Playing against my buddy with his Blood Angels, he wants my Scarabs to make it all the way to the plastic base of the Sormtoaster (skimmer) to make it into "assault".

In turn, when he assaults my Necron Ghost Arks he only has to reach the model outline to claim assault on my skimmer.

Should they be the same?

Note: 2 Sormtoasters destroyed on turn 1 by Scarabs + Spyders....

I've got nothing to back this claim up currently, but:

- Units that have large oval flying base treat that base as a marker for close combat and disembarking / embarking. And the hull / weaponmounts used in the shooting.

- Units that are on the hovering bases are treated just like any other "land" vehicle (since at the most cases, you can't even get to the small hover base for the purposes of the close combat. This would as such lead to a point where all the non-flying-base skimmers would be immune to the close combat attacks

I am under the impression that you must contact the base to assault a large oval base skimmer because it's impossible for you to contact the hull.

Flyers are contacted st the base, normal skimmes are close enough to physically touch so you do it at the hull. If storm ravens were low enough to physically touch, you would do so--such as if the model were immobilized and forced off its base.

or you are elevated and can reach the storm raven.

Right. You go for the model's hull if at all possible, otherwise go for the base.

So, put the Ghost Ark on an elevated Skimmer (Stormtoaster) base? :)

In 5th edition you need your opponent's permission to put a model on a base other than the one it is supplied with.

Also, the disadvantages of being way up in the air like that more than outweigh the minor advantage of being slightly harder to assault.

The Stormraven has such an enormous footprint (both its base and the model itself) that complaining about it being hard to get to is rather laughable.

That was my impression to. We came along a similar issue with my DE army. Following the same guidance with Raiders and RWJs
