes sense to me (from a marketing perspective) to feature the DA paint scheme in related "introductory" type products like the starter paint set, and the "teach you how to paint" book.

Counter to this, is that the old edition of "how to paint miniatures" featured a Grey Knight prominently on the cover (in addition to Ultramarines), so take that for what it's worth.

There does seem to be a "cumulative case" building around Dark Angels, though.

Don't forget the WD spine images, which appear to be adding up to a Dark Angels image. DA are the 6th Edition Ultramarines, I think (and rightly so- they're the 40k-est of all chapters in my opinion).

I was chatting with the manager of my local GW and he said 'I think we all know what will be in 6th ed" when I asked if the new paint box meant there would be DA in the new box.

Them's be Salamanders, good sir. Note the brighter shade of green, the Tactical Squad arrow pointing up rather than side-to-side, and the black trim around the shoulder pad.

Hmmm, you could be right there. I'm no expert on DA paint colors, to be sure.

Yeah I think that is not DA. I have had them for over 18 years and that's a bit to light of green. I hope the rumors are true and the DA dex is next. I hope that they bring it up to par with the other dex's.:)

Also, look at the top of their DA shoulder pads, especially the one on the top right - it definitely looks like the top of the sword rises above the level of the pad.
