I've started a Death Guard force based on the Apostles of Contagion during the Siege of Vraks. This first post will serve as a holding place so I can update the content of each page. If you want to see more of my models you can visit my blog at Rust and the City (http://rustandthecity.blogspot.ca/).

Here is an AoBR dreadnought I have converted for the force. I tried lots of new things with the sculpting and conversions.

Awesome! The tubes and the battle damage are well done. How did you make the back pipes? It seems like maybe a thick plastic tube exposed to heat; but specifics would be appreciated.

Your link didn't work when I tried it; please let me know when you have that repaired.

thanks,

Marques

Nightspawn-Thanks. I'm working on painting as we speak.

Patternmaker-the back pipes are pieces of plasticard melted a little over a candle. I've started doing lots of the little pipes just with greenstuff now as I think they will blend in better with the finished models. I've fixed the link now. Thanks for pointing it out!

Here is a test model I painted a bit of yesterday. Just to test out painting armour like this. This used a lot of drybrushing. I'm not really satisfied with the look and have tried something different today.

Here are some more conversions and the first plague marine squad.

i am very jealous. I have always have a soft spot for nurgle and love the above conversions. Top notch.

Thanks everyone. I chose Nurgle so I could really go all out with the conversions.

deathshead-Don't worry, they are sanitary! I washed them before painting (to remove lubricant from the greenstuff!).

I've finished the armour on a few more models and thought I would share the new (final?) paint scheme. I am pretty happy with it. I just need to figure out how to paint a few more details.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_1058-1.jpg
Best part-this paint scheme is pretty fast to paint and I get to use my airbrush a lot!

They match pretty well with the only Apostles of Contagion picture I have been able to find.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_1065.jpg
The last thing that is really bugging me is how to paint the fungus/rot/guts. Any ideas? I tried a leviathan purple/baal red wash and it looks alright. Any thoughts on better methods? I don't want it to be too bright, as it would contrast too much with the muted armour. Ideas, suggestions, links to cool pictures, etc would be greatly appreciated!

Nice modeling work. I also really like the purple ink/wash since it really makes some of the growths look...juicy.

As a Death Guard player myself, may I say those models look awesome. Really great conversions and paint scheme.

Do you mind telling how you painted them?

I am slowly buying Forge World and other pieces to redo my DG for 6th edition and hopefully a new codex.

For Mortarion and Papa Nurgle!

Thanks everyone. I should have these finished later today.

albertsevil-the paint recipe is as follows. VMA-Vallejo Model Air, VGC-Vallejo Game Colour
-airbrush whole model VMA Olive Drab
-airbrush zenithal highlight VMA duck egg green
-airbrush VMA dark earth on base and feet
-paint scorched brown on weapons, chains, cables, rusty areas
-use a sponge and brush to stipple bestial brown, vomit brown, and macharius solar orange on rusty areas
-drybrush light coat of boltgun metal over rusty areas
-wash metal and armour and cloth with heavy coat of gryphonne sepia
-wash deep recesses lightly/glaze with devlan mud

-then details such as eyes, guts, and fungus are painted separately with different techniques

Thanks everyone.

MercyKiller-As they say in Thailand "never try, never know"

Calgar-They are only half finished! I painted the lenses today. I'll have pictures of the finished dread and plague marines on here tomorrow or Monday.

I've been busy working on some prisoners for the Prisoner Exchange at the Deathsquads forum. Basically, you make a prisoner for another person and post it to them. I built two for my recipient. The ork is finished and delivered and the demolition expert is almost finished.

I've also built a demolition expert. Just needs a few more details and then it is finished.

Looks great! Any tips on getting into infantry-sized sculpting? I've done my fair share of "nurglizing" on vehicles and the like, but I haven't gotten the balls yet to start sculpting small stuff.
Keep up the good work!

Brymm-My biggest tip is to just go for it! As they say in Thailand "Never try, never know." You can usually get the greenstuff off if it goes badly.

More seriously though, there are some things you can do to make life easier.

1. Start out by sculpting just one or two areas on a model. Like the bellies on my death guard or adding a hat or bandages and things like that. Once you have that down then move to more extensive areas.

2. Sculpt in layers. Build a shape and then add detail. For example, the head on this model was built in about 5 stages. Did the lenses, then the mask, then the hat shape, then the fur, then put it on the model, then added the hose, then added a ring around the hose. Patience is important. Let the layers set before you sculpt over them.

3. Use preexisting models. Sculpting from scratch is hard, so you can make life easier by building onto a preexisting model. I often take a model and cut and file lots of the detail off and then sculpt over it. This helps me to ensure I get the right proportions.

4. The right tools can help. Colour shapers and some nice fine metal tools can make things easier.

5. Using a lubricant like chapstick or vaseline makes it much easier to smooth areas.

If you are interested, I have lots of sculpting discussions and tips on my blog. Feel free to post up any specific questions here and I can try to help. The biggest thing is to just try different things. This model was a trickier sculpt that I had previously done.

Thanks! Those are great tips. I have some green stuff in my drawer but I haven't busted it out besides for my Nurgle stuff.
I'm working on my traitor guard and might have to try my Nurgle veteran squad with basic greenstuff "upgrades" like bellies, pox and the like. I supposed I could also try some beards and the like on my other squads. I'm excited.
I took a look at your blog, it looks awesome. Thanks again!

I realized that I haven't posted any of my imperial renegades on here. They are a skirmish squad I have slowly been working on.

This is the centrepiece, a Nurgle Renegade Sergeant.

He is converted from the plastic WoC Nurgle Lord. I sculpted one of his arms and his head plus some details on the rest of his body.

I finally painted some more death guard. I airbrushed this rhino and then added weathering powders.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_2023.jpg

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_2011.jpg
I airbrushed the nurgle sores as well. The purple colour will make more sense once I show some of the other models I am working on at the moment.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_2015.jpg
I tried using vallejo latex masking fluid on the model. I am not very happy with the round, blotchy areas of chipping it created. I sponged on some other damage and think it looks a lot better. I added the silver to the tracks and edges using a standard pencil.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x480/NarcissusCO/IMG_2011.jpg
Too much smoke. So ugly. I didn't put the doors on for some other unknown reason. I think I thought the sores looked cooler on the inside like this.

Narcissus
11-13-2012, 08:16 PM
For the second and third rhinos I added a slight airbrushed highlight (so slightly lighter than the first one). I also was more careful with the smoke and painted a few more details by hand (lenses, skulls). I didn't use any masking and did the battle damage with a sponge and a pencil.
