I am working on my cult army and was looking for information on how to best apply dirt and weathering to the tanks.

I don't have a particular technique. I just use a combination of dry brush and wash of various browns til I'm happy with it. I usually start dark, work lighter, then bring a dark to mid brown back as a final dry brush. It's a process where I rarely have a noticeable amount of paint on the brush. I'm just using lots of quick brushing with a relatively stiff brush to bring the minor amount of pigment I have from the brush to the tracks. For deep in mud and dirt, I'll use a wash combined with stippling.

There's some folks who actually apply dirt like it's flock, but I find that approach too clumpy for my tastes. I can find few photo references of vehicles going through mud that have the kind of clumping Forge World was advocating a while ago, so I don't like to do it.

everything you need to see is in this 10 min video, one of the best gems on the net for vehicle weathering!

I have to say that "pigments" turn out really cool. I have only used vallejo pigments but I am sure they all work the same. It gives it a dusty look and if you make it thicker you can get clumps of earth. You tube has some great tutorials.

The new texture paints will be great for doing this, once they are out (so if you don't mind waiting a few more days. Texture and colour all in one go!

I second the idea of waiting for the texture paints, they have a lot of potential!

I played with the desert texture (whatever that's called) at my local GW store last weekend, I though while it was fine for basing, it was a little coarse for vehicle weathering purposes.

You could use a combination of texture paints / fine sand lightly on the treads followed by a few watered down washes and topped off with a very light drybrush on the treads.

Secret Weapon's weathering pigments are very nice.

Are ground pastels the same as using pigments?

I haven't tried the pigments yet but I've seen plenty of photos to suggest they are great.

In the spaces where a bit more will stick I use a very light application of fine sand. Not an even coating just some scattered grains to suggest texture. Then I paint the area a muddy color, and drybrush the same color across the areas that would get dirty but wouldn't see much buildup. You can also add flock and/or static grass in small amounts and paint over it to represent large chunks of sod and turf. This can be a nice effect for dozer blades or steps where there is a surface to catch debris but not so good on the sides where such chunks are going to slide off quickly.
